How to write a reflection statement

Introduction

- Introduce your piece by name and text type.

- Explain the purpose and audience to which you were writing

Sentence Starters:

➢ My informative/persuasive/discursive piece, “Name of piece” is an exploration... ➢ My aim in


this piece of writing was to...

➢ My intention in writing...

- Explain why this piece is for that particular audience.

Sentence Starters:

➢ This piece can... for my intended audience...

➢ I believe the form/structure of my writing piece allows/shows...

➢ My writing piece is designed to help the audience reflect/challenge/think ... ➢ I wrote this
piece for...

➢ To appeal to my intended audience...

➢ My writing piece is likely to connect to...audience

- General explanation of the focus or key component of your piece – specific language, point of
view, character, setting, stimulus etc.

Paragraph 1 and 2 (EVALUATION OF YOUR OWN PIECE OF WRITING AND PRESCRIBED

The focus muse be on your own piece of writing, evidence should be used from the prescribed
text to justify

or show how it helped your piece. Always refer back to your own piece.

- Explain a focus or key component of your own writing piece that links to what you used from
the studied text.

- Give a quote from your own piece.

- Evaluate the overall use of this in your own piece.

General Reflection – Year 12

School assessment allows for an extended reflection. This scaffold is designed for 700 – 800
words.

Introduction

- Introduce your piece by name and text type.

- Explain the topic, purpose and audience.

- Link back to purpose with examples. Does not have to be a quote.
