Rubber Materials
In order to obtain the longest possible lifetime for rubber seals it is essential to choose the right quality for the actual duty. Consequently when choosing
rubber quality, the characteristics of the different rubber types should be considered. All product wetted rubber material are in conformity of FDA.

EPDM Rubber (Ethylene Propylene)

EPDM rubber is widely used within the food industry as it is resistant to most products used in this sector. Another advantage is that it may be used to a
recommend max. temperatures of 140°C (244°F). However, there is one essential limitation, EPDM is not resistant to organic and non-organic oils and
fats. The resistance to ozone is excellent.

Actylonitrile Butadiene Rubber, NBR

NBR is the rubber type most frequently used for technical purposes. It is quite resistant to most hydrocarbons, e.g oil, grease and fat. It is sufficiently
resistant to diluted lye and nitric acid and may be used to a recommend max. 95°C (203°F). As NBR is attacked by ozone it may not be exposed to
ultraviolet rays and should thus consequently be stored so that this is avoided.

Silicone Rubber, Q
The most significant quality of silicone rubber is that it can be applied from temperatures below -50°C (-58°F) to approx. + 180°C (356°F) and still
keep its elasticity. The chemical resistance is satisfactory to most products. However, undiluted lye and acids as well as hot water and steam may
destroy silicone rubber. The resistance to ozone is good.

Fluorine Rubber, FPM

FPM is often used when other rubber types are unsuited, especially at high temperatures up to approx. 180°C (356°F). The chemical resistance is good
to most products, however hot water, steam, lye, acid and alcohol should be avoided. The resistance to ozone is good.

Hydrogenated actylonitrileButadiene Rubber, HNBR

Mechanically strong and normally resistant to ozone and strong oxidizers, animal and vegetable fats, nonpolar solvents, oils and lubricants, water and
aqueous solutions. The recommend max. temperature is 130°C (266°F).

Perfluoroalkoxy polymer, PFA

PFA is very similar to PTFE, but opposite to those PFA is thermo plastic and has minimal porosity. PFA has a very high mechanical strength which
makes it a perfect choice when dealing with abbrasive products. The PFA seal offers longer service intervals. The recommend max. temperature
for the PFA seal is 90°C (194°F).

Product and chemical resistance of flexible rubber materials

The information below is intended as an aid in selecting the best rubber quality for an actual application. It is not possible to state any general lifetime
of rubber seals as many factors influence it: chemical attack, temperature, mechanical wear etc. Extreme temperatures, even within the generally
accepted limits, may worsen other kinds of attack and thus reduce the lifetime.

pasteurization, raw milk cooling, media heating/
cooling and CIP (cleaning-in-place) heating.

FusionLine
Alfa Laval FusionLine is the world’s first plate heat exchanger
with open flow channels and no contact points on the product
side. The 4–6 mm open channel makes it ideal for handling low
to medium viscosity products with fibres and particulates, such
as juices and soft drinks, prepared foods, soups and sauces.

This unique design and performance is made possible by fusion-

bonded plate cassettes on the media side, together with a
special gasket. The FusionLine combines the energy efficiency,
accessibility and modularity of plate technology with the viscous
and particulate-handling capabilities of tube technology.
AlfaCond

Fusion-bonded plate heat
exchangers (AlfaNova)
AlfaNova plate heat exchangers are the first
in the world to be manufactured from 100%
stainless steel. Thanks to AlfaFusion –
Alfa Laval’s revolutionary technology for
bonding stainless steel components – they
can withstand even extreme temperatures
and pressure fatigue conditions.

Their exceptional performance suits AlfaNova

plate heat exchangers to demanding duties in
a broad range of industrial applications and
utilities. Often employed to heat water or CIP
(cleaning-in-place) solution by means of water
and steam, they can also be used for general
heating and cooling duties.

Brazed plate heat

exchangers
Alfa Laval’s brazed plate heat exchangers
are extremely compact – a result of high
heat transfer coefficients, small hold-up
volumes and the use of thin materials.
The stainless steel plates are brazed into a
package without the use of gaskets, with
copper serving as the brazing material.

Operating costs are reduced by the heat

exchangers’ high thermal efficiency, while
the rectangular shape and frontpositioned
connections make for easy installation.
Resistant to heat, pressure, vibration,
and above all corrosion, brazed heat
exchangers are perfect in utilities such
as heating water with steam.
Scraped surface and
tubular heat exchangers

Contherm
The Alfa Laval Contherm scraped surface heat
exchanger (SSHE) handles any viscous, sticky and/or
heat-sensitive process fluids as long as they are
pumpable. It is widely used within the food and
personal care industries.

