The procedure for finding parts needed to service ECUs is different from other sections in this catalog. Information
you must provide to your Allison Transmission parts supplier comes from the ECU itself and Not From the
Transmission Nameplate. Use the following procedures when seeking ECU service parts:
A. When replacing a remote ECU or an ECU and the integral shift selector:
1. Use the instructions in B 2 below to determine if the ECU being replaced is BASIC or MAX FEATURE.
2. Order the uncalibrated core ECU needed from the part information in this section.
3. Order a MAX FEATURE ECU when unable to determine which type is being replaced.
B. When replacing only an ECU which has an integral shift selector (and the shift selector is known to
be good):
1. Separate the ECU from the shift selector by removing 4 slotted Torx® head screws shown in
Figure 72–1A. This separation and the reinstallation must be done while a static ground is established.
Use an anti-static wristband (Kent-Moore BT8639B, or equivalent).
2. To order a replacement ECU, determine whether a Basic or Max Feature ECU is needed. Use one of the
following sources:
• From an ECU label — Figure 72–1A shows typical ECU labels. The word Basic or Max
Feature will be found after TYPE on the 2 inch x 4 inch label (at callout e). Also, when B is the
first character under MODEL NO. on the 1 inch x 4 inch label (callout n), the ECU is Basic.
When M is the first character under MODEL NO. on the 1 inch x 4 inch label, the ECU is Max
Feature.
• From a DDR screen — When the ECU is still functioning electronically, use the Diagnostic
Data Reader (DDR) to determine if the ECU is Basic or Max Feature. Connect the DDR
(Pro-Link® 9000) to the connector provided on the transmission wiring harness. Select ECU
Calibration Information. See Figure 72–1A for typical DDR screen information. When the
first character of ECU S/N is B, the ECU is Basic. When M is the first character under ECU
S/N, the ECU is Max Feature.
• When ECU Type is Unknown — When unable to determine the ECU type, order a Max
Feature ECU.
3. If you need a Basic ECU, order parts from Group A, which follows Figure 72–1B. You now have an un-
calibrated ECU with a remote cover attached by 4 slotted Torx® head screws.
4. If you need a Max Feature ECU, order parts from Group B, C, or D, which follow Figure 72–1B. You
now have an uncalibrated ECU with a remote cover attached by 4 slotted Torx® head screws.
5. If you need replacement ECU support hardware, order from Group E, which follows Figure 72–1B.
6. Remove the remote cover when a shift selector is to be reinstalled.
7. Reinstall the original shift selector, using the same anti-static precautions as in Step 1 above, and ECU
support hardware (clip nuts, screws, radio filter).
8. Obtain the Calibration Identification Number (CIN) from one of the sources shown in Figure 72–1A: 72-1
The CIN is shown as callout b on the 2 inch x 4 inch label, the DDR screen ECU Calibration Informa-
tion, or the Service Recalibration Label.
9. Have the ECU calibrated. Consult your Allison distributor or dealer for the nearest ECU Recalibration
Center.

The procedure for finding parts needed to service shift selectors is different from other sections in this catalog.
Information you must provide to your Allison Transmission parts supplier comes from the Shift Selector itself and
Not From the Transmission Nameplate.
When replacing a shift selector attached to an ECU:

1. Separate the shift selector from the ECU by removing 4 slotted Torx® head screws shown in
Figure 72–2A. A static ground must be established during the separation process. Use an anti-static
wristband (Kent-Moore BT8639B, or equivalent) which is available at your Allison service outlet.
Carefully disconnect the ribbon cable connector from the ECU.
2. To order a complete shift selector assembly or a remote module assembly, use the assembly number
recorded on the label. See Figure 72–2A for typical label locations.
3. Reattach the new shift selector to the original ECU, using the same anti-static precautions as in
Step 1 above.
When ordering repair parts for a shift selector:
1. Order pushbutton selector repair parts from Group A (remote) or B (integral with ECU), which follow
Figure 72–2B.
2. Order lever shift selector repair parts from Groups C through H, which follow Figure 72–2B.
When ordering remote selector mounting hardware, refer to Group A or C.
Lever Shift Selector Information
1. Lever Shift Selectors are described by the number of forward range positions, whether the selector lever
is designed for right or left hand operation, and whether Reverse is at the front of the selector or at the
rear. For example, a lever shift selector designated as 6 RH RF means that there are 6 forward range
positions, the selector is designed for Right Hand operation, and Reverse is at the Front of the selector.
2. Be sure to note the position of the lever stops whenever the lever selector is disassembled. Be sure the
lever stops are in the correct position at reassembly. Use the following table to correctly place lever stops.
See Figure 72–2B for pictorial information. The lever stop positions are visible by looking into the lever
housing with the side cover and detent assembly removed.

INTRODUCTION TO WTEC III SHIFT SELECTORS
The procedure for finding parts needed to service shift selectors is different from other sections in this catalog.
Information you must provide to your Allison Transmission parts supplier comes from the Shift Selector itself and
Not From the Transmission Nameplate.
To order a complete shift selector assembly, use the assembly number recorded on the label. See Figure 72–2C
for typical label locations.
When ordering repair parts for a shift selector:

1. Order full-function pushbutton selector repair parts from Groups A through D, which follow
Figure 72–2H.
2. Order strip type pushbutton shift selector repair parts from Groups E through H, which follow
Figure 72–2H.
3. Order lever shift selector repair parts from Groups J through T, which follow Figure 72–2H.
Lever Shift Selector Information

1. Lever Shift Selectors are described by the number of forward range positions, whether the
selector lever is designed for right or left hand operation, and whether Reverse is at the front of
the selector or at the rear. For example, a lever shift selector designated as 6 RH RF means that
there are 6 forward range positions, the selector is designed for Right Hand operation, and
Reverse is at the Front of the selector.
2. Be sure to note the position of the lever stops whenever the lever selector is disassembled. Be
sure the lever stops are in the correct position at reassembly. Use the following table to correctly
place lever stops. See Figure 72–2H for pictorial information. The lever stop positions are
visible by looking into the open side of the selector housing.
