3. WORKING PRINCIPLE

Closing action begins when hydraulic fluid is pumped into the closing

chamber of the BOP below the piston. As the piston rise, it pushes the

element up, and the element’s spherical shape causes it to close in at the

piston rise, it pushes the element up, and the element’s spherical shape

5
13 5/8”-5000psi Annular BOP

causes it to close it to close in at the top as it moves upward. As the piston

continues to rise, the element seals around the drill string or shuts off the well

bore. Steel segments in the element move into the well bore to support the

rubber as it contains the well pressure below. Opening action begins when

hydraulic fluid is pumped into the opening chamber of the BOP above the

piston. As the piston comes down, the element returns to its original position

by its elasticity.

4. STRUCTURE FEATURE

4.1. Simple and dependable

13 5/8”-5000psi annular BOP consists of just five major parts—the case

(lower housing), upper housing, piston, adapter ring and the sealing element.
This simple design provides a rugged, reliable preventer and easy of service
in the field.

4.2. Wear ring structure

There are wear rings at the dynamic seal surface between the piston and
the lower housing & the lower housing and support ring. Wear rings eliminate
metal-to-metal contact between the piston and the lower housing.

4.3. Lip type seal ring structure

All dynamic seals are lip type, especially made to seal against moving
parts with minimum wear and no leakage.

Figure 1 Lip type seal ring structure

6
13 5/8”-5000psi Annular BOP

4.4. Yx-ring structure

The dynamic seal for sealing water pressure adopts Yx-ring. The seal is reliable
without leakage.

Figure 2 Yx-ring structure

4.5. Piston

The section of the piston is “Z”form with the features of short stroke, small
height and large size in radial direction.

4.6. Suitable for H2S service

Preventers suitable for H2S service can be provided according to NACE

MR-01-75 regulation requirements.

4.7. Spherical rubbers

4.7.1 This kind of rubber is just like a half ball. It is made of radial
supporting ribs (steel segment) and rubber. The rib is made of alloy-steel.
When the rubber is opened, the ribs will be away from the hole to return to
original position. Even if the rubber worn seriously, it will not block the hole.
4.7.2 Turn over of the rubber is limited. When a hole is closed, the
pressure of the hole forces the rubber turn over, but the steel segment can
resist the turn over, causing the rubber being at safe status. So it can stand
high pressure without damage.
4.7.3 Funnel effect. During tripping out, well pressure and pipe movement
are in the same direction. Rubber compresses firmly against the steel
segment at the top of the element, but rubber at the bottom is slightly
compressed. This creates a” funnel effect” that makes it easy for a tool joint to
enter the sealing element. When tripping in, well pressure and pipe movement
oppose each other. Well pressure compresses the rubber portion of the
element against the steel segments as the tool joint moves down into the

7
13 5/8”-5000psi Annular BOP

element. This prolongs the life of the rubber.

4.7.4 Well pressure assists the closing of the sealing element. This makes

the element’s sealing more tight and reliable.

4.7.5 The steel segments molded into the rubber make metal-to-metal

sliding contact with the sphere of the housing. This provides lower coefficient

of friction than rubber-to-metal contact would. So the closing pressure is

reduced.

4.7.6 When there is drilling tools in the well, take out of the old sealing

element from the BOP by cutting it. Cut the new sealing element between two

steel cores. Pull the sealing element out and cover on the tools in the hole,

and then change it.

Figure 3 Cutting packing element

▲! Attention: When there is need to change the packing element, the drilling tools

are in the well. First, it must be sure that the drilling tools has been reliable seal by

ram BOP or there is no pressure in the well or there is no pressure trend, and then

change the packing element by cutting it.

6. Operation and maintenance

Before installation of BOP, you must read the manual before this section. The former
sections introduce structure, function and operation method of each part & attentions in
details. Then, install and use the BOP according to the following procedure.

