Film Review
The film “Friend Zone” which is a Thai Film filmed in a year of 2019, is a romantic
comedy starts out having one of the characters being “Friend Zoned” by the other. However,
doesn’t every romance start out being one sided love? But in this film, it showed how both of the
characters are falling in love with each other which resulted in the realization that it is no longer
one-sided love at all. It is directed by Chayanop Boonprakob, and with the help of the
scriptwriters who is Pattaranad Bhiboonsawade, Chayanop Boonprakob, and Thodsapon
Thiptinnakorn. Also, the main actors/characters of the movie Pimchanok Leuwisetpaiboon as
“Gink”, Naphat Siangsomboon as “Palm” and Jason Young as “Ted”. This movie is all about
two characters which is a long-time best friend and the boy best friend which is Palm is in loved
with her girl best friend which is Gink. Ever since Palm has never stopped caring about Gink,
even though he was once turned down by her. Even after he enters the workforce and starts
dating other girls, he always shows up when Gink needs him, he tries to forget her and moved on
but he can’t do it because he is really in loved with her best friend. And the time comes by Gink
found a boyfriend named “Ted” and based in the story Gink is obsessed with this guy but Palm
won’t give up in his feelings for her best friend. And when Ted have gone for his work with the
different countries, Gink had a gut feeling that Ted has another girl, that’s why Gink and Palm
decided to follow wherever Ted go and see if their gut feeling was right. But they don’t know
there are realizations that Gink will encounter and she will question herself if Palm is only a
friend or if she is falling in love with his best friend.
Genre
When it comes in “Genre” it is classified as Romantic Comedy. When you say romantic
comedy, it is a subgenre of comedy and slice of life fiction focusing on lighthearted, humorous
plot lines centered on romantic ideas, such as how true love is able to overcome most of the
obstacle. It is so applicable to the script because it added some factors that the movie will have a
positive outcome and also in the characters.
Synopsis
This movie captured the feeling of what it’s like to be put in the friend zone for an
indefinite period of time. There’s a lot of talk about going to see this movie with your friend
zone crush and having some miracle happen. I suppose it’s possible but let me just say that all
those people in the friend zone, you’re only there because you let yourself be there and this
movie alone isn’t going to magically change anything unless you yourself take action.
As with many other romantic comedies, Thai movie Friend Zone starts with a besotted
male protagonist Palm being friends with the object of his affections, Gink. Although it is
painfully obvious that Palm loves her, both Palm and Gink somehow manage to wave off all his
actions as gestures of friendship. It’s up to Palm to somehow step out of his self-inflicted Friend
Zone and find a way to demonstrate his love for Gink or remain in a state of limbo forever.
Characterization
First the character of “Gink” that played by Pimchanok Leuwisetpaiboon, the character of
Gink is a girl that gets into some ridiculous situation and get saved by his best friend. This
character is as same as other girls in real life, even how many times you may confess your
feelings with her if she is having no feelings for you she will only deny it but in this movie the
character of gink will have a realization if her feelings will stay in friends or maybe gink will
have also some feelings for Palm.
Next is the character of “Palm” that is played by Naphat Siangsomboon, his character is
in loved with Gink which is his best friend. But before that, Gink rejects Palm every time he tries
to express his for Gink. There are so many confessions that he made but Gink always deny it and
tells him that they are only friends. Palm tried to move on but he always ended up in the situation
where Gink needs his help.
Sound
When it comes in sound/ music it is important because the music will help the scene to
stay at the flow. It was like giving some life in every scene of the film. In this movie the
music/sound that they used is applicable in every situation that is happening in the scene.
Speech
In this film the actors used the different tone of speech to see the emotions that the actors
portray. It is important because in the tone depends the delivery of their lines in the scene.
Cinematography
When it comes in cinematography there are so many creative ways to perform the angle
of camera in the actors. Same as in some movies the cinematography that they use is so clean it
is so obvious that their cameraman and the director is working well together to produce a high-
quality film. In order to perform a clean and creative footage that they take in the scene the
director and the cameraman should have some effective skills to produce a high-quality output.
Production design
In this film the production design team is assign in the costumes of the actors, it is
important because like the music/sound it is one of the factors to have a right flow of scene. In
the film “Friend Zone” they used different costumes because there are so many settings in this
movie as long as they moved to another setting the costume will also change in order to fit the
character’s outfit in the setting in the scene.