Available in different versions, Contherm can handle

products with low to extremely high viscosities or those
containing particulates as well as special application
and process requirements, such as evaporation.

ViscoLine
The Alfa Laval ViscoLine range is a series of highly
efficient tubular heat exchangers designed for gentle
handling of low to medium viscosity products or
products containing particulates. Widely used in
the food and beverage industries, it is suitable for
heating, cooling, pasteurization, UHT treatment,
heat regeneration and other heat transfer duties.
UltraPure tubular
heat exchangers
The biopharm industry requires exceptional certainty, not
only when it comes to product hygiene, but also when
it comes to isolating products and media. For this reason,
Alfa Laval offers a number of specially developed, high-
quality tubular heat exchangers.

Pharma-X
Designed for point-of-use cooling in the bio-
pharm industry, the Pharma-X tube-in-tube heat
exchanger eliminates the risk of contamination
between the product and cooling media. It con-
sists of three discrete tubes arranged one within
the other, curved through 180º to create a bend
that takes up thermal expansion.

The Pharma-X heat exchanger can be used in

many application areas, including point-of-use
cooling on WFI (Water For Injection) ring mains,
cooling/heating of pure water in the biopharm
industry and cooling/heating of distilled water/
WFI for processing equipment.

PharmaLine
PharmaLine is a double tube sheet (DTS) shell-and-
tube heat exchanger that provides full drainability
and prevents the risk of cross-contamination. Its
bundle of seamless, electropolished tubes handles
the flow of product media, with service media
running outside the tubes in a crossflow.

Since the unit is flexible in design, size and material,

it can be used in any hygienic application with high
demands. Typical uses for PharmaLine are in water
systems, water for injection, purified water and CIP
(cleaning-in-place) systems. PharmaLine is also

processing needs
Optimizing the performance of hygienic processes is a challenge best met
with expertise. Alfa Laval expertise is the result of years of accumulated
knowledge and a comprehensive research and development programme.

With this foundation, we work closely with our channel partners

to help companies extract the most value from raw materials,
minimize waste and emissions, and deliver safe and hygienic
products. Ultimately, our ambition is to help companies supply
quality products to consumers at competitive prices.

Alfa Laval has served as the standard bearer for the production
of hygienic products since Gustaf de Laval invented the centrifu-
gal separator to separate cream from milk more than a century
ago. That same ingenuity is applied to all our hygienic compo-
nents and solutions that safeguard the flavour, texture and
appearance of food, dairy products and beverages.

For the pharmaceutical, biopharm and personal care industries,

our contributions not only entail hygienic design and superior
performance but comprehensive documentation and solutions
that are easy to validate. Which in turn raise the quality, clean-
liness and uniformity of the final products.

Safeguarding hygienic applications requires entrusting your

processes to the safe, competent care of a reliable partner.
With Alfa Laval you are in good hands.
Service for any brand
Having Alfa Laval service your heat exchangers is more than just practical – it
makes good business sense. Alfa Laval’s local specialists know your industry
and its needs, but are also part of a global network of service and support.

For some, the Perfect Life is Natural Fruit Juices

Application
Pasteurisation and general cooling/heating of fruit juices and other
liquid food products which contain pulp or fibres.
Working principle
A plate heat exchanger consists of a pack of corrugated metal plates
with port holes for the passage of two fluids between which heat
transfer will take place.
The plate pack is assembled between a fixed frame plate and a
movable pressure plate and compressed by tightening bolts.
The plates are fitted with a gasket which seals the inter-plate channel
and directs the fluids into alternate channels. The number of plates
is determined by the flow rate, physical properties of the fluids and
the temperature program.
Connections may be located in frame plate and pressure plate and if
multi section PHE, also in connection plate.

The WideStream ® plate

The WideStream® plate has a special pattern with few contact points,
which allows products containing pulp & fibres to pass without
blocking the passages. This results in long operational times without
interruptions. The ports have a diameter enabling cleaning in place
(CIP) with the same flow used in the process itself. The minimum
of contact points between the WideStream® plates results in easy
.
cleaning with short cleaning cycles. The plate pattern is designed for Technical Data

Cross-contamination safe double wall plates

Application
General cooling/heating for pharmaceutical, brewery and beverage
applications when a mix-proof design is required. To secure the
cross-contamination safe feature, water or water-like fluids are
recommended.

