he melody “Wachet Auf” (Sleepers, Wake), which is not a creation of Bach’s,

was used by him in three of the seven movements of his Cantata No. 141. The
melody is used in the Prelude (a term taken from the phrase “chorale prelude”)
and Gloria, which are the third and last movements of the Cantata. The Prelude’s

countermelody has become one of Bach’s most well-known compositions.

For this arrangement, certain material has been added to the original to better suit

today’s ensembles. In its original form, the Gloria is simply a melody and figured
bass. Here, the harmonies have been realized and contrapuntal lines added. An
introduction has also been added, as well as a finale for the Gloria.
