neck than the previous generation, accounting for the evolution of the giraffe from being an animal with
a shorter neck and legs, to one seen today with its long neck and legs. Darwin’s theory relied on a
process of natural selection. In his theory, at the start there would have been many giraffes of varying
heights, which would be so due to the variations in organisms through the process of sexual
reproduction.
Darwin stated that all life competes in a struggle to exist. Therefore, during a dry season when there is
not as much nutrition available on lower levels for the shorter giraffes, the giraffe’s that are more likely
to survive are the ones with the longer necks and legs. The giraffes with the shorter necks and legs
would die, disabling them to pass on their genes for the shorter legs and necks, resulting in a new
generation of longer necked and legged giraffes.
This theory is commonly shown through the giraffe’s evolution to having longer legs and a longer neck.
According to Lamarck’s theory, during a bad season when all the vegetation in lower areas (easily
reachable by the giraffe with the shorter neck and legs) had gone, the giraffes were forced to stretch
their necks, to reach for food on a higher level. These giraffes would then have longer necks and would
pass this trait of having a longer neck to their offspring.
“Zoos breed animals in an effort to keep drawing in paying visitors—yet often, there’s nowhere to put
the offspring as they grow. Breeding programs serve no true conservation purpose because giraffes and
other animals born in zoos are rarely, if ever, returned to their natural habitats.” (PETA) In my opinion, I
think all zoos should be closed permanently for the sake of the animals’ freedom. Animals are not
supposed to be paired up and stuck together by what a human thinks is okay for their environment.
For example giraffes have long necks, according to Charles Darwin these giraffes had a common ancestor
who had short necks from time to time a mutation resulted in a giraffe having a long neck. The reason
being is so that, the giraffe could reach the trees better and get extra food and be more prone to stay
alive and reproduce than all of the other giraffes. Eventually, the attribute would be passed down until
generally most giraffes had long necks.
The last park I would like to inform you about is Animal Kingdom. What I love most about this park is the
real live animals. One thing my family and I did ever year was take the Safari Ride. This consists of seeing
and learning about the different kinds of animals such as elephants, giraffes, and rhinos.
In the African savanna, herds of animals graze on the tall grass, and giraffes browse on the trees. Other
tropical savannas are found in South America, India, and Australia. The chaparral biome is dominated by
dense thickets of mostly small-leafed evergreen shrubs. It is characterized by hot, dry summers and cool,
wet winters.
Nowhere in the search at the zoo of life among the lions, giraffe, hippopotamus, monkeys, ape,
elephant, camel, and coati could she find hatred or anger. In fact, she finds it easier to love and to be
compassionate than to hate. This roller coster of emotions in the story starts with a women who has a
struggle but overcomes it with the happy emotion of each animal.
This can be seen in the nursery, where “Animals took shape: yellow giraffes, blue lions, pink antelopes,
lilac panthers cavorting in crystal substance. The walls were glass. They looked out upon color and
fantasy” (Bradbury 78). Children do not even go outside to enjoy nature, but watch it on their
mechanical walls, their lives growing more and more hollow and empty.
For example he proposed the lengthing of the giraffe’s neck was due in part to the trees it lived among.
In order for it to obtain its food it had to crane its neck forward and reach up. Lamarck, believe, over
time, the giraffes structure eventually began to get longer and longer as it was passed from each
genernertaion of offspring.
