The Starbucks Barista is an electric coffee machine.

Consumers buy
the machine to get the Starbucks coffee taste in the convenience of
their own homes. The Barista will grind enough coffee for a single cup
of coffee, eradicating the need to make an entire pot. The Barista can
also adjust to fill cups of different sizes. The Barista doesn't require
extras like coffee filters. Fresh, unground coffee beans must be used
with the Barista.

Difficulty:
Easy

Instructions

things you'll need:

• Cold water
• Coffee beans
• Coffee cup

Prepare the Barista

o 1

Open the water tank cover on the Starbucks Barista and

pull the tank out by the handle.

o 2

Fill the tank with fresh, cold water. Don't fill water past the
"MAX" level line in the tank. Replace the water tank and
close the tank cover.

o 3

Insert the Barista plug into the wall outlet. The power
switch should be in the "OFF" position before you plug the
machine to the power outlet.

o 4

Prime the pump. This is only necessary if you are using it

for the first time, or haven't used the Barista in a while. To
do this, move the steam wand toward the drip tray. Turn
the knob on the pump counterclockwise. Wait for the water
to flow regularly from the wand. Then turn the knob
clockwise to shut down the flow. When the display says,
"Select Shot Size/Ready for Use" the Barista is ready to
use.

Make Coffee
o 1

Open the coffee bean container cover on the top of the

Barista. Fill the coffee bean container with the appropriate
amount of unground, coffee beans. View directions for the
specific amount of coffee beans to use.

o 2

Position a single coffee cup under the coffee dispenser

spout. You can adjust the height of the dispenser by
moving the dispenser up or down with your hands.

o 3

Press the correct brewing button once. Press either "25" (1

Single Shot), "26" (1 Long Shot) or "27" (1 Coffee). To
make two cups of coffee, press the brewing button twice.
The Barista will fill the cup with coffee.

The Starbucks Barista Espresso Machine is one of the most popular

home espresso makers on the market due to its reasonable price and
ease of use.

If you've received the Barista as a gift and the instruction manual is

long gone, the following steps will teach you how to use your machine.

Difficulty:
Moderately Easy

Instructions

things you'll need:

• Barista espresso machine

• Milk
• Espresso coffee
• Milk pitcher
• Thermometer
• Shot glass
• Flavour syrup (optional)
• Mug
• Spoon

1.
o 1

Fill the water chamber with cold, filtered water and turn
the machine on.

o 2

Prime the pump. Open the steam valve and let a few
ounces of water pass through.

o 3

If you're using flavoured coffee syrup, add an ounce of

flavoured coffee syrup to taste into the bottom of the cup
and put it off to the side.

o 4

Now that the machine is ready, your first task is to steam

the milk. Press the Steam button and wait for the light to
turn green. In the meantime, fill your milk pitcher about
halfway with cold milk of your choice and insert the
thermometer.

o 5

Steam the milk. Submerge the steam wand just below the
surface of the milk and open the steam valve. When
enough foam has formed on the top, raise the pitcher so
the steam wand reaches lower down in the milk, reducing
the amount of foam created. When the thermometer
reaches between 150 and 170 degrees Fahrenheit, close
the steam valve and put the steamed milk to the side.

o 6

Press the Steam button off, and quickly and carefully wipe
the steam wand with a damp cloth. Place a cup underneath
the steam wand and open the steam valve to get rid of any
milk that may be in the wand and prime the pump.

o 7

Now you're ready to make the espresso shot.

If you're using ground coffee, make sure that the coffee

basket is inserted into the filter head. Measure out your
coffee - about 1 1/2 Tbsp. for a single shot of espresso and
about 3 Tbsp. for a double. Clear any excess coffee
grounds from the top rim of the filter.

If you're using an espresso pod, place the pod into the

bottom of the filter and insert the pod coffee pressure
insert on top of the pod with the pod basket impression
facing up.

o 8

Insert the coffee filter into the filter head, turning the filter
handle as far to the right as it will go. Place a shot glass
under the filter holes to catch the espresso. When the
Ready light comes on, press the Brew button.

o 9

The espresso will pour into the shot glass. When you have
enough coffee, press the Brew button to stop the flow of
espresso.

o 10

Pour the espresso shot into the bottom of the mug with the
coffee syrup. Grab your pitcher and pour the steamed milk
over the coffee and syrup. A spoon will help hold back the
foam. Leave enough room at the top of the mug for your
desired amount of foam and spoon it in.

o 11

You may now enjoy your tasty latte.

