Unit 3 Assignment:
Career Plan Template
Section 1: Creating your BHAG
Following the information in the “Good to Great Connections” PowerPoint presentation and all
of the additional information provided under the Module 4 content area, and taking your Personal
Mission Statement development efforts into consideration, carefully develop your own personal
long term BHAG (***one amazingly HUGE, your world changing goal***). The timeframe for
your BHAG is 10-25 years out, however it will depend upon your age. For example, a 55 year
old person might be closer to the 10 year BHAG, whereas a 30 year old or younger person
should be considering a BHAG 25 years out. This BHAG may be related to your overall
life/lifestyle aspirations, or it could be related to some organizational, protean, or
entrepreneurial vision you have for the future. Dig deep and and go beyond the job. That is up to
you. What it needs to be is BIG! HUGE! REALLY HAIRY! STRETCH YOURSELF! LOOK
BEYOND GRADUATE DEGREE! LOOK BEYOND A JOB! HOW WILL YOU MAKE A
DIFFERENCE IN THIS WORLD???? I RECOMMEND WE MEET TO DISCUSS IT TO
ENSURE ITS HUGENESS.

Answer the following:

1) What is your BHAG (***one amazingly HUGE, your world changing goal***)?

My personal BHAG in the next 20 years is to be able to live comfortably with no

debt, while putting each of my children through school. I would like to be able to relieve
them of the burden of owing any student loans after they have completed their education.

2) Why is this your BHAG?

Along with living a comfortable life, I aspire for my children to get a head start in
their life. After working for so many years I would like to retire and be able to live my
life as comfortable as I please. Being able to do as I please, whether it be traveling the
world or relaxing around the house, I do not want to worry about any debt or outstanding
bills later in my life. After working for so many years, being able to not have to worry
about schedules or paydays is the ultimate goal.

As far as my children go, them living happy and successful lives is another one of
my goals. Raising them to be productive members of society with a firm grip on who
they are as individuals would mean my wife and I were successful. Being able to give
them a head start in life by making sure their education is taken care of would give me

1
Last Update: May 2021
assurance that they will be worry free, for the most part. These small, yet very big, goals
are just a few of the things I hope for my future. Only time will tell if these goals become
a reality.

3) How does your BHAG align with your vision statement from Module 4?

To develop a positive relationship with my family and team.

My BHAG and vision statement align in many ways. In order to create a positive
and loving environment for my family, the hard work must be put in. Developing positive
relationships comes with increased trust and many other benefits. While there are many
obstacles that come with personal and professional relationships, if they can be overcome, all
parties benefit.

4) How does your BHAG align with your mission statement from Module 4?

I am dedicated to creating a positive environment for those around me by facilitating and

encouraging growth in order for other’s and myself to reach our full potential.

Just as my vision statement, my mission statement aligns with my BHAG. It will

take hard work on my end to establish my goals and strive to reach each one over the
years. Making sure I reach my full potential will allow me to fulfill my goal of living a
relaxing retirement lifestyle. Making sure I facilitate growth in my family will also ensure
they make positive choice throughout their lives as well.

5) List your top five (5) obstacles in order from number 5 being least difficult and
number 1 being most difficult you need to overcome in order to obtain your BHAG
and explain the relevance of each one.

1. Choosing the right company to retire with.

With so many companies offering retirement plans and competitive wages, finding
one that has the same core values as I do and allows for me to live my preferred
lifestyle will be the most difficult task.

2. Making the right choices when raising my family

This could have easily been my first answer, but there is no handbook on how to raise
children to be happy and successful. All I can do each and every day is put my best
foot forward and keep their best interests in mind.

3. Making the right financial choices

Debt has hindered me from doing things I wanted to do in the past. As my career
grows, making sound financial choices and setting my family up for the later years is

2
Last Update: May 2021
always in the back of my mind. Whether it be through savings or investments I am
always looking to how I can benefit from financial moves in the future.

4. Putting in the long work hours now in order to benefit later

Stability does not come without hard work and sacrifice. Making sure the hard work
is being done now, while I am young enough, in order for my retirement to be without
stress is a major factor in making that a reality. Climbing the corporate ladder has
been my main professional focus the last few years, and will continue to be for years
to come.

5. Maintaining a strong work/life balance

Completing each of these steps and becoming financially secure without my family
beside me would mean it was all for nothing. Putting in hard work needs to happen,
but not forgetting to treasure the small moments and being present for memories is
the most important thing of all.

Section 2: Career Vision

Consider your long-term vision for your career. Respond to the following questions, and make
connections to your personal mission statement, your BHAG(s), the themes you developed in
Module 4, and the textbook/supplemental readings (as applicable).

Answer the following:

1) Analyze the type of career you want to have, in terms of an organizational career or
a protean career, make sure it is clear you understand the concepts as outlined in
the textbook. Why?

As I continue my push up the corporate ladder I have begun to realize it is exactly

where I want to be. A leadership position that oversees multiple leaders from different
departments or buildings is my ultimate goal. While I know this may involve long hours
or travel I would still prefer to lead a protean career. Having a company that will
accommodate to my lifestyle to an extent and allow for me to lead in the way that I see
best fit for my colleagues. I know there are many companies that have strict rules on how
to talk to and lead other’s, but they do not always allow for the growth of the individual.
Being a positive factor in the growth of another is one of the most rewarding things I can
think of in my current profession.

3
Last Update: May 2021
2) Analyze your career with an explanation as one that moves you up the organization
or one you develop seeking alternative career paths. If you see yourself taking an
alternative career path, which one(s) sound the most likely? Why?

In my current career I would definitely continue up through the organization. I

have been able to find a company that cares about its associates and chamions growth. I
have been able to promote into a supervisor role and have already begun preparing for
my enxt role as an operations manager. A strong piece of encouragement has been the
ability to see many of my peers get promoted into multiple positions of interest. The
ability to promote further and one day oversee an entire warehouse is my ultimate goal.
The ability to have this goal of upper management and know that it is a possibility keeps
me motivated to continue to develop myself as a strong leader.

3) Discuss and explain if you see yourself working an alternative or flexible work
schedule/arrangement? If so, which ones and why?

I do not have very many restricitions on the type of schedule I can work. My
personal life has always had the ability to adjust when needed. If there was an urgent
need for me to work an alternative schedule I would not have a problem accommodating
the arrangement. As my family has grown, I have preferred to work a traditional schedule
that allows me the weekend to spend time with them, but we have been able to make the
most out of weekdays as well. If I continue to promote and move up the corporate ladder
I would assume a less traditional schedule would be needed at times. Travel days,
overtime and emergenices would all accommodate for the alternative scheduling.

Section 3: Long-Term Strategy

Develop a strategy for moving toward your ideal future work/life situation and the realization of
your BHAG(s). Consider the timeframe for your BHAG(s). Provide a vivid description of life
“the way it will be” once your BHAG is realized.

1) Critically think about and then list out (not a narrative format) the interim steps or
milestones you have laid out for yourself that will aid you in reaching your BHAG
(you should have at least 10 to earn a rating of excellent and be referenced by time)

1. Promote to operations manager- 1 year

2. Promote to assistant general manager- 3 years
3. Promote to general manager- 5 years
4. Build investment future- 10-15 years
5. Settle down in final city/town- 15 years

4
Last Update: May 2021
6. First child graduates high school- 15 years
7. Second child graduates high school- 20 years
8. All remaining debts paid- 25 years
9. Retirement begins- 30 years
10. All remaining school debt for children paid- 30 years

2) In addition to career-related roles, consider your other life roles in relation to your
career goals. Revisit your responses to the Identities Exercise that you completed in
Module 1 of the course. Based on your long-term strategy what are the 3 most
precious things you are willing to sacrifice, besides time, to achieve your BHAG?
Why?

1. Time with friends

Besides family, one of the most precious things to me is friendships. I have friends
that I have known nearly my entire life. With the pursuit of professional success
comes the sacrifice of spending as much time with friends as I would like. As long as
there is still communication happening then the time we do get to spend with each
other will mean that much more. Just as I am looking ahead professionally, most of
my friends are doing the same, the mutual understanding we have is also something w
can come together with.

2. Extracirruclar activites
As an avid sports fan one thing I enjoy doing is attending games whenever I get the
chance. In order to save money and due to the necessity of working overtime, I would
be willing to sacrifice these activities. Knowing that by holding off on attending
events or going on vacation I will be setting myself up to do all of that and more is
enough motivation for me.

3. Current or future employment

In order to live a comfortable retirement lifestyle I need to make sure the company I
retire with has the ability to offer me a proper retirement. While working for this
company I need to make sure I am a culture fit and there is room for growth
opportunites. If I happen to land in a role with a company that does not fit any of
these I must sacrifice my employment in search of something better.

Section 4: The one to two year plan

Using a SMART goals-based approach, as well as project planning and management skill best
practices, create a detailed project plan for at least two specific goals. At least one must be
related to your long-term BHAG. The other may be related to some other aspect of your career

5
Last Update: May 2021
development or career-life integration. Both of these goals need to be things that you are
passionate about accomplishing.
Your selected goals and SMART plan (see SMART goal information provided in the module)
should be structured based on a one to two-year timeline. It should include specific milestones,
action items, sub-tasks as well as task-related interdependencies as applicable. With respect to
each goal, critically think about what specifically are the things you will do in the next one to
two years to achieve these goals.

Develop a clear and detailed SMART plan, with facilitating goals and steps/actions required
to accomplish your selected goals. It should be evident, by looking at the format and structure
of your plan, that you have developed some significant skills respect to project management.
Include Gantt charts (T) or other visual project representations as you see fit, and be sure to
address your approach to tracking/measuring your progress (M).

1) What is your #1 Goal? (at least one of the following must be related to your BHAG)

Promote to Operations Manager

a. Promoting from area supervisor to operations manager in the RDC

b. Start a blueprint at work to frame goals and tasks relevant to promotion

c. After promoting to area supervisor, the need for operations managers has
expanded. My experience and success as a supervisor has prepared me for the
next step.

d. In order to continue the growth of my career the operations manager role is the
next in que. It is a stepping stone in order for me to accomplish my larger goals of
becoming a general manager
