constant flow and other steady-state conditions to
progressively load the filter until a specified pressure
drop is reached. During the test, particles entering
and exiting the filter are electronically counted. A
ratio of the particle concentration upstream to the

measure of the efficiency of the filter at capturing
particles of a certain size. Standards related to the

below −20 °C (−4 °F).
Note: Multigrade oils must meet the requirements
of Caterpillar TO-4M for use in transmissions.
Multigrade oils that use high molecular weight
polymers as viscosity index improvers may lose the
viscosity effectiveness because of temporary shear
and permanent shear of the polymer viscosity index
improver. These types of multigrade oils are not
recommended for Caterpillar transmissions. The
Caterpillar TO-4M oil requirement includes a test
for the shear stability of multigrade oil. If Caterpillar
Transmission/Drive Train Oil (TDTO) is not available,
use commercial oils that comply with Caterpillar TO-4
or TO-4M oil specifications.

Taking particle counts before and after product Consult your Caterpillar dealer for complete
maintenance allows the customer to determine if the information and assistance in establishing an SOS
filtration on the machine is controlling debris. Also, or program for your equipment.
if additional off-board filtration is needed. Trending of
the particle count data can also provide a basis to
help identify a potential failure while the machine is
in the shop. If the growth in particle count remains
low and stable, wear is usually normal. If there is a
sudden growth in particle count, rapid wear may be
occurring. An SOS oil sample is then taken to confirm
the particle count and diagnose the problem before a
failure and help determine the cause. The following
list describes contaminants and the source:
