Fateh Singh 11
THE 4 VITAL MAKERS OF CHARACTER:

Conscience → Motive → Will → Conduct

CONSCIENCE : MOTIVES:
- Inward Power to Discern - Springs from Conscience

Moral Truths - Move the Will

- Moral Consciousness

- Intuitive Perception

CONDUCT : IDEALS :
- You become what you Love &

CRISIS OF CHARACTER :

“ OVERALL MORAL DECLINE AND WORLDWIDE

CULTURAL SUICIDE “

SYMPTOMS :

16 yr olds
12 yr olds 14 yr killing each Sheer Unethical
pushing old other, lying, unhappine business
drugs having cheating -ss among & govt.
babies and stealing the youth
galore

The Root causes of the above is Lack of Self Control.

Self Control is a Moral Virtue.

Promiscuity Adolescent Drug Crime and Teen

Suicides abuse Violence Pregnancy

Fateh Singh 13
QUOTES :

1. “ To educate a man in mind and not morals is to educate a

menace to society “ – Roosevelt

2. “ Is there no virtue among us? If there be not, we are in a

wretched situation. No theoretical checks , no form of
government, can render us secure.”

3. “ To suppose that any form of government will secure liberty or

happiness without any virtue in the people is a chimerical idea.”

Fateh Singh 14
VIEWS, VALUES & VIRTUES :

• Views and Values are Passive.

• Views are Intellectual Positions.
• Values are Subjective.
• Neither promise a Fulfilled Worthwhile Existence.
• Virtues on the other hand are Active and Promise a
Fulfilled Existence.

Fateh Singh 15
PROBLEMS OF VIEWS :

TYPICAL POP CULTURE TV DEBATES :

1. Find a Hot issue.

2. Present it Dramatically.
3. Get people to formulate their views and take positions.
4. Make them present their views in a confrontational manner.
5. Anchor STAYS NEUTRAL- EXCEPT WHEN SHE ‘BELIEVES’ HER
VIEW IS CORRECT | SHE STAYS 'NON JUDGEMENTAL’
EXCEPT WHEN VIEWS COUNTER MAINSTREAM THOUGHT.
6. Congratulate People for their interest and participation- NOT
FOR THE MERIT OR TRUTH OF THEIR POSITIONS.

Viewers are left with the impression that ethical issues are
too complicated & finally...

“Just a matter of opinion”

Fateh Singh 16
PROBLEMS OF VALUES :

Values = What we Desire, What we Want,

and What we Ascribe to
- Idiosyncratic and RELATIVE- maybe yes, maybe no- ‘ All depends’.
- Your own inner world of subjective feelings.
- Everything is relative- No Moral Principles, No Universal Good to
count on.
- Individual is king out here- Whatever I do is MY Choice! I am my
own Private Judge.
- Depends on my Taste and my Feeling.
- Depends on Religion and Ethnicity.

ISSUE IS SUBJECTIVE PRIVATISM.

- “I will define my own Values!!”

- “I feel strongly about this. Therefore it is True!”

MANIPULATION may be your own main Value.

- No DELIBERATE CHOICE involved.

- No Hard, Intellectual Evidence which grounds one in the Truths
of Society's Collective Moral Wisdom.
- No Moral Basics.
- No promise of Leading a Good Life.

Fateh Singh 17
ETERNAL RELEVANCE &
IMPORTANCE OF VIRTUES :

Vir ( Latin Word) meaning Force or Agency I.e. Virtue.

HABITS IN ACTION that lead to MATURE CONDUCT which leads

to an Honourable, Well lived Life.

VIRTUE :

-Is NOT ‘Values’- Your Personal Values and Empathy is hollow if

you can’t discern what ‘Good’ is.
- Is NOT ‘Views’.

• Virtue Springs from IDEALS & DISCERNMENT.

• For Discernment, one needs to Tackle these Fundamental

questions first (which aren’t tackled)

- “ Purpose of Human Life?”

- “ Happiness? ”
- “ Living Well? ”
- “ What is the meaning of Hero? ”

Fateh Singh 18
BASIC TRUTHS ALSO NEED TO BE
APPRECIATED SUCH AS :
• Success is not Fame or Money.

