Modes of Reproductionof Animals
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) was designed and written with you in mind to help you
master the Rich Content and Interactivity of Web 2.0 and the use of ICT for Social Change.
The scope of this learning material focuses on many different learning situations. Moreover,
the language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of learners and the lessons are
arranged following the standard sequence of the course. Hence, the order in which you read
them can be changed to correspond with the textbook you are now using.
Directions: Choose the letter of the correct answer. Write the letter of your answer on a
separate sheet of paper.

Describing the Different Modes
of Reproduction in Animals
Animals have different ways of reproduction which enable their kind to continually flourish on
earth. This Learning Activity Sheets discusses ways which animals reproduce. It describes
that animals can reproduce sexually or asexually. It also classifies animals that are hatched
from eggs and born alive.
Study the pictures of the following animals below. How are these animals similar? How are
they different?
Animals can only produce a new individual when two parents are present. This is called
sexual reproduction. Frogs, chickens, cows, and many other animals reproduce by sexual
reproduction.
Sexual reproduction takes place when sex cells from two parent animals (one male and
one female) unite to form a new animal.
Animals have sex organs that produce sex cells or gametes. These gametes contain
information about the new organism. There are two types of sex cells or gametes. The egg
cell for females and sperm cell for males.
Fertilization takes place when a sperm cell unites with the egg cell. The fertilized egg is
called a zygote which develops into an embryo. The embryo undergoes continuous
development until it eventually grows into a new born animal. Fertilization in animals may be
internal or external.
15
Internal fertilization happens when the
male animal releases sperm cells into
the body of the female animal to fertilize
the egg cell. The embryo can either
develop inside the female body until it is
born alive or develop inside an egg laid
by the female. Insects, birds, cats and
cows undergo internal fertilization.
External fertilization occurs outside the bodies of the parents. The female releases eggs
into the water or attaches them to a plant
or rock. The male then releases sperm
cells over the eggs to fertilize them. Most
frogs and fishes undergo external
fertilization.
Asexual reproduction does not need one male and one female parent to produce an
offspring. A single parent organism simply makes identical copies of itself.
15
The sea anemone is able to reproduce by binary fission. It splits its polyp or body into
halves, then it grow into two new sea anemone.
Budding happens when an outgrowth of the parent animal develops into a new animal.
Plants also develop a new plant through the process of budding.
jellyfish hydra
Hydra and jellyfish are some examples of animals that can reproduce through budding.
A bulge appears on the parent’s body, grows into a bud, and eventually becomes a
miniature copy of the parent. The young continues to grow while still attached to the parent
and eventually detaches when it is mature enough to survive by itself.
Advantages of Asexual Reproduction:
• The organism does not need a partner for it to reproduce.
• The organism develops faster than those produced in sexual reproduction.
Disadvantages of Asexual Reproduction:
• Any disease or negative characteristic of the parent will be passed onto the offspring
since it is very identical to the parent.

Animals have different modes of reproduction. Some animals are egg-laying or oviparous
animals while some are born alive or viviparous animals.
Some animals lay their eggs to the environment. These animals are called egg-laying
animals or oviparous. The laid eggs by the female animal are developed outside her body.
The time between the laying of the egg and the hatching of the is called the incubation
period. Examples of animals that lay eggs are birds, snakes, frogs, turtles, lizards and
insects.
Some animals retain and nourish the fertilized egg inside the body of the female parent. The
fertilized egg develops into an embryo that grows while receiving the nourishment from the
mother through the placenta. The time between fertilization and birth of the live young is
called gestation. Animals that undergo this process are born alive or viviparous animals.
Cats, cows, dogs, and whales are animals which are born alive.

Activity 2.
A. Write TRUE if the statement is correct and FALSE if it is not.
__________ 1.The sexual and asexual are the two main modes of reproduction.
___________ 2. Fission happens when an outgrowth of the parent animal develops into a
new animal.
___________ 3. Reproduction is the ability of a living thing to make copies of itself.
___________ 4. Hydras reproduce themselves through the process of budding.
___________ 5. Budding happens when the parent animal divides itself into two.
__________ 6. The reproductive system of female dogs and humans are very similar.
___________ 7. Fertilization is important even in asexual reproduction.
___________ 8. Sexual reproduction is making a copy of the organism with a single parent.
___________ 9. External fertilization takes place in frogs and butterflies.

• The animal splits or divides itself into two. The animal produced is also
identical to the parent organism.
• The parent organism produces an outgrowth or a bud on its body. The bud
then develops and when mature, this bud detaches from the body of the
parent.
