Epic EHR

Epic Systems is one of the largest providers of health information technology, used

primarily by large U.S. hospitals and health systems to access, organize, store and share

electronic medical records. Some of the key products and services include: Telehealth,

EpicCare, MyChart, Healthy planet and many others. One of the options that this software has

provided in these times of pandemic is Telehealth. Telehealth is a virtual option to be able to

have your follow up appointment or to keep in touch with your primary care physician or any

other medical provider or specialist. According to an article called10 things to know about Epic,

“approximately 190 million patients across the globe currently have a record in Epic’s EHR

system. Epic’s software is used in a variety of clinical settings, including community hospitals,

retail clinics, rehabilitation centers, academic medical centers and independent practices.” This

software is very useful and very easy to understand in comparison to other software.

Interviewing several nurses at Community memorial Hospital I was able to conclude that

they prefer the system Epic than the current system Meditech that they are using. The reason

being that Epic is easier to navigate and to accomplish everything with less time sitting in a

computer charting and having more patient interaction to get them to a healthier state faster.

Emily Delaine, RN came from Minnesota to work here in Ventura and she stated that the

previous hospital that she worked at used Epic as the system to access patient records and to

record anything from patient assessments, to medical history and anything related to the patients

important personal information. Irene Castro RN,BSN has been a nurse for the past 15 years and

in her experience in different hospitals that she worked at said that Epic was the easiest to
navigate because when it came to charting the progress of the patient, the system was self-

explanatory on what to click in comparison to Meditech that in order to chart something they had

to click something then go into a sub tab and add more sub tabs, that made it hard for the nurses

to complete their work in a timely manner. Personally, I have at app called MyChart for UCLA

health that I use to access my information and it is powered by epic and I do believe that Epic

company is the future of electronic health records company.

I as a nursing assistant working in a hospital, I would like a system that is easy to use,

reliable and accessible to anybody and I feel that Epic gives all of that to the patient’s side and to

the medical practices that implement this system. Based on Everything that I have researched

and heard from a couple of my fellow coworkers, I would recommend this system for all hospital

and clinics to implement because it would save time on the computer and instead get to know the

patient better to provide a more efficient care.
