Multi-User EV Charging Systems: Charging System, Should Consider Several Key Factors
Condominiums Boards and Property Managers who are contemplating an Electric Vehicle
Charging System, should consider several key factors.
Limited Power - There is a limited number of EV charging stations that your Condominium can
support. It would be best to share the available power, considering the average EV driver does
not need more then 4-6 hours of daily charge time.
Cost of Infrastructure - Even though a multi-user system will add value to the entire Condo, not
just those looking to charge, some owners may have an issue paying for infrastructure that they
do not intend to use.
Monitoring & Billing - How will the Condo effectively manage, monitor, and bill users for
energy consumption without it becoming a burden for the PM and Corporation.
The solution is The Evolute; a Smart Multi-User EV Charging System that incorporates load
management, multi-metering, and a user-friendly interface. Once the infrastructure is in place,
your Condo will be able to accommodate immediate and future EV charging requests.
Limited Power - Load Management will allow twice as many EV charging stations,
essentially doubling your EV charging capacity for future expansion options.
Cost of Infrastructure - Only those tapping into the system will pay for it. The cost of a 20-person
system is $28,000.00, each owner will pay $1,400 to be part of the system.
Monitoring & Billing - The Smart metering system will track each owners’ usage and
automatically bill on behalf of the Corporation.
EVdirect along with Eaton Canada developed Evolute to help standardise EV charging deployment
in condominiums, simplifying the process for Boards, Property Managers, and owners alike. Our
partnership with Eaton together with our innovative technology has made Evolute the preferred
solution for new construction and retrofit applications.
EVOLUTE vs Networked Charging Stations
Other multi-user EV charging solutions put the "brains" of the system in the networked charging
station, this is limiting in several ways.
Wi-Fi – Networked stations rely on Wi-Fi for communication, the Condo will need to pay
to boost the signal in the garage for the EV Infrastructure to operate. If the Wi-Fi signal
is down or lagging, owners will not be able to charge their vehicles properly. Evolute relies
on its hard-wired data line which has a much lower interruption frequency, if any.
Charging Stations – Networked solutions that are OCPP compliant require owners to
purchase expensive charging equipment and often limit them to a single brand. Evolute
is compatible with all level 2 charging stations as well as all 208v NEMA receptacles. This
economical alternative is perfect for new developments and satisfies municipal,
provincial and national by-laws and standards.
Capacity - Networked alternatives allow for 16 x 40A charging stations per system. Evolute
allows up to 20 x 40A stations. This will lower the infrastructure cost per user, and your
Condo will be able to accommodate 25% more charging stations for the same required
power.
Contracts & Fees - Networked stations lock owners into lengthy contracts with revenue sharing
and monthly fees. There are no contracts with Evolute and the data is accessible to
administrators and third-party billing companies at no extra cost.
