I. INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the study

Social media plays a big role in communication and socializing especially in teenagers.

Nowadays social media is the best way to communicate with others. According to a

study, social media are computer tools that allows people to share or exchange

informations, ideas, images, videos and even with each other through a particular

network. On this generation, social networking sites are so popular, so it probably

results to a great impact in teenagers social life.

According to Dr. Catherine Steine-Adair, a clinical psychologist and author of The Big

Disconnect, there's no question kids are missing out on very critical social skills. In a

way, texting and online communicating, it's not like it creates a nonverbal learning

disability, but it puts disabled context, where body langguage, facial expression, and

even the most smallest kinds of vocal reactions are rendered invisible. Moreover,

according to a survey conducted by the Royal Society for Public Health with the 14-24

year olds respondents in United Kingdom, how social media affects their social life,

found that Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram all led to increased feelings of

depression, anxiety and loneliness.

In addition, social networking sites is very essential in a way that it helps the teenagers

stay connected with each others regardless their distance, ut helps them to get some

advice and informations online and it allows the teens to find support to their fellow

netizens that they may lack in traditional relationships. However, social media also have

a negative impact on the way how the teenagers socialize like old days, where social

media is not yet invented, the interaction with others were so real, you can see their

reacton, facial expression and emotions with your eyes not hidden in front of their

screens.

(1) In the book, 'How To In Friends and Influence Peers' written by Dale Carnegie

in 1936. It contains their 30 related terms to Human Relations Principles,

which shows fundamental techniques in handling people including ways to

make people like us and how to win people to our way of thinking. Also, it says

in the book that people love to talk about themselves, as a result social media

is a great way to promote ourselves, it's not people we want to engage in but

instead - their attention. That book also, states that social media serves as a

gateway for engaging adolescents for being a 'selfcentered' one. For

Carnegie's evidence he interviewed some people that are exposed in social

media; actors, politicians, students, etc. and have conducted a telephone

study which received that in 500 telephone conversations the word 'I' was used

3900 times.

(2) According to , some people try social media to avoid the inconvenience of

face-to-face conversation; others dabble in social media because they see a

new opportunity to pitch their business to more people without the

embarrassment of facing rejection. Through all this, we have to engage with

real people – and engage with them effectively. John D Rockefeller founded

Standard Oil, As a great philanthropist, he gave away much of his wealth.

Rockefeller said, ‘The ability to deal with people is as purchasable a

commodity as sugar or coffee and I will pay more for that ability than for any

other under the sun.’ The said situations are the reasons why most of the

teenagers uses social media over physical interactions and for a

philanthropist - Rockefeller, he prefers dealing with people personally but

some are hard to kept in touch because they want something in return.

(1) As stated in the book of Marcus Santos, Impending danger in the

background is only one type of emotional context in which to take a selfie.

Other emotionally salient contexts are also common. Numerous teenagers

have been criticized in the press for taking selfies at sombre sites such as

the tribal concentration camp in Baguio or the memorial at the site of Baguio.

The fact that some cases that is intended for public outcry shouldn't be

recorded because it may lead to such great level of tension to person been

captured, yet they continually doing it on purpose. According to Facebook’s

terms and conditions of usage, the only way you could have prevented this

happening was to delete the precious selfie from Facebook.

(2) With the internet age came this faster and more direct form of direction, and

we adapted it. Nobody has the time, strength or patience to write or read

long letters. Yet, it wasn't necessarily a bad thing because now, you can get

and respond to the messages that was sent by your friends immediately. For

adolescents, using media is very handful because of those things that why

they prefer communicating via social media: text messages, messenger,

calls, etc. According to a study, social media lets you do a lot more than just

exchange status updates, but that’s the most common activity and the

reason most of us do the social media thing. Communications to and from all

your friends, all in one place, all done from your personal computer or

smartphone or tablet. It’s like communications central for everyone you

know—close friends or otherwise. This study proves that the younger people

are prone from cybercrimes: such as bullying through internet and lessens

the privacy that they should possess as youngsters. Why they are prone

from such things? Because at their stage, they still couldn't handle

themselves alone so they need the help and guidance from an adult.

