1.1 Introduction
GREENER TECH CONSULTANCY
Providing Safety, Health & Environmental Management Solutions

At the request of Original Technology Private Limited, Greener Tech consultancy

carried out a factory wide illumination and occupational noise survey on the 6th of June
2018. We declare that the results and observations reflected in this report are a true
reflection of conditions encountered during the survey. The results and observations
while only applying to conditions that existed at the time of survey are representative of
noise and illumination levels at Original Technology factory.
Recommendations made in this report are made in good faith and every effort was made
to ensure professional integrity thereof. The final responsibility however still lies with
the client to determine the root cause(s) and come up with appropriate corrective action.

This report/document cannot be guaranteed to be the unaltered edition unless it bears the
signature of the contact / liaison person.

1.2 Background
The occupational hygiene surveys was done in line with the clients endeavor to meet the
requirements of its SHEQ system requirements as well as legislative requirements.

The major objectives were to

 To determine the noise and illumination levels

 To check whether requirements set by legal authorities are met
 To determine mitigatory measures

1.3 Foreword
GREENER TECH CONSULTANCY
Providing Safety, Health & Environmental Management Solutions

 Prolonged exposure to noise may lead to occupational noise induced hearing

loss, susceptibility to High blood pressure, poor communication and thus leading
to occupational accidents.

 Low levels of illumination leads to reduced precision, causes eye strain and
fatigue. This might also lead to accidents. It is therefore imperative that
illumination level must be within thresholds to increase visibility, visual acuity
and thus improve worker morale.

 Legal and other Requirements:

- In the manufacturing industry noise is legislated under the factories and Work
Act as well as the NSSA Act.
- Illumination is governed by the factories and works Act.

2. NOISE
Generally problems caused by exposure to high levels of noise include stress related
illness, hearing loss, loss of productivity, speech interruption, irritability and nervousness
headaches and decrease in work efficiency. The immediate and acute effect of noise is
impairment of hearing.

Hearing loss is preventable, progressive and permanent. It is against this background that
organizations have to implement robust hearing conservation programmes.
The noise measurements were conducted using a sound level meter. The instrument
measures A weighted sound pressure level which gives real time measurements.

2.1 Choice of sampling sites and locations.

The sampling locations were chosen based on baseline risk assessment.

In order to make the results representative samples from all types of machines, work
stations, activities were considered.

2.3 Measurement procedure

a. Set to maximum scale and check batteries

b. Set to “A” scale
c. Turn to slow response
d. Fit the calibrator and calibrate instrument (106 dB)

e. Switch on the instrument first.

f. Once the control module is switched on the main menu is displayed.
g. Leave the instrument to do self-calibration which takes one minute.

2.5 Recommendations
In line with international best practice requirements control measures should follow the
hierarchy of control. More conveniently starting with elimination substitution,
engineering, administrative and resorting to use of PPE as the last line of defence

Furthermore methods of reducing or combating noise are as follows:

 Attenuation which is silencing of the noise at source
 Using personnel protective devices and equipment to reduce noise intensity
 Limiting the exposure time of any personnel within a noise prone environmen

3. LIGHT
Generally problems caused by poor illumination are lowering of morale leading to
incidents, eye strain leading to errors, minor eye illnesses.
It is against this background that organizations have to implement sound illumination
programmes. The light intensity measurements were conducted using a lux meter. The
instrument measures light intensity (illumination levels) in lux.

3.1Choice of sampling sites and locations.

The sampling locations were chosen based on baseline risk assessment.

In order to make the results representative samples from all sources of light, work
stations and activities were considered.

 Next Date of Calibration 07-02-18

3.3 Measurement procedure

a. Check the light meter – set instrument to 300 scale

b. Set to “A” scale to 300, close photo-voltaic cell and check x-ray
c. List the following data
- light intensities at various positions
- type of work being performed
- type of lighting being installed
- conditions of lighting
- description and sketch of area surveyed
- number and type of light –meter used
d. Use the instrument

4.Conclusion
From the survey, 59% of the working stations have noise levels above the normal
threshold. Hence as a recommendation it is advisable that all persons working in the
workshop are provided with noise PPE having an attenuation factor of 20%. It also
necessary to post signage indicating noise levels raising awareness. The fact that more
than 50% of the workers are exposed to above threshold necessitates the establishment of
sound noise conservation as enshrined in the Code of practice on noise induced hearing
loss. 80% of the light intensity below the threshold values can be detected when the
lights are off. However in case of power outages illumination levels are found to exceed
threshold hence if any working are to be conducted during such times there will be need
to have alternative sources of light.
