Problem Solving Seam226
Problem Solving Seam226
Solve the following 2 problem as per required each problem and show your complete
solution if your solution is not clear I will mark it wrong. Use the word documents
provided for answering the question
1.A box- shape vessel 180 m long beam 30 m floating in fresh water at a draft of
7.00 m forward and aft. She has an amidships compartment which is empty 70
meters in length is bilged. In the present condition the KG is 13.5 meters.
Calculate the following by using the added weight method.
SOLUTION ( A)
A.)The draft in bilge condition
Calculate the mass of flood water admitted into the compartment.
Let x equal the new draft after bilging .
Added mass of water = 70x 30x 1.025 = 2152.5 or 2153x (1)
Calculate the initial displacement.
Initial displacement = 180 x 30 x 7 x 1.025 = 38745x (2)
Calculate the new displacement.
New displacement = 180 x 30 x X x 1.025 =5535x (3)
Calculate final draft(x)
New displacement (3) = Initial displacement (2)+mass of flood water(1)
5535x =38745+2153x
5535x-2153x = 38745
3382x =38745
X= draught in the bilged condition=11.456 m
S0LUTION (B)
B.) Calculate the initial GM, First calculate KM.
KM=KB+BM
KB=Draft =7.000 =3.500m
2 2
BM= LB = 180x303
3
=10.714 m
12V 12 x(180x30x7)
SOLUTION (C)
KM=KB+BM
KB= Draft =11.450m =5.725m
2 2
BM= LB = (180-70) x303 =6.548m
3
12V 12 x(180x30x7)
Therefore: KM= 5.725+6.548=12.273 m
Calculate GM for the bilged condition:
GM=KM-KG GM=12.273-13.500= 1.227m Ans
SOLUTION (D)
SOLUTION (A)
SOLUTION (B)
Calculate KM for the intact condition
Intact KM
KM=KB+BM
KB=3.331m
(Note that the final volume of displacement is the same as the initial volume of
displacement, so just use the original value)
BM= LB3
12V
However since water plane are has remained fully intact and the volume of
displacement does not change.
Initial BM=Final BM=11.870 m
Therefore: Final KM =3.331+11.870=15.201 m
Change in GM = Change in KM
Initial KM 14.620
Final KM 15.201
Change in GM 0.581
In this instance the initial stability of the vessel has increased as a result of bilging the
compartment. This is due to the addition of bottom weight with no introduced free
surface moments (If the added weight method were to be considered).