(1) According to the researchers from U.S, The effects of social media use on

teenage life satisfaction are limited and probably "tiny”. Their study concluded that most

links between life satisfaction and social media use were "trivial", accounting for less than

1% of a teenager's wellbeing - and that the effect of social media was "not a one-way

street". The survey finds that that teenagers gets satisfaction of expressing themselves

freely in social media. However, some respondents said that it affects them negatively, yet

they still continually using it.

(2) As stated in a survey, social media has made young people more depressed.

Use of the smartphones as social media is a potential cause of mental

distress. In 2017, the number of teens reporting mental health concerns after

using smartphones and social media increased to 39%, up from 24% in

2013. A similar increase was seen in teens using health services. In the

years between 2010 and 2014, there was a substantial increase in children

and teens hospitalized for mental health issues, with a 110% increase in

hospitalizations for self-harm for Canadian teen girls seen between 2010 and

2014. It was clearly stated that during this time frame the percentage of the

teenagers that is going through a rough time because of too much exposure

in social media is rapidly increasing.

(3) “The technology isn’t the problem, we’re the problem,” Dr. Rich said. “It’s the

interactivity that draws some kids in.” At Boston Children’s Hospital’s Clinic

for Interactive Media and Internet Disorders, he said, they are seeing four

manifestations of what they call problematic interactive media use, including

gaming (mostly boys), and social media (mostly girls). And then there is

pornography, “which is touching kids younger and more profoundly than

anyone imagines,” he said. And finally there is “information bingeing,” with

kids “disappearing down a rabbit warren of hot links.” Internet is build widely

with some sites that are helpful. It can help us in our works or even our study

but some are not using the social media appropriately.

(1) Base on the article published by CJ Marquez, CNN Philippines on June

29,2019 entitled Youth Vital in the evolution social, Rosario Juan says

that it is the youth who will play a major part in the promotion of social

media, thus youngsters were probably one of the most involve person

when we talk about the social life, that's why they're also prone to the

effects of social media either in positive or negative outcome.

(2) In mid-May, a report in a survey suicide rates among those aged 10 to 19

over the period from 1975 to 2016; boys have traditionally had higher

suicide rates, but the gap has narrowed as rates rose among adolescent

girls, with the largest percentage increases among girls aged 10 to 14.

The study was accompanied by an editorial calling the role of social

media use among adolescents “an urgent public health issue that merits
further investigation.” This proves that adolescent girls are more prone

for anxiety and depression because they are the ones whose much

exposed in social networks.

(3) A study published in January 2019 has established a link between

excessive social media consumption and teenage depression. According

to the article, the main problem is not with the social networks

themselves, but rather the manner in which they are used, according to

their study, published Tuesday, Aug. 13, in DepEd & DOH which

surveyed 12,866 adolescents aged 13 to 16.The participants were

interrogated on the frequency of social network usage, with checking

one’s phone over three times qualified as “very frequent” usage by the

researchers. These indications did not, however, take into account

connections from a computer. Teens are exposed to social media but

they forgot to limit themselves on how they should use social media

wisely and carefully. It also proves that social media itself is not very

harmful, the often use to it like it is some kind of addicting drugs may

have a negative impact to your mental health. Source: studies.

(1) Experts advise avoiding screens or watching television for at least one

hour before you sleep. And a European study found that teens who were

on screens (exposed to blue light) more than four hours a day took 30

minutes longer each night to fall asleep and showed more signs of
tiredness during waking hours. But it may go well beyond just needing a

blue-light filter. The National Sleep Foundation shows that our retinas

sense light and dark, signaling to our brain times of awakeness and

sleep. Considering how much time is spent on Chromebooks and other

computer technology during the school day and for homework that light

exposure time ramps up quickly. According to the experts, we should get

some rest put down our cellphone, gadgets or anything that radiates

radiation because it may affect our sight and even our way of thinking.

(2) On the basis of the research did by Pew Research Center (PRC), roughly

half of teens say they post about their accomplishments on social media,

while 44% say they post about their family. Around one-third (34%) say

they share things related to their emotions and feelings on these sites,

while 22% report posting about their dating life. Relatively few teens –

around one-in-ten – say they share things related to their personal

problems or their religious or political beliefs on social media. To sum it

up, having smartphones as social media plays a big role of teenagers

because the ability to share different affects of their lives. Also this survey

finds that many of these youngsters posts selfie, videos and other kind of

updates posted on their social media.

