Activity Title : Angle of Elevation
Learning Target : Solves problems involving angle of elevation.
Reference(s) : MATH 9 DepEd Learner’s Material First Edition, 2014, ISBN: 978-971-9601-71-5

To recall, solving a triangle means finding the lengths of the sides and measures of the angles of the triangle.
Trigonometric ratios may be used to solve problems involving angles of elevation.
Example:
1. The building casts a 67-meter shadow. If the angle of elevation from the tip of the shadow to the top of the
building is 70º, how tall is the building? Round to the nearest meter.

y=67 tan 70 °
y ≈ 184 m
2. An observation balloon is attached to the ground at point A. On a level with A and in the same straight line,
the points B and C were chosen so that BC equals 100 meters. From the points B and C, the angle of
elevation of the balloon is 40º and 30º respectively. Find the height of the balloon.
x x
Equation 1: tan 40 °= Equation 2: tan30 °=
y y +100
tan 40 ° y
Solution: tan30 °=
y +100
x .8391 y
tan 40 °= 0 .5774=
y y+ 100
tan 40 ° y= x 0 .5774 ( y +100 )=0.8391 y
0 .5774 y +57.74=0.8391 y
substitute x=tan 40 ° y 57.74=0.2617 y
to Equation 2. y=220.6 m
Now, solve for x where y=220.6 m,
x=tan 40 ° y Since tan 40 °=0.8391
x=0 .8391 y (Use a calculator)
x=0 .8391(220.6 m)
x=185.1 m
Therefore, the height of the balloon is 185. 1 meters.
Exercises:
1. You sight a rock climber on a cliff at 32 ° angle of elevation. Your eye level is 6 ft above the ground and you
are 1000 ft. from the base of the cliff. What is the approximate height of the rock climber from the ground?
2. A woman is standing 12 ft. from a sculpture. The angle of elevation from her eye to the top of the sculpture
is 30°, and the angle of depression to its base is 22°. How tall is the sculpture to the nearest foot?
3. How far from the door must a ramp begin in order to rise 3ft. with an 8º angle of elevation?

4. From a point 80 meters from the base of a building to the top of the building, the angle of elevation is 51°.
From the same point to the top of a flag staff on the building, the angle of elevation is 54°.
