Art in the Marketplace

Redefining the usage of Kochi Muziris Biennale, artistic

expression and its relationship with the Society.

.’
When experiencing a work of art, a curious exchange takes place; the work projects its aura, and we project our
own emotions and precepts on the work.

• Art can act as a cultural and social commentary.

• Art influences society by changing opinions, instilling values
and translating experiences across space and time. The
knowledge of one domain, should strengthen the other.
• There is an emotional connect that Art possess over other
media.
• Art in this sense is communication; it allows people from
different cultures and different times to communicate with each
other via images, sounds and stories. Art is often a vehicle for
social change. It can give voice to the politically or socially
disenfranchised.
Idea

.’
Oldenburg calls one's "first place" the home and those that one lives with.
The "second place" is the workplace—where people may actually spend
most of their time. Third places, then, are "anchors" of community life
and facilitate and foster broader, more creative interaction. In other
words, “your third place is where you relax in public, where you

Accessible for all ,no exclusion, free or inexpensive , support for the socially backward & LGBTQIA community, public
spaces that are gender identity inclusive, provide memorable experience, entertainment & learning ,facilitate exchange,
kids friendly, equal work environment.
Aim
To Redefine the usage of Kochi Muziris Biennale, in a such a way that the region has a permanent ‘Third –place 'of its
own, transforming the urban realm into a pool of quality spaces that enhance the socio- cultural and economic facets of
the region.

Objectives
• To understand the effects of ephemeral art events in urban transformation of Kochi.
• To look at Kochi as a recent host of contemporary events and intervene on areas where the event can trigger
transformations such as heritage conservation, preservation of tangible & intangible culture, increasing permeability to
underused public spaces and to boost capacity of the host in future etc.
• To regenerate unused spaces which has high potential to uplift the society.
• To create places for artistic expression and cultural exchange, with emphasize in restoring indigenous art.
• To develop an architectural framework that accommodates various functions, revoking the time and inherent characters
of the region.
Feasibility
It is a City built out of/transplantation and engineering (Shivakumar,
2018). T.V Chandran, through the example of the Liverpool Biennale,
has critically observed that the Kochi Muziris Biennale had no local
correlation, as the community was not involved in it’s planning
(What is Wrong with (Kochi) Biennale? T. V. Chandran). A cultural
institution as a tool for urban renewal has to be evaluated by its
impacts on its local economy as well art the local art production .This
concern could be addressed through a pool of quality spaces , which
acts as a cultural hub, indigenous to the region, promoting local art ,
alongside building a multi cultural community, a spot where the unity
of India wakes up like no place else, the place that keeps on evolving.
Once all traces of the event or its venue (KMB) have gone, we fill the
gap with our memories and the emotions associated with them.
Turning the big venue, Aspinwall House into a permanent venue to
serve the local community.