(3) As stated in the study of Child Mind Institute, Young people report that

there might be good reason to worry. A survey conducted by the Royal

Society for Public Health asked 14-24 year olds in the UK how social
media platforms impacted their health and wellbeing. The survey results

found that Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram all led to

increased feelings of depression, anxiety, poor body image and

loneliness. Teens are masters at keeping themselves occupied with the

indirect communication which is through screen not face-to-face. They

are most likely to post something in instagram, facebook, twitter etc. than

hanging out in malls and talk with each other. Teens are missing out the

the real time interaction with their friends that is so much fun. They spent

time scrolling and looking at the screens of their cellphones and avoiding

physical interaction with people.

(1) On the basis of the study that was conducted by DeLa Salle University -

Manila, social media seem to be the hindrance for youngsters to talk to

their parents personally. They feel much comfortable around social

media than opening up to their parents. That's why as stated, parents

nowadays do not know the interests of their children unless it was posted

on social media. However, comprising social networking sites such as

Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, videos from youtube and blogging sites

may play a great role in broadening the social connection and enriching

technical skills of adolescents. "Power to the people - wave 3 ," it has

been found out that Philippines was the top among other countries with

83.1% Filipinos belonging to social networking sites and it was also the

Filipinos who became top users who frequently share videos and photos

to their social media sites. Apparently, after finding out these research
findings, it is very alarming that many Filipino youth are used to

communication through the screen of their mobile phones than having

face-to-face communication and physical interaction with their friends.

(2) Due to the excessive use of social media, many of the youngsters often

neglect other aspects of their lives such as their academic life and time

with their friends and family. Even if the important people in life of that

person is nearby, millennials nowadays still prefer to keep them in-touch

via text message. Thus, according to Booth (2013) a professor at

University of Chicago, the interpersonal relationships we have with other

people already starts to lessens and diminish because of social media.

According to Philippines Basic Education, their findings one of three

teenagers are therefore much aware that is problem is already existing.

Yet, they still don't regulate the usage of their social media sites. On the

other hand, survey findings from PBE says that more teens are saying

that social media has a positive impact to their lives rather than a

negative effect to what they feel: 21% because they became much more

popular and has gained friends, 20% social media boosts their self -

esteem. Due to too much exposure from social networking sites, the

survey says that the cases on cybercrime like bullying increases. More

than one in 10 teens (45 percent) say that they have "ever" been

cyberbullied and (13 percent) say that they have "never" been

cyberbullied.
(3) On the basis of the study that is made by Foundation for Media

Alternatives, Social media serves as the Internet to majority of Filipino

online users. Over 80% of the Philippine Internet population uses social

media. In Universal McCann’s 2008 Wave 3 study on social media, the

Philippines has the highest penetration of social networking among

Internet users at 83%, compared with the global average of 58%. Among

the available social media platforms, Filipino online users prefer using

Facebook over Twitter, Tumbler, Pinterest among others, with 92%

having profile and with women as the most active users. Teens are

immersed with their smartphones as their social media, the affected

situations are things changed when social media comes in. The manner

of how they use social media makes it more complicated because some

are invading someone's privacy, especially with girls. The multiple

platforms for posting and reposting information in social media make it

hard to control and regulate the personal data women want to share. Viral

circulation of private pictures and videos is a common problem in social

media. However, the KII targets lawyers whose works include handling

cases involving privacy issues in the advent of information and

communications technology, a case involving the use of ICT or

specializing on privacy. KII with lawyers covers legal perspectives of

privacy in the Philippines and their limitations when applied in social

media.

III. CONCLUSION

There could be no doubt that social media plays a big role in the way how the teenagers socialize.

Social media use is very essential in how teens make new friends, know more about

someone, to be updates in the news, and to communicate to their love ones. Meanwhile,

some people say that social media changes the way how teenagers socialize negatively

such as, it lessens their confident, it causes them to be anxious for themselves,

depression, they've been cyberbullied and other negative effects. However, in our

research we've found out that social media also gives positivity to our teen netizens, they

said that social media help then to be more sociable and they got more friends through

social media than before. Somehow after all those changes there are still respondents

that says social media doesn't affect the way they socialize, some says they still prefer

talking with someone in person than texting and also they still don't trust someone whom

theyve just met in internet. Social media really got a great impact in the way how teenagers

socialize nowadays, however it makes communicating easier, parent should also monitor

their children in their social life to prevent such negative outcomes.