OUR STARBUCKS MISSION

To inspire and nurture the human spirit— one person, one cup,
and one neighbourhood at a time.

Here are the principles of how we live that every day:

Our Coffee
It has always been, and will always be, about quality. We’re passionate
about ethically sourcing the finest coffee beans, roasting them with
great care, and improving the lives of people who grow them. We care
deeply about all of this; our work is never done.

Our Partners
We’re called partners, because it’s not just a job, it’s our passion.
Together, we embrace diversity to create a place where each of us can
be ourselves. We always treat each other with respect and dignity. And
we hold each other to that standard.

Our Customers
When we are fully engaged, we connect with, laugh with, and uplift the
lives of our customers— even if just for a few moments. Sure, it starts
with the promise of a perfectly made beverage, but our work goes far
beyond that. It’s really about human connection.

Our Stores
When our customers feel this sense of belonging, our stores become a
haven, a break from the worries outside, a place where you can meet
with friends. It’s about enjoyment at the speed of life—sometimes slow
and savoured, sometimes faster. Always full of humanity.

Our Neighbourhood
Every store is part of a community, and we take our responsibility to
be good neighbours seriously. We want to be invited in wherever we do
business. We can be a force for positive action— bringing together our
partners, customers, and the community to contribute every day. Now
we see that our responsibility—and our potential for good—is even
larger. The world is looking to Starbucks to set the new standard, yet
again. We will lead.

Our Shareholders
We know that as we deliver in each of these areas, we enjoy the kind
of success that rewards our shareholders. We are fully accountable to
get each of these elements right so that Starbucks—and everyone it
touches—can endure and thrive.

Onward.
The World's Best Coffee

At Starbucks, we sample coffees from around the world – more than

150,000 cups a year, in fact. We have to taste that many because we
seek only the finest, richest and most interesting beans.

So if you want to find the world’s best coffees for yourself, your journey
begins here.

Tips for brewing exceptional coffee

Selecting great coffee is only the first step towards enjoying a wonderful
cup. How you grind, brew and store your coffee is almost as important as
the coffee you choose.

Grind
For a fresher cup, grind your beans just before brewing. You brewing
method should dictate how your coffee should be ground; coarse for a
press, medium for brewed coffee, fine for espresso.

Proportion
Measure 10g (2 Tbsp) to 180mL (6 fl oz) water. To adjust your coffee's
strength, add water after brewing.

Water
Fresh, good-tasting water is an essential component in brewing a great
cup. If your local tap water tastes fresh and pure, then it's likely to make
a good cup of coffee. Otherwise, consider using filtered or bottled water.

Freshness
To maintain their rich flavour, store your coffee at room temperature in a
opaque, airtight container. Our FlavourLock™ bag meets this requirement
and will keep your beans fresh after a full week after opening.

Explore coffees by region

As with wine, the land where a coffee is grown creates subtle flavor
differences. We have coffees from America, Africa and the Pacific.

Explore coffees by growing region.

Learn more about the coffee experience

The history of coffee is an incredibly interesting story that

stretches back 1,000 years. But if you’re new to this history, you’ll want
to know more about how coffee is grown, how it is roasted roasted, how
it is prepared, and what to look for when tasting.

The Roast Story

We're passionate about the way we roast our coffee.

We call our roast the Starbucks Roast®. It's more than a color: it is the
cumulative, positive, and dramatic result of roasting each coffee in a
unique way, helping each one reach its maximum flavor. The color can
be duplicated -- but the taste cannot.

Life of Coffee

The coffee bean begins its life as the prize inside a bright red coffee
cherry. It takes about five years before a coffee tree produces a
harvestable crop of cherries, and each tree only produces the
equivalent of a pound of roasted beans per year. To prepare the
pebble-like green coffee beans for roasting, growers process them
using either the natural or the washed method. Through the natural
method, ripe coffee cherries are allowed to dry on the tree or on the
ground before the beans are removed by hulling. Through the washed
method, the beans are immediately separated from the cherries,
submerged in a vat of water, and then dried on large patios or with
modern equipment.