• Wealth & Character aren’t the same.

• Energy, Time, Talents, Interests, Strengths- all should must be used

to attain what is Truly GOOD.

• 'Good’ must be discerned first.

• One must be able to Think, Feel , Act in MORALLY EXCELLENT

ways.

• Goal is to work towards a Noble Purpose and be Fully Human- to

Finally Lead a Life of Excellence.

VIRTUE BENEFITS :

Better Better
Parents Teachers

Better Better
Friends Students

Better Better
Spouses Sons

Fateh Singh 19
WHY BUILD CHARACTER ?

- Character = Individual Destiny + Nation’s Destiny.

- Any Democracy demands VIRTUOUS People- so that Right, Just
Decisions are taken.

It is even More Critical in this Age characterised by :

- Abundant Softness
- Moral Relativism
- Ethical Anaesthesia

• Men have an inner Need to Live a Fundamentally Human,

Individually Fulfilling yet a Worthwhile Life.

Fateh Singh 20
QUOTES :

1. “ The ideal of all education, all training, should be this man-

making. But, instead of that, we are always trying to polish
up the outside. What use in polishing up the outside when
there is no inside? The end and aim of all training is to make
the man grow. The man who influences, who throws his
magic, as it were, upon his fellow-beings, is a dynamo of
power, and when that man is ready, he can do anything and
everything he likes; that personality put upon anything will
make it work.”

2.“ Nothing can be more important at the beginning of a practical

course in the building of character than a firm resolution to look
for the light within and try to obey it when it is recognized, even in
the face of grave difficulty. “

3. “ A citizenry without character leads to two inevitable

alternatives : Social chaos or a policeman at every corner. “

THE DEGENERACY…

• “ In 1950, the overall death rate for suicide per 100,000 residents
was 13.2 and in 2015 was reported to be 13.3. More specifically,
the state of Wyoming had the highest suicide rate in the U.S. in
2015 with 28.2 suicides per 100,000 residents. Wyoming was
followed by Alaska with 26.8 and Montana with 25.3. “

• “ The global rate of disorder, which the World Health

Organization defines as a “persistent sadness and a loss of interest
in activities that people normally enjoy, accompanied by an
inability to carry out daily activities for two weeks or more,” has
risen by more than 18% since 2005, according to the agency. “

Fateh Singh 28
ACTION POINTS :

• Don't be a Degenerate - From the time you were born, forces

were AGAINST YOU. If you haven't consciously fought
against these forces, CHANCES are your Character is already
poisoned (unless you were blessed with involved, discerning
parents/teachers or had suitable Role Models to seek constant
Guidance from.

• Understand how your Character (thinking, beliefs, inner

attitudes, outer behaviour etc.) has been and continues to be
influenced by External Forces.

• Fill your Mind with the Correct perceptions and ideas to

escape Degeneracy.

To Dominate (in one’s field) with a Discerning Intellect is a Man’s Goal.

Without Discernment , he turns into a Cruel Dictator.
Pick & Choose Virtues, Develop those which most appeal to you.
Fateh Singh 30
ACTIONABLE ADVICE :

Actionable Advice :
1. Discernment is Top Priority - Read Excellent Books + Talk to Wise
Men
Discernment means Informed Intelligence - in the Sphere of
Human Action . It is Built on Personal Experience in Growing up.
You must Draw Heavily upon the accumulated wisdom of Mankind
(It finds expression in the form of Sayings, Lessons, Stories,
Proverbs, Parables, Principles.)

2. Try to Achieve a 'Well Rounded’ Manhood for a fulfilling Life

E.g. Too much Determination CAN LEAD to Cruelty
Too much Bravery CAN LEAD to Stupidity
Too much Truth CAN LEAD to Awkwardness

Cultivate Discernment first. So these virtues can be tempered &

Sharpened by the addition of other virtues.

3. Find an Occupation that matches your Inner Virtues

E.g. If Truth is your Driving Virtue- Scientist , Teacher and/or

magistrate
