Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Plants and animals

Grade Level(s)/Content Area: 1st grade
Content Standard Addressed: S1L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about
the basic needs of plants and animals.

1. Ask questions to compare and contrast the basic needs of plants (air, water, light, and

nutrients) and animals (air, water, food, and shelter).

Technology Standard Addressed: ISTE Educator Standard 7B: Educators will use technology to design and
implement a variety of formative and summative assessments that accommodate learner needs, provide
timely feedback to students, and inform instruction.

Overarching Question: What can you infer about the needs of plants and animals?

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☒ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☐ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☐ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☐ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☐ Teacher-Paced ☒ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy Level(s):
☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding ☒ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating
Levels of Technology Integration:
☐ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☒ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity:

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):

Student Response and Assessment Tools
☐ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

Students will complete the Kahoot quiz. The teacher will observe the students and make sure that each
student is making their own personal choice. Students will have extra time for questions if they need it. An
iPad or computer is needed for each student to complete the quiz.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☒ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (7-10). If you
cannot provide one or two critical thinking questions in your assessment, please list a question or two you
would want students to provide an open response to below. Use your Bloom’s terms to design the
question(s):

I could not add any type in answer questions to Kahoot without paying to upgrade my account. One question I
would include would be to ask students how they would make sure a plant and animal had everything it
needed to survive. As well, to describe how they would take care of a plant at home.

Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity? How will the data be used?

The data will be used to see what I need to correct before the end of the unit summative assessment. This
tool will be used after our lesson to conclude if students can apply their knowledge of the lesson in a
formative manner. This formative assessment will be used as a “Pass or fail” grade that I will keep
personally to use as data for the summative assessment on plants and animals in the future. I plan to use
many mini formative assessments as a way for my students to apply their knowledge instead of one large
summative assessment. I will use this data to differentiate instruction for this topic. For example, if 5 of the
students did not do well on this quiz I will differentiate the future lessons on plants and animals for them. I
might include different activities and more one on one instruction with them.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

I am hoping that this activity gives students insight to plants and animals and how they can identify and
analyze what their needs are. This is a very important lesson because many students have animals and plants
in their home and it’s something they can go home and apply their knowledge to.

Reflective Practice:

I think this a very hands on lesson that will impact the students learning in a positive way. This content
standard can be very relatable and easy to incorporate kinesthetic learning into the mic=x. I hope that the

way I designed this lesson teaches students to go home and apply their knowledge to their own personal
plants and animals. One way to extend this lesson is to ask students to go home and take care of a plant or
animal and us their own personal data to share with the class what they have learned. Another technology
tool that would further enhance this project is FlipGrid. Students can share their own personal experiences
with identifying a plant or animals need at home and share it with the class via Flipgrid.
