Tutorial 1

1. Explain how the following circuit can perform a constant current source.

Source: http://www.ti.com/lit/ds/slvs044x/slvs044x.pdf

Solution:

Since V+ = V-, V+ = Vout. As Vout = Vadj + 1.25, the output current = (Vout – Vadj)
/ R1 = 1.25 / R1.

2. An electromagnetic energy harvester has open-circuit voltage Voc , output resistance R,

and output inductance L. If the excitation frequency is f, discuss
(a) the required load characteristics in order to extract maximum power from the
harvester,
(b) the maximum extractable power from the harvester, and
(c) why passive load cannot extract maximum power at any excitation frequency.

Solution:

(a) The load should be of capacitive in order to cancel the effect of the output inductance
L. That is, 2 p f L = 1 / (2 p f) C. Thus, C = 1 / (4 p 2 f2 L).

(b) Since the reactance is canceled, only the resistance is considered. Thus, the maximum
extractable power is (Voc2) / (4 R).

(c) As depicted in the answer of part (a), the value of C is frequency dependent. Hence, a
passive component cannot be used to match at any excitation frequency.

3. An AC/DC converter is supplied by a pure sinusoidal voltage source v(t ) . Its input
current i (t ) contains infinite current harmonics. v(t ) and i (t ) are expressed as the
following Fourier series

v(t ) = Vm ,1 cos (w t ) V
¥
i (t ) = å I m ,n cos (n w t - jn ) A
n =1

Determine the input power factor.

Solution:
1 T
Input power = ∫ v(t)i(t)dt
T 0
$
=  𝑉  𝐼  𝑐𝑜𝑠   𝜑$
% ($ ($

Please be noted that only components with v and I being the same frequencies will exist. For
example, components v and i at frequency w exist. The rest is zero.

$ $
𝑉.(/   =    𝑉($ and 𝐼.(/   =     2𝐼($ %   +   𝐼(4 %   +   𝐼(5 % + …

Thus, the power factor PF

PF  =    =   𝑐𝑜𝑠   𝜑$