Green coffee beans are heated in a large rotating drum, then their
transformation begins. After about 5 to 7 minutes of intense heat,
much of their moisture evaporates. The beans turn a yellow color and
smell a little like popcorn. After about 8 minutes in the roaster, the
"first pop" occurs. The beans double in size, crackling as they expand.
They are now light brown. Very sour one-dimensional flavor notes are
dominant, while more complex coffee flavors haven't yet developed.

After 10-11 minutes in the roaster, the beans reach an even brown
color, and oil starts to appear on the surface of the bean. At this
roasting time (different for each coffee, but usually somewhere
between 11 and 15 minutes), the full flavor potential begins to develop
in the beans, bringing all of their attributes into balance. The "second
pop" signals that the coffee is almost ready. The moment that the
coffee is released into the cooling tray is a memorable one. The smell
of freshly roasted coffee fills the air, along with the sound of applause
created by the final clapping of the "second pop."

How Coffee is Grown

Coffee is grown all around the world, but only on a belt between the
Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.

The region where coffee is grown plays a big role in determining its
taste – the native soil, climate and processing methods used in
cultivation all impart a distinctive flavor to the beans. A French
winemaker would call this “goût de terroir” – the “taste of the place.”

Geographically, there are three global coffee-growing regions: East

Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, Southeast Asia and the Pacific, and
Latin America.
The hard-working coffee tree

Like many other fruits, coffee cherries grow on trees. The soil, climate,
altitude, and surrounding plants that a coffee tree is exposed to during
growth affect the flavor of the beans it produces.

Some coffee trees have the potential to grow to a height of 30 to 40

feet. However, most are kept much shorter for ease of harvest. The
average coffee tree bears only enough cherries each season to
produce about half a kilogram of roasted coffee. It takes a whole year
for the tree to produce what most people can enjoy in a single week!

Arabicas and robustas

There are two commercially important coffee species: coffea arabica

and coffea canephora (robusta). Arabica coffee grows best at high
altitudes, has a much more refined flavor than other species, and
contains about 1% caffeine by weight. As the name indicates, robusta
coffee is a robust species, resistant to disease, with a high yield per
plant. It flourishes at lower elevations and produces coffee with
harsher flavor characteristics. Starbucks buys only the highest quality
arabica coffees available.

Here comes the harvest

At harvest time, coffee trees are laden with bright red coffee cherries.
An unroasted coffee bean is simply the pit of the coffee cherry.

The skin of the coffee cherry is very thick, with a slightly bitter flavor.
The fruit beneath the skin, however, is intensely sweet with a texture
similar to grape. Beneath the fruit is the parchment, which serves as a
protective pocket for the seed, much like the small pockets that
protect the seeds of an apple. Remove the parchment and you’ll
generally find two green coffee beans, ready for washing and roasting.

Coffee Tasting Techniques

Ultimately, tasting is simply about comparing and contrasting. When

you taste just one coffee at a time, it’s hard to do with no context to
compare against.

But if you try two or three coffees, you can compare them not only in
terms of your personal preference, but also in terms of aroma, acidity,
body, and flavor. Here’s one tip though: When tasting more than one
coffee, always taste lighter bodied coffees first and work up to fuller
bodied coffees.

Aroma

This is the first hint of how your coffee will taste. In fact, most of your
sense of taste actually comes from your sense of smell – which is why
coffee can smell so sublime and taste so satisfying.

Acidity

In coffee-tasting terms, this doesn't mean sour or bitter. Acidity means

a lively, tangy, palate-cleansing property, ranging from low to high.
Think of the range from still water to sparkling water, and you'll get the
idea. A Latin American coffee like Colombia Nariño Supremo is quite
lively on the tongue, so we say it has a high acidity. In contrast, a
coffee like Sulawesi is quite smooth and mellow – it has a low acidity.

Body

This is the weight or thickness of the beverage on your tongue. Body

ranges from light to full. To give you an idea, we sometimes use the
wordy “syrupy” to describe a full-bodied coffee like Sumatra.

Flavor

This is the all-important melding of aroma, acidity, and body that

creates an overall impression. What does the flavor of the coffee
remind you of? For example, drinking Kenya often reminds us of
grapefruit. There’s just a hint of citrus to it. But when we say that, we
don’t mean that Kenya is grapefruit-flavored – it still tastes like coffee.
There are many different ways to describe the flavor of coffee, just as
there are many different ways to describe snow.
