 !he construction of the sitar generally took place
in fourteen steps, divided into two ma9or sections. !he first
section was from raw materials to where it is all as-
sembled, with no ornamentation or carving. !he second
section was through inlay and engraving, carving, finish
work, and setting up for playing.

!he appropriate gourd is selected for the specific

instrument in mind. !he largest gourds are reserved for
gentlemanJs tambura or surbahar. !he initial cuts are made
with the >H >/@K tumba saw Lsee JDJ in saw illustrationN.
=ometimes itJs necessary to improve a little on Sitar/ gentle#an1s ta#$"ra/ and s"r$ahar t"#$as/ shaped
what nature provides in the shape of the t"#$a. !o do this, and drying in the s"n6
after it is cut to the general shape to be used, the

gourd is soaked in a large tub of water for a few

hours. It turns almost to the consistency of
thick leather. =ticks of !un or bamboo are then
wedged in the appropriate spots to give the
t"#$a its desired shape. !his is all done by eye,
with a few cursory measurements of height and
width. !hey are then set aside to dry hard in
the sun.
!he ePact shape of the ta$li is not
predetermined. It is taken from the outside
outline of the t"#$a and g"l" after they have
been shaped. !his varies from instrument to
instrument, yet within certain parameters of
dimension and proportion. =o, the actual siQe
and shape of the gourd determines the shape
and siQe of an individual instrument.
!here is a standard length of @B >/@K
from the pta*ta$li 9oint to the targen Lfirst nutN,
but since the shape of the ta$li is based on the
shape of the t"#$a and the ePact position of the
