● Need a meeting next week but will have students missing due to the SNHS

mentoring session during phoenix time

○ Depends on the number of students participating in mentoring session
○ Presentation slides to let the students know how the competition works
● Need to let students know the team system in email
● Include pairs in the form 2 people per pair and match the pairs randomly
○ Everyone needs a pair, so this will make even numbers
○ But there may be an odd number of pairs which won’t make a 4 people
team
● Let the students know about the prize
● Hang posters around school? We only have a week til finals and proposal takes a
long time

Competition starts right after winter break (Jan. 11)
Format You can attach the format of the event or add it here.

● First preliminary round

○ 3 teams will be placed into 1 group (there will be 3 groups or 4 depending on
the number of participants)
○ This will require 6 white boards and board markers (3 in dalton hall and 3 in
small theater) → 2 days of the first round
○ Materials: 6 white boards and board markers (3 in dalton hall and 3 in small
theater), 6 tables (3 in dalton hall and 3 in small theater), 2 projectors (1 in 3rd
floor library and 1 in small theater)
○ Each team will have time to solve the question presented on the powerpoint,
and when time is up for the question, answers will be checked, and those who
got the question correct will receive a point
○ The final scores of the teams will be compared, and the team with the lowest
score will be eliminated
○ This round will consist of the subjects: Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and
general science
■ 28 questions for each set
● Semi-finals round
○ 3 teams will be placed into 1 group (or 1 group will have 4 teams)
○ Each team will engage in a jeopardy round. This will require 7 buzzers.
■ The team who buzzes first and gets the answer correct will receive a
point
■ If the first team who buzzes does not get the answer, the other teams
can buzz to get the chance to answer
■ If none of the teams are able to answer the question in 30 seconds, the
question will be skipped, and none of the teams will receive a point.
○ The team with the greatest point in each round will be selected to move on to
the final round
○ The team with the second highest points will move onto the third place round
○ This round will consist of the subjects: Psychology, Chemistry, Biology,
Physics, computer science
● Third place round
○ 2 teams will be participating (the second place in each semi-finals round)
○ Each team will engage in a jeopardy round. This will require 2 buzzers
○ The team with the highest points will be placed 3rd place.
○ This round will consist of the subjects: Psychology, Chemistry, Biology,
Physics, general science
● Final round
○ The two teams will be given time to prepare for the final round
○ This round will consist of a presentation or a debate round for science topics
they have chosen. Three topics will be given, and the two teams can veto one
topic so that they will choose the one that is not vetoed.
■ Potential topics (subject to change):
● Human genome sequencing does more harm than good
● Human cloning should be permitted in the United States.
● Human genome sequencing does more harm than good.
● Hydrofracking does more harm than good.
● Immunizations should not be mandated.
○ The round will be judged by Mr. Martin and the hosts (JP and Hyeon)
■ 1st and 2nd place will be selected according to the judgements

From previous proposal:

Growth Mindset: What aspect(s) of this project will be true a “learning stretch” for you?
This project demands us to have a huge responsibility in managing time,
persevering and communicating with many people, which is taking us out of our
comfort zone. To prepare to host for this big event, we must talk to many teachers in
order to get assistance throughout our project and communicate with other students
who will help us get the materials we need so that we can hold this competition
successfully.

Making Teams:
In order to form a more equal distribution among the teams in terms of
knowledge they each have yet providing a more comfortable atmosphere, Each team
will be made by first accepting (at max 12) pair request among the upper grade
students(juniors & seniors) and evaluating them to minimising high level of deviation
in science knowledge among the teams made. Secondly from the requested pairs
teams, individual random spinners for the upper grades and the lower grades
(Freshmen and sophomore) will be made and spun to form 12 teams, each made up of
3 upper grades and 1 lower grade .

Separation in Roles
In order to form equality in the level of work and check out on each other’s
mistake, Hyeon and JP will be trying to even out the amount of work to the best level
possible.

And as for the question making, we each took our speciality in the fields of
science to separate the roles by
● Hyeon taking care of the chemistry and biology for the preliminary rounds and
psychology for the semi-final round and the third place rounds
● Jongpyo Hong taking care of Physics and Chemistry for the preliminary rounds
and the semi-final round and the third place rounds.

And as for the final round of debate/presentation, we have put down some lists
of topics together for the participants to choose and then prepare the rubrics for the
presentation(Hyeon) and debate(JP) separately.

Jeopardy Round Rules

● There will be penalties for each question you get wrong
○ ie) If you get 500 one wrong, then you will lose 250 points
○ ie) if you get 300 one wrong, then you will lose 150 points
