CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION TO MANAGEMENT OF
WORKPLACE DIVERSITY
Exercise 1
= As it states that when organizations actively assess their handling of workplace diversity
issues, develop and implement diversity plans, multiple benefits are reported. Then for benefits
there is the Attract and Retain Talent, wherein that talent can add a competitive edge to any
organization. Like feeling included and appreciated increases loyalty and feeling of belonging.
Language skills pool is increased and propels organization forward to increase its diverse customer
base. Then there is also the More Effective Execution wherein, companies that encourage diversity
in the workplace inspire all of their employees to perform to their highest ability resulting in higher
productivity, profit, and return on investment.
4. What is the basic concept behind the radical view of diversity? Why is it challenge?
= It states that the radical approach to promoting equal opportunities was adopted by
individuals who held strong political and ethical values and recognized the historical disadvantage
that certain groups, such as women, ethnic minorities and disabled persons, experienced in
employment. In my opinion it is challenging because it requires many changes and understanding for
the radical view of diversity.
5. What are some changes taking place in organizations that may call for better consideration
regarding diversity?
= In my opinion I can think of some changes that are taking place in organizations regarding
diversity. I think sometimes us humans make decisions based on biases, rather than on facts and
logic. Sadly, this is no different in the workplace employees will base their decisions and judgements
on unconscious biases despite their best intentions. And I think hiring employees need to be able to
recognize the signs of hostility. Diversity training for employees can also help to educate them and
mitigate any bias. With awareness training, employees will understand that differences between
colleagues are beneficial and nothing to fret about.
