The debate on if athletes make too much money has raged throughout America and the
world since professional sports became popular. You can find mixed opinions on the topic
everywhere you go. I do have a strong opinion on this topic, which is why I chose it for my
Portfolio Project. The fact of the matter is, professional athletes do not make too much money.
These people devote most of their time to strengthening their bodies and minds in order to work
as hard as they can when they play for their sports organization. All professional athletes are
extremely gifted and make up a tiny fraction of billions of the people in this world that can do
All professional athletes put in hours of work every day to ensure that they are in shape
and physically dominant at all times. They risk so much to try and build their bodies to
perfection. These athletes put themselves in danger every single day with the rigorous workout
routines they do. They know there have been players who have gotten multiple concussions,
which lead to mental issues like depression and dementia. Most teens spend their free time
playing video games, calling or hanging out with friends, and other things. All of their free time
that they usually spend playing games or chatting with friends is spent training and exercising.
These players have to sacrifice time with their families in order to keep up with the
demand of their career. Especially in leagues like the NHL and NBA, players have to leave their
homes multiple times every month for away games. Many players have expressed how hard it is

to leave their families constantly. Sometimes players are traded to different teams, and they have
to go through the hassle of purchasing a new home and moving their families out of state.
Players can also get moved down to minor league teams in different cities. They often have
difficult relationships with their children as they grow up because they will often only have one
The sports industry is humongous and has the money to supply all of these players with
the riches they get. The Super Bowl, one of the largest events to be aired on television every
year, makes over 450 million dollars from advertisements alone (www.cnbc.com). Not to
mention, the massive ticket prices and merchandise purchases make just as much or maybe even
more. Again, since the demand for professional sports from consumers is so high, a large
percentage of them pay very high prices to watch the games and purchase merchandise. Since
leagues like the NFL are so popular, everybody around the nation knows what it is, and most of
them have a favorite team that they become very devoted to. There are also fan bases for every
team that support them no matter what, and they purchase the merchandise and tickets.
These insanely talented people provide entertainment for citizens across America and
other countries. People often bond or become friends by supporting the same sports teams or
players. I know when I go to Golden Knights games, I constantly see strangers giving each other
high fives after goals. There is also a ton of drama that happens during the offseason of each
sport that keeps fans entertained while their teams aren’t playing. When fans see that their
favorite team has signed an amazing player in free agency, they are ecstatic. Pieces of
memorabilia and merchandise that are signed by players are often some of the most prized
Professional athletes inspire people every day, especially young children around the
world. I remember when I was little, I was constantly inspired to do better in baseball when
watching my favorite team, the Boston Red Sox. I remember seeing them win the 2015 World
Series on TV. All of these players are role models to all of the kids that play the same sport as
them. I constantly learn from amazing players in the NHL and about what they do. There have
been some amazing stories where a child with a physical or mental disability has met their
professional sports hero. This makes them feel loved, and helps them in their lives a ton.
In conclusion, athletes do not make too much money, as the benefits to society and the
economy they have made outweigh the cons. They do amazing things for their teams, and the
community. Many of them use the money they earn to organize charity events and other things to
help others. They do so much for their careers, and the devotion they have is unbelievable. The
professional athletes of our nation have trained their bodies and much more for years to achieve
their dreams. The amount of money they make should not be a debate, as the reasons against it
pile up.