Working principles
Channels are formed between the plates and the corner ports are
arranged so that the two media flow through alternate channels.
A unique distribution area provides an efficient flow over the plate
surface. The heat is transferred through the plate between the
channels, and a complete counter-current flow is created for the
highest possible efficiency. The chevron corrugation of the plates
provides the passage between the plates, supports each plate against
the adjacent one and enhances turbulence. The high turbulence
resulting in efficient heat transfer and high surface shear forces to
minimise fouling and the build-up of biofilm. The plates are reversible
and have a parallel flow, which means that only one type of gasket
is needed.
Gemini plates
The Gemini plates consist of two plates with a small air gap in between.
The Gemini double wall plates will give a cross-contamination safe
design, as a crack in a plate will not result in mixing of the two media.

First Choice in Hygienic Applications - at low Capacity

Application
Pasteurization and general cooling/heating of dairy and brewery
products, fruit juices and similar food products.

Working principle
The heat exchanger consists of a number of corrugated plates
clamped together in a frame and sealed at the edges by means of
gaskets.
The plates have ports at the corners and the gaskets are so arranged
that the two media flow through alternate passages between the
plates. The two media are separated by the plates and cannot be
mixed. Heat is transferred through the plates, from the hot medium
to the cold.
One unit can contain several heat exchangers, separated by
connection plates with interchangeable connections.

The best Choice for Duties in Process and Utilities

Application
Cooling and heating of dairy, brewery, beverage and viscous products
and pasteurization in some applications.
Working principle
The plate heat exchanger consists of a pack of corrugated metal
plates with portholes for the passage of two fluids between which
heat transfer will take place.
The plate pack is assembled between a frame plate and a pressure
plate and compressed by tightening bolts.
The plates are fitted with a gasket which seals the channel and directs
the fluids into alternate channels. The number of plates are determined
by the flow rate, physical properties of the fluids, pressure drop and
temperature program. The plate corrugations promote fluid turbulence
and support the plates against differential pressure.

Gaskets
The plates are supplied with glue-free Clip-On gaskets, which are easy
to replace even with the plates still standing in the frame.

ky Alfa Laval Pharma-line S
Double tube sheet shell and tube heat exchanger

Applications
The Pharma-line S is used in pharmaceutical water systems; Water
For Injection (WFI) and Purified Water (PW) and for heating or cooling
of pharmaceutical products.

.
Working principles
The Pharma-line S is designed in line with ASME BPE, USP and
cGMP requirements. In the Pharma-line the risk of mixing between the
product and the heating or cooling (service) medium is eliminated as
a result of the double tube sheet design. The product flows in the
tubes while the service medium flows in a cross flow around the tubes,
inside the shell. The service medium is sealed in the shell by the first
tube sheet and the second tube sheet seals the product. In the event
of a leak, the leakage of either fluid is easily visually detected.

Three Contherm Core units on frame

Working principle
Product is pumped into the Contherm heat exchange cylinder. As
it flows through the cylinder, it is continuously mixed and removed
from the cylinder’s precisely finished wall by the scraping blades. This
scraping action results in thin film product heating or cooling, a surface
free from fouling deposits, and a corresponding high heat transfer
rate. The drive can be adjusted for varied rotor speeds – an important
feature when a number of different products are to be processed.
Heating or cooling media flows in the annular space between the
Contherm’s heat exchange cylinder and the insulated jacket.
When liquid media is used, a spiral coil is installed in the annulus to
provide higher heat transfer efficiency. When utilizing steam or flooded
expansion refrigerants such as liquid ammonia or Freon, the coil within
the Contherm Core annulus is removed. The use of these refrigerants
requires other ancillary equipment such as refrigeration accumulators
and control valves, products that Alfa Laval can provide.
On start-up, air is completely purged from the Contherm. At the end
of a processing run, the product can be drained or pushed by water,
resulting in minimal product loss.
The Contherm’s maximum flow rate is application specific and
determined by the temperature program, nature of the product and
type of duty.

ky Alfa Laval Contherm® Scraped-Surface Heat Exchanger (SSHE)
Heat Transfer Solution for Low to High Fouling Products

Applications
The Contherm® scraped-surface heat exchanger (SSHE) has found
use within many different processes and applications for manufacturing
food, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, health and beauty
products, etc. It is particularly suited for processing viscous, heat
sensitive, sticky or chunky (containing particulates) products that are
to be pumped.
It can be used in a broad range of processing environments, including:
aseptic, heating, slush-freezing, sterilization, cooling, pasteurization,
crystallization and phase change.

