Read the article Google Execs Have Ideas on How to Run Your Business

business/) and discuss the following topics:

A well-known Google’s successful formula is to release 20% of its employees’ time to work
on anything they want. When applying this approach to a project, do you think that the
absence of a structured decision-making process, driven by the project manager,
jeopardizes the delivery on cost, on time and on the quality of the project? Explain why or
why not.

To me an in-depth look at the above-mentioned point, I do not believe this time would jeopardize
delivery on cost, time and quality of a project. I think a percentage of unstructured time for the
employees allows for less stress and creativity and more ways to think outside the box. When I
think of a company I would want to emulate, it would be Google because of their extraordinary
success. 20% of free time is a reasonable amount of time considering we would have to take
breaks throughout the day anyway and this would be more of a constructive approach. In 2013,

m
er as
Le stated that Google’s market capitalization breached a record high of 260 billion dollars in
2013 and shares soared over 900% and this all resulted from the continuous innovation and its

management practices. That 20% of unstructured time could be allowed to encourage
interactions between employees and teams within the department, all critical for the integrity of

different departments or sections on bridging gaps.

Le went further to state that, “By allowing its engineers to spend 20% of their work week on
projects that interest them, Google is able to tap into the many talents of its employees.”

After researching this topic, I’ve found many 20% rules relating to the workplace and

productivity. A survey taken by a company Tork, revealed that 20% of North American workers
vi y re

worry their bosses won’t think they are hardworking if they take regular lunch breaks, while 13%
worry their co-workers will judge them (Kohll, 2018). By allowing this time for freedom of
thought and a break, productivity will increase, an improved sense of mental well-being, a
creativity boost, and even more time for healthy habits such as self-care activity (Kohll, 2018).

The article addresses the subject of remote working and stresses Google’s view on not
letting people work from home. Do you agree or disagree that a project team could see in
this approach as a lack of trust? Explain you reasoning.
is

I agree with Google on this point. For people who are administrative and more technical and who
Th

work well without the interruptions and distractions of work it may be different. But the idea of
not working at home for a project manager I do agree. Project management is about collaboration
and getting new ideas and working with people. “A lot of the conversations are informal; the
sh

entity moves forward when people are around. It’s very difficult to do that, even with modern
communications technology, when people are remote” (Bergstein, 2014). A group of people who
need to work on a project together need to be face-to-face and with a successful company has
tried many ways of having people work remotely.

Don’t reinvent the wheel, sometimes it’s better to learn from the most successful companies
rather than make your own mistakes.
