PRE-LESSON ASSESSMENT ACTIVITY

How did the Spaniards and American colonizers describe and view native Filipinos? How will you
assess these images and representations of native Filipinos and their way of life?

According to my research, in the year 1604, over four centuries ago, a Jesuit friar Father
Pedro Chirino published a book in Spain about his experiences in the Philippines. The book deals
among other topics, the customs and lifestyles of the Filipinos as he found them throughout his stay
in the islands during prior years. In this way, we have a good testimony of what caught the attention
of the Europeans arriving there in the sixteenth century. By picking up some of these experiences, we
can summarize some of those that most caught his attention:
 Although they did not know the money, which they lacked, the loan or usury abounded,
more frequently than mere humanitarian aid among the natives. Thus, before lending rice,
gold grain or any other product, it was negotiated how much more would have to be
returned, being this margin or interest too high in the opinion of the author.
 They got drunk frequently, on the occasion of death, diseases, weddings, sacrifices to
their gods Anitos or Diutas, etc. On these occasions, anyone could go to the house
celebrating it that had its doors open to all, and take part in these parties.
 The author was surprised that almost any man, and especially any woman, could read
and write in their language and alphabet. In relation to the language of the Tagalogs he
found that they only have three vowels that are represented by a point near the consonant,
indicating by its situation, above or below, or absence, which of the vowels represents and
12 consonants, thus facilitating its learning.
 They greet each other by taking off their potong or cloth that covers them like a hat, in a
very similar way to greetings among Europeans with their hats. People sit on the floor
when there is someone who is respected.
 On the island of Taray he finds that its inhabitants, the bisayas, are less ugly than those
of Guinea but smaller and thinner. The bisayas came to the island and took it from the
black original inhabitants whom he calls from Guinea. These original inhabitants are
savage and barbarian than the newcomers Bisayas. They do not live in houses or villages,
they do not sow or collect fruits and they live, almost naked, from what they can hunt in
the mountains, deer and wild boar, like beasts.
 He talks about how the Chinese who lived on the islands cultivated trees that in nature
are very large, to a much smaller size, using just stones and some earth. This technique
would later be called bonsai in the West. For this, they used a tree called balete that is as
big as a walnut and grows in arid sites between stones and whose leaves they use in
some stews in a similar way to bay leaves or rosemary.
 With the exception of some islands, such as Mindanao, where Muslims are the majority,
he says that there is no custom of polygamy among the people.

By the time that American arrived to The Philippines, some three centuries later, the western world
knew quite well the Philippines and their inhabitants.

I can say that the native Filipinos were doing well before they were colonized. They have good
morals and values. Native Filipinos are family-oriented for having strong and close family ties. They work all
day and do all they can to feed and provide for their family because they were hardworking. They are also
known for being respectful because they use “po” and opo”, “pagmamano” or putting the back of an elders’
hand on the forehead, and calling the older siblings or elders ate or kuya. Native Filipino also god-fearing
even if they belong to different religions. Filipinos get along with different kinds of people. They were flexible.
When their neighbours are in trouble, they help. They are known being hospitable. I am really proud that I
was born a Filipino because of those good characters and their way of living before they were colonized
which we really inherited from them. I am also proud on how some colonizers were amazed on the way of
their lives.