6.1. Installation on the wellhead

6.1.1 Following systems are required at well site to use the annular BOP.

1. Hydraulic control system.

2. A control line to the opening (upper) port and a control line to the

closing (lower) port.

3. For stripping, an accumulator bottle is required. This bottle should be

pre-charged with nitrogen to a special pressure.

4. A hydraulic regulator to allow adjustment of operating pressure to meet

any given situation.

6.1.2 Inspection must be done before installation of annular BOP

1. Inspect if the gasket grooves of well head flange and BOP flange is

good. Inspect the surface of the flange. There should be no protruding

point.

11
13 5/8”-5000psi Annular BOP

2. If the pressure testing is qualified.

6.1.3 Installation of annular BOP

1. The connecting bolts of each flange should be diagonal tightened

uniformly.

2. The tighten toque of flange bolts see “Attachment list 1”.

6.1.4 After annular BOP installed on well head, inspect the following

before operation, to ensure its proper operation.

1. Inspect oil pipes to see if they are in compliance with BOP switch

direction; provide 10.5MPa control pressure to test each ram twice (open and

close), draining air from the pipes. If annular BOP switch movement is not the

same direction as the mark on the hand rod of control platform, reverse the

connection pipes.

2. Wellhead equipments shall be pressure tested fully. Standards of test

shall be according to related well control specifications. After tests, every

connection bolt is fixed once again avoiding unbalanced distribution. See the

tightening torque of flange bolt from attachment list 1.

6.2. Operation

BOP operation must be charged by specialist and professional person.

Operators shall be familiar with BOP working principle, specifications and

process, and can also operate, repair, maintain and clear troubles.

After reaching objective interval, the annular BOP should be opened and

closed one time every day to see if they are flexible lock in normal condition.

6.2.1 Stripping operation

Stripping operations are undoubtedly the most severe application for any

preventer because of the wear of the sealing element or exposed to as the

12
13 5/8”-5000psi Annular BOP

drill string is moved through the preventer under pressure. To prolong sealing

element life, it is important to use proper operating procedures when stripping.

The recommended procedures are:

(1) Close the preventer with 10.5~14MPa closing pressure.

(2) Just prior to commencing stripping operations reduce closing

pressure to a value sufficient to allow to a slight leak. The slight leak

can provide lubrication and prevent excessive temperature build up in

the element. As the element wears, pressure will need to be

incrementally increased to prevent excessive leakage. Note: string

with 18°tool joints should be used, and the tripping rate could not

exceed 0.2m/s.

(3) If conditions will not allow leakage during stripping operations, the

closing pressure should be adjusted to a value just sufficient to

maintain a seal.

(4) As required closing pressures approach 1,500psi, excessive leakage

still exists, it is said that the rubber has been worn seriously. It must

be treated to complete stripping operations.

6.3. Attention

1. After installation at well site, the BOP should be pressure tested

according to rated standards.

2. After reaching the target zone, the BOP should be checked by

closing and opening it every two stripping. If there is any problem, it

must be treated.
3. When a blowout happens with drill string in the well, the annular
BOP can be used to control the well pressure, but it can’t be used
for a long time. First it can reduce the service life of the rubber,

13
13 5/8”-5000psi Annular BOP

second this kind of BOP has no locking system. Normally, don’t use
the BOP to shut off a well without any thing in it.

▲! Attention: The max well pressure should be half of the rated

working pressure.

4. When the BOP is in close position, it is allowed to move the drill tool

up and down, but not turn it.

5. Do not release well pressure by opening annular BOP to avoid

rubber damage.

6. Every time the BOP is opened, it must be checked if the BOP is

opened completely to avoid rubber damage.

7. Hydraulic oil must be used to open and close the BOP and keep

clean.
8. After usage or test or before maintenance, the water and dirty in the
body of BOP should be clean out.

