IDEA FOR THOUGHT AND STUDY

1. Are changes in the life of nation inevitable?

Practically, changes in the life of the nation is unavoidable seeing that man would
never be satisfied. It is elaborated in chapter 1, different nations have encountered
challenges to deal and opportunities to use as strength. For me, It is either to satisfy the
needs/wants of the citizen or to abolish ideals that is inconvenient and inhumane. Observing
the present era, these circumstances are recurrently happening. It is common in science;
invention of new products to ease human lifestyle. Changes are present to make sure that
the world/ society that we are living in would suit our needs.
Unpredictable events or phenomena , especially unfortunate ones, keep changes
constant in our society. For example, this CoViD-19 forces us to adjust our accustomed
lifestyle because of the restrictions for its prevention and protection of our health.

2. Why is nationalism a desirable goal?

It is explained in the chapter that nationalism is a feeling of oneness by a group of
people. When a people become aware that they are different, they became proud of their
group. Applying it to a nation, for example, It is important for a single citizen to have a sense
of having an identity for them to feel that they belong. In my opinion, if a person met
another person in a different group, he/she will instinctively show pride because we are like
any other animals. We love to boast that we are “mas angat” than others. This is a desirable
goal because it will create cooperation within the nation to find ways how to “angat”
themselves. Speaking with cooperation, Nationalism may also strengthen the identity of the
nation and its people because there is the sense of oneness.

3. According to the Preamble of the Philippine Constitution, The Filipinos must enjoy the
blessings of democracy. What is being done to give substance to this goal?
Our nation has engaged to humanitarian adaptation in its society, laws, and other
ideals. For example, there are laws that details the importance and the rights of EVERY
Filipino’s life. We can also take note the importance of privacy and the right of man on his or
her property. In other words, we are guarded by the law so that no one could intervene your
lifestyle, as well as, you can not intervene others. That Is important so we could enjoy the
blessings of democracy, “As long as its Legal”.

4. Why is industrialism a continuing concern of society?

Whether we like it or not, we could never stop the continuing [advancement] of
industrialism. Almost all aspects of society depend on industrialism. For medicine,
industrialism is important in its production and mainly in advancement as not all diseases
have cure. For food industry, mass production must be needed to feed large and increasing
population. For technology, it is important to create inventions that would help individuals
ease their life. These examples are mostly positive, but there is also concerning issues. For
businesses, they have to deal with the employment relations as machines starting to take
over works for faster and mass production. In addition to that, politics must be present in
this issue to make sure the unemployment rate will not increase, or else it would create
problem and eventually inflation. There are a lot of other circumstances that our society
should look upon in the context of industrialism.
5. Do you agree with Rizal’s view that the pursuit of science is an ideal of man?
Science has a huge role in satisfying every man’s curiousity. With the use of scientific
knowledge [method], almost every fact can be attainable. It is ideal to a man to pursue
science as it develops knowledge. Scientific knowledge can be used and applied in affairs
that will definitely enhance our way of living. In simpler words, man are lazy that we need to
find ways to help the world, itself, to suit our laziness.

6. What is your stand on imperialism?

Imperialism, for me, sound quite terrifying as it needs power and people to acquire
its ideals. Moreover, we, Filipinos, have experienced it a lot of times and as we have
accounted, it always comes with war and chaos. Maybe if I lived in the old era, I would love
to expand my territory for resources, because population that time is not as many as today.
There would be available unowned raw products. However, if we would bring that ideology
to the present, it would be dreadful as we will fight over a lot of people. Not only we would
be worrying if we will be successful or not, we should also take note the usage of own
resources. Also remember, a lot of countries manage to take over it, despite slow [even
without] advancement, like the Philippines. Therefore, imperialism is just a declaration of
war.

7. Do you agree with Rizal’s prophetic view that the advancement and moral progress of
the Philippines was inevitable?
If we go back to the inevitableness of change in nation, it will be accurate to the
prophetic view of Rizal. As we have mentioned earlier, there is a constant change due to
man’s desire to to satisfy the his/her needs/wants to abolish ideals that is inconvenient and
inhumane. Just like any other countries, The Philippines will also undergo progress as it
continue to experience these desires.
The publication of Rizal’s two novels opened the eyes of the Philippines. It helped
them [us Filipinos] realized what inhumane ideals that we need to correct. Maybe some of
the people turned to a blind eye, but there will always be a desire especially if life is at stake.