Design
The standard design of Contherm includes:
• Standard execution is vertically mounted on a column. The column
needs to be secured to either a wall or the ceiling.
• Rotor is driven by electrical motor installed on upper end of the unit.
• Rotor is placed on ball bearings. Mechanical seals at each end of
Contherm prevent product leakage and external contamination.
• Rotating scraping blades are secured to pins welded to the rotor.
• A hydraulic lifting device provides an easy way to lower the rotor
and blades for maintenance and inspection.
• Tangential inlet/outlet ports provide gentler handling of the product,
resulting in better product integrity and quality, by allowing product
. to enter and exit cylinder in same direction as the turning rotor. Flow Rate
• It is designed to comply with the most stringent industry standards. The Contherm’s maximum flow rate is application specific and
USDA and 3A hygienic design certifications are available for special determined by the temperature program, nature of the product, and
executions. type of duty.
• Contherm is manufactured according to ASME and PED. Other
pressure vessel codes are available on request.
The Contherm SSHE can operate with a large flexible range of media
types, such as: steam, thermal oil, water, glycol, brine, Freon™ or
ammonia and other liquified gas refrigerants.
Working principle
Product enters the cylinder through the lower product head and flows
upwards through the cylinder. At the same time, the heating/cooling
media travels in counter-current flow through the narrow annular
channel between the heat transfer wall and the insulated jacket.
Rotating blades continuously remove product from the cylinder wall in
order to ensure uniform transfer of heat between media and product.
An optional coil in the annulus increases media velocity, adding to
the heat transfer efficiency.
Product exits the cylinder through the upper tangential port. On
start-up, air is completely purged from the Contherm. At the end of a
processing run, the product can be drained or “chased-out” by water
resulting in minimal product loss.
Scraper configuration, rotor diameter and rotor speed can be varied to
suit the properties of the particular product flowing through the cylinder.
Numerous Contherm configurations are available. Trained,
knowledgeable Alfa Laval staff are able to customize each Contherm
unit by selecting the appropriate materials, features and options to
meet each customer’s exact requirements.

Our customers’ processes and applications are by no means identical, and the same is true of the Contherm range of scraped-surface heat
exchangers. For products that are easy to process, a basic Contherm design consisting of polymer blades and single mechanical seals would be a
suitable solution. Whereas for highly demanding products and processes, the materials and components need to be more rugged and more durable
in order to ensure dependable operation.

1.5
ky Alfa Laval Convap® Scraped-Surface Evaporator
Removing moisture from viscous products

Application
Convap® is a specially modified Contherm® unit designed as a
continuous scraped-surface evaporator. This makes it particularly
suited for concentrating viscous, sticky and/or heat sensitive products
that tend to cause fouling in static types of heat exchanger.
Convap can effectively concentrate products to extremely high solids
levels, in some cases up to 99%. And it is often used to process
products that rapidly become viscous as they undergo concentration.
Convap can function as a preevaporator to any dryer type, as it makes
the overall process from concentration to drying of a product more
efficient.
Typical Convap applications include the production of purées, mashes,
pulps, concentrate and pastes from fruits and vegetables. Convap
units are also suitable for processing a wide selection of confectionery,
protein solutions such as whey protein, lecithin, sugar solutions,
chemical and pharmaceutical solutions, and for concentrating plant
waste materials into heavy slurry for easy disposal. Convap units can
also be used for concentrating coffee and other extracts.

Design
The standard Convap scraped-surface evaporator is based on a
modular design and is normally mounted vertically on a wall or column.

from top to bottom in a counter-current path at high velocity, in order
to optimize heat transfer to the product.

.
A highly engineered rotating scraping assembly, fitted with blades that
continuously remove fouling material from both inner and outer walls,
is mounted within the product path. The rotating scraping assembly
can vary in speed to ensure the most effective scraping and best
product quality.

.
At the end of production, the product can be drained or removed by
water, resulting in minimal product loss. The Contherm Max can then
be Cleaned in Place (CIP) using recommended guidelines for cleaning.