7. Maintenance

BOP shall be cleared completely after every testing at site. Replace

damaged parts in time, anoint so as to prevent rust after cleaned each seal

surface, (suggest to oil them by synthetic complex aluminium grease), and oil

connecting thread part by thread grease. The oil should not melt under 50℃.

7.1. Disassembly procedure

Packing element & each seal parts and seal surface are the key parts in a
BOP. If damaged, BOP is useless in sealing well. So it is very important to
keep it well, and replace it in time if there is damage in sealing parts or
surface.
Replacement procedures are as following:

14
13 5/8”-5000psi Annular BOP

7.1.1. Change of sealing element

(1) Remove the stud nuts that retain the upper housing. (Item 3)

(2) Lift the upper housing.

(3) Screw the eyebolts into the sealing element and lift it out. If there is

drill tool in it, the new element should be first cut open with rubber

cutter. The cut surface should be smooth. The old sealing element

should be cut open too, and lift it out and exchange it with the new one.

(See figure 3)
7.1.2. Disassembly of adapter ring and piston
(1) Remove the pipe plugs from the inlet and outlet of hydraulic oil.

Remove the upper housing and sealing element. Then screw the

eyebolts into the adapter ring and lift it out.

(2) Screw the eyebolts into the piston and lift it out.

7.1.3 Disassembly of dust-proof ring

Remove the packing element. Then screw the eyebolts into the dust-proof

ring and lift it out.

7.1.4 Disassembly of piston

Remove the dust-proof ring. Then screw the eyebolts into the piston and
lift it out.

7.2. Reassembly procedure

1.Check the adapter ring, piston and wear ring on the body (lower

housing)(item 10,12,14). If there is damage or serious wear, they should be

repaired.

2.Check the seal rings of the adapter ring, piston and casing. If there are

any damages or maturing, they should be changed.

15
13 5/8”-5000psi Annular BOP

3.Oil the inner surface of the casing, piston and adapter ring.

4.Install the piston in the lower housing.

5.Install the adapter ring in the lower housing.

6.Grease the inner surface of the upper housing and the supporting

surface of the piston. Coat the connection bolts with thread oil.

7.Install the sealing element on top of the piston.

8.Install the upper housing.

9.Screw the stud nuts that retain the upper housing.

10.Screw in the pipe plugs of the inlet and outlet.

8. PROPER STOPAGE OF RUBBER PARTS

All rubber parts must be stored as following:

1. Keep storage area as cool as possible with temperature of 0~25℃.

Never store rubber parts near heaters or sunshine.

2. Prevent rubbers from corrosion.

3. Store these items away from high-voltage equipments. High-voltage

equipment frequently produces ozone that attacks rubber.

4. Store rubber parts in a relaxed position. For example, do not bend a

rubber part and force it into a small box. This accelerates aging in the

stressed (bent) area.

5. Keep the storage area as dry as possible and wipe off any oil, grease

or liquids that accidentally spill on the rubber.

6. Normal storage period is 2 years.

16
13 5/8”-5000psi Annular BOP

9. TROUBLES AND SETTLEMETS

9.1. The rubber can not seal on the drill string.

(1) If the seal element can not be closed to position, it can be opened

and closed several times. But if it still can’t be closed to position,

the rubber should be changed.

(2) If the rubber is over worn or damaged, it should be changed in

time.

(3) If a BOP has opened for a long time, some foreign matter may be

settled on the rubber. In this situation, the rubber should be

cleaned and moved.

9.2. The BOP can not open after closed.

This is because the BOP has closed for a long time, the rubber has

deformed permanently, or there would be some cement under the rubber. In

this situation, the rubber must be cleaned or changed.

9.3. The BOP can not be opened and closed flexibly.

(1) All the pipes should be blown with pressure air before connected.

All connectors should be cleaned.

(2) There is leakage in the oil pipes. The BOP has not operated for a

long time, or it is plugged by some foreign matter. So the BOP

must be operated according to the operation procedure.
