Activity 1
Try to create a simple batik design.
Traditional Batik Making
Materials: canvas or cotton fabric, fabric paint or acrylic paint, Elmer’s washable
blue glue gel, paintbrushes, plastic place mat
Steps:
1. Cut your canvas or cotton fabric into the desired size.
2. Sketch a design. You can also cut out a picture or template and trace around its
outline onto the fabric.
3. Make simple designs like flowers or geometric shapes.
4. Place the plastic place mat under your fabric in case the glue seeps through.
Squeeze blue glue gel to trace your designs on your fabric.
5. Allow the glue to dry.
6. Prepare the colors of fabric paint or acrylic paint on your palette.
7. Paint the fabric. Adding just a little bit of water to your acrylic paint can give
beautiful results. Avoid mixing too much water with your paint because your
batik might look old and too washed-out.
8. Allow the paint to dry.
9. Remove the glue.
10. Soak the fabric in warm water for 15 to 30 minutes to soften stubborn glue
residue. After all the glue has been removed, hang the fabric to dry.
11. Once your batik has completely dried, iron it. Then, it is ready to be framed or
displayed as an artwork.
Activity 2
Try to make a simple soap carving.
Materials: soap, plastic knife
Steps:
1. Plan your design.
2. Select a hard soap suitable for your work.
3. Draw an outline of your design on the soap. Plan whether to carve thinly or
thickly.
4. Carve out your design.
