And today we are going to tell


you about multilingual schools, about their realization in Russia, risks and benefits, and also
about how multilingual education is realized in other countries.

Today the world is changing rapidly and it is really important to make progress and change
something in the sphere of education. The requirements that are imposed on schoolchildren,
young professionals, and workers in various fields are quite high. The State tries to improve the
quality of education and prepare highly educated and competitive students. Thus, one of the
ways to achieve this goal was the introduction of multilingual education in Russia. Let's watch
the video and learn more about it.

- (X) That is “good afternoon” in Italian.


- (I)Very impressive! Can you speak any languages other than English and Italian?
- (X) Un poco de Español that means a little bit of Spanish. Some Japanese, which I tried
at the beginning and also a bit of Czech language - Dobrý den, jak se máš?

- (I)Well, that is incredible. X is a headmistress of the multilingual school in


Ufa and she is also a polyglot. And today she is going to tell us about the system of
multilingual schools and their realization.

Multilingualism is good for us. Not only does speaking more than one language
keep our brains healthy as we age, but it has multiple benefits for children too, such
as giving them an academic advantage and improving their employment prospects
once they leave school. Moreover, multilingualism gives us access to more than one
culture, and improves our understanding of our own cultures.
Can you tell us what “Multilingual education” means exactly?

- (X) Multilingual Education typically refers to "first-language-first" education that is,


schooling which begins in the mother tongue and transitions to additional languages.
Typically MLE programs are situated in developing countries where speakers of
minority languages tend to be disadvantaged in the mainstream education system. There
are increasing calls to provide first-language-first education to immigrant children from
immigrant parents who have moved to the developed world.

- (I)Multilingual schools seem to be really incredible. Can you tell us about their
advantages and risks?
- (X) Actually, there are a lot of pluses. Such schools teach students not to be afraid of
mistakes. They have no fear of doing something wrong and they like studying because it
is mostly made in a playful way. Secondly, learning languages and subjects through
languages at school, mostly when you are young, help to train mechanical memory. And
it is also important to say that it is easier for children to learn languages and there are
always teachers who are ready to help them. Thirdly, multilingualism is important for the
future of our students. You know they can have attractive prospects in the future. We are
really interested in their professional realization. Well, these are the main advantages for
me, but I think the list is just endless.
- (I)What about its risks? Are there any?
- (X) Yes, of course, there are. I can tell you with what kind of them we met. Firstly, it
might be not so easy to find highly qualified teacher who knows his subject well in a
foreign language. He also should know how to teach student effectively. You know,
teachers are important, and the question of stuff is the first. Another huge risk is related
to the additional stress on the brain activity of children. Some subjects are difficult to
learn even in a native language, so children should be ready for increasing educational
demands. And there is another problem concerning learning of several languages at the
same time. Some children may mix languages, their rules, and this affects education.
- (I)It is a pity that there are risks that this educational system has to face.
- X Yes, indeed, but we try to reduce these risks as much as we can. We hope that the
system of multilingual schools will develop in our country, and many people support this
idea.
- (I) Please, tell us a little about implementation of multilingual schools in Russia.
- (X) Multilingual schools have appeared in our country not so long ago. Let me talk about
such schools in Republics of Bashkortostan and Tatarstan.
Recently the school “Adymnar” (Адымнар) has been opened in Kazan. Here students
learn such languages as Tatar, Russian and English in depth from the first year. After
primary school children choose second compulsory foreign language: Turkish, Chinese
and Arabic. And also you can attend some paid electives in French, German and Spanish.
Getting into such schools is realized on a competitive basis. They are trying to create a
new kind of ideology of schools forming such qualities of students as system thinking
and working with IT-systems.
- (I) Wow and what about Bashkortostan?
- (X) Multilingual studying is successfully realized in Bashkortostan.
One of the famous schools in Ufa is school №162 (SMART). Education here is realized
in national languages as Russian and Bashkir, and such foreign languages as French,
German and English. This school opened in 2019 and there are now a lot of pupils
successfully learning school subjects by means of foreign languages.

- (I)Russia is not the first country that suggested such kind of education. What can you say
about such experience in other countries?
- (X) Kazakhstan has projects for the implementation of trilingual education, where
students learn several languages, and then they study some subjects in English or their
native language. Also they should choose the second foreign language to study in the 5th
grade.
Switzerland has such practice too. It’s no wonder because there are four official
languages: German, French, Italian and Romansh.
Also, there is well-known Adriatic College in Montenegro. High European standards, the
best pedagogical achievements, accents on main European values that are the features of
this multilingual school.
You might have heard about CLIL that is realizes in many European countries. CLIL
refers to situations where subjects, or parts of subjects, are taught through a foreign
language with dual-focused aims, namely the learning of content, and the simultaneous
learning of a foreign language.
CLIL forms linguistic competencies that allow students to know a foreign language on a
level of their profession.
