SHOPPING SKILLS

After studying this lesson, students are able to:




Go shopping
Recognize the sections/counter in a supermarket/shopping center
Bargain a product

Situation 1

Today supermarkets are springing up in almost every large city in Indonesia. They sell all
different kinds of goods. The “cluster” below in general shows all different sections of goods
in a supermarket.

Questions

1. In which section is the following items? Write down the section on the blank spaces. For
example:

Toothpaste

2. Look at the group below. Each group consists of five items. One of which is odd. Write

Situation 2

Endang works in a big supermarket. There are a lot of foreigners shopping in the
supermarket. One of them is Mrs. Kyle who knows Endang well. Mrs.Kyle now is at the
counter paying her bill.

Endang : Hello, Mrs. Kyle. How are you?

Mrs.Kyle : I am well. Thanks

Endang : Rp.15.000,. Rp.20.000,- Rp.7.500,- Rp.25.000,. Rp.13.500,. and 10% tax.


That’s Rp.89.100,-

Mrs Kyle : Here are two 50 thousand notes.

Endang : Rp. 89.100 out of Rp.100.000 so that’s Rp.10.900,- Here’s the change,
Mrs.Kyle.

Mrs.Kyle : Thanks

Situation 3

Mrs.Carol goes shopping in the supermarket where Mrs.Kyle always buys goods. It’s the first
time Mrs.Carol has come to this supermarket. She wants to buy beef and chicken. She doesn’t
know where they are. So she asks a shop assistant, Olda.

Mrs.Carol : Excuse me. Do you know where meat section is?

Olda : Yes, madam. It’s over there at the back next to the produce. This way,
madam.

Mrs.Carol : Thank you.

Olda : Here you are, madam.

Mrs.Carol : I want a kg of beef and a kg of chicken. How much does a kg of beef cost?

Olda : A kg of beef cost Rp.65.000 and Rp.50.000 for chicken.

Mrs.Carol : I’ll have a kg of each please.

Situation 4

In some markets in Indonesia, it’s common to bargain. Study the example:

A kg of chicken Rp.50.000 – Rp.40.000 – Rp. 45.000

Customer : What does a kg of chicken cost?

Assistant : It’s Rp.50.000

Customer : That’s too expensive. How about Rp.40.000?

Assistant : No. I can’t. But I can let you have it for Rp.45.000

Customer : All right. I’ll take it
