CANCER
In the present world a disease has been creating havoc amongst
the people. This killer disease is called cancer. Cancer is not curable. The
history of cancer is dated back to 1600BC in the Egyptian civilization.
The first thing that hits the mind is “what actually cancer is?” Cancer in
medical terms is called malignant neoplasia. In cancer, cell divides and
grows uncontrollably, forming malignant tumors, which may invade
nearby parts of the body. The cancer may also spread to more distant
parts of the body through the Lakh

lymphatic or blood system. Lakh

Not all tumors are cancerous; Lakh

Lakh
benign do not invade Lakh

neighboring tissues and do Lakh

not spread throughout the Lakh

body. According to the latest Lakh

World Cancer Report from Lakh

t h e Wo r l d H e a l t h Lakh

Organisation (WHO), more

women in India are being
newly diagnosed with cancer annually. As against 4.77 lakh men, 5.37
lakh women were diagnosed with cancer in India in 2012. In terms of
cancer deaths, the mortality rate among men and women in India is
almost the same. While 3.56 lakh men died of cancer in 2012 in India, the
corresponding number for women was 3.26 lakh. There are over 200
different known cancers that affect humans.
CANCER TYPES
Cancer types can be grouped into broader categories. The main
categories of cancer include:
• Carcinoma - cancer that begins in the skin or in tissues that line or
cover internal organs. There are a number of subtypes of carcinoma,
including adenocarcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell
carcinoma, and transitional cell carcinoma.
• Sarcoma - cancer that begins in bone, cartilage, fat, muscle, blood
vessels, or other connective or supportive tissue.

6 Saaol Times April, 2014

• Leukemia - cancer that starts in blood-forming tissue such as the bone
marrow and causes large numbers of abnormal blood cells to be
produced and enter the blood.
• Lymphoma and myeloma - cancers that begin in the cells of the
immune system.
• Central nervous system cancers - cancers that begin in the tissues of
the brain and spinal cord.
ORIGIN OF CANCER
All cancers begin in cells, the body's basic unit of life. To
understand cancer, it's helpful to know
what happens when normal cells become
cancer cells. The body is made up of
many types of cells. These cells grow and
divide in a controlled way to produce
more cells as they are needed to keep the
body healthy. When cells become old or
damaged, they die and are replaced with
new cells. However, sometimes this
orderly process goes wrong. The genetic
material (DNA) of a cell can become
damaged or changed, producing
mutations that affect normal cell growth and division. When this
happens, cells do not die when they should and new cells form when the
body does not need them. The extra cells may form a mass of tissue called
a tumor.
TUMORS
Not all tumors are cancerous; tumors can be benign or malignant.
• Benign tumors aren't
cancerous. They can
often be removed,
and, in most cases,
they do not come
back. Cells in benign
tumors do not spread
to other parts of the
Saaol Times April, 2014 7
body.
• Malignant tumors are cancerous. Cells in these tumors can invade
nearby tissues and spread to other parts of the body. The spread of
cancer from one part of the body to another is called metastasis.
Some cancers do not form tumors. For example, leukemia is a cancer of
the bone marrow and blood.
MOST COMMON CANCER IN INDIA:
Lung and oral cancer are the most common types of cancers
among men, where as cervical and breast cancer among women in India.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS:
Cancer symptoms are changes in the
body caused by the presence of cancer.
Typical symptoms of cancer include:
presence of an unusual lump in the body,
changes in a mole on the skin, persistent
cough or hoarseness, change in bowel
habits, such as unusual diarrohea or
constipation, difficulty in swallowing or
continuing indigestion, any abdominal bleeding, including bleeding
from the vagina, or blood in urine or faeces, persistent sore or ulcer,
difficulty passing urine, unexplained weight loss, pain, tiredness or
fatigue, skin changes such as an unexplained rash or unusual texture and
night sweats and abdominal pain.
PREVENTION/PRECAUTIONS:
Cancer prevention is defined as active measures to decrease the
risk of cancer. The vast majority of
cancer cases are due to environmental
risk factors, and many, but not all, of
these environmental factors are
controllable lifestyle choices. Thus,
cancer is considered a largely
preventable disease. Greater than 30% of
cancer deaths could be prevented by
avoiding risk factors including: tobacco,
8 Saaol Times April, 2014
overweight/obesity, an insufficient diet, physical inactivity, alcohol,
sexually transmitted infections, and air pollution. Not all environmental
causes are controllable, such as naturally occurring background
radiation, and other cases of cancer are caused through hereditary
genetic disorders, and thus it is not possible to prevent all cases of cancer.
Therefore it is advised to quit smoking, get regular health check up,
maintain normal body weight, live an active lifestyle, include more
fruits and vegetables of different colour in daily diet, avoid red meat and
protect yourself from sunrays.
DETECTION & TREATMENT OF CANCER:
Awareness of early signs and symptoms and screening can
greatly reduce the risk of cancer. Effective screening helps in an early
diagnosis of any cancer. Varied medical procedures are available to
detect cancer; biopsy, endoscopy, mammography for breast cancer, Pap
test for cervical cancer but there is no full proof system to detect possible
cancer etc.
HOW BODY REACTS TO CANCER ?
When the normal cells of the body becomes cancerous
(abnormal) our immune system can detect these cells even in a very
preliminary stage. It immediately orders its White blood cells -
specially Lymphocytes to attack and kill these cells. A full flagged war
takes place inside our body. Cells die on both sides and the dead cells are
carried by our lymphatic ducts, lymph nodes and destroyed. If the
immune system wins – cancer is cured but if the immune system is weak,
cancer cells win and the cancer spreads. One of the reasons that the AIDS
patients die of cancer or infection is weak Immune system. Thus
strengthening the immune system with healthy lifestyle, food can
prevent cancer in many people.
WHY CANCER IS BECOMING SO COMMON
In some types of cancer the reasons are well known but many
people do not care. Habits like tobacco chewing, smoking are well
known to cause oral and lung cancer. But still these habits are increasing
with bad lifestyle. Known and unknown cancer causing chemicals are
present in insecticides used in agriculture, as preservatives, in the fumes

Saaol Times April, 2014 9

of pollution, in the artificial foods (genetically engineered) we eat can be
the cause of increased cases of cancer. Unknown radiations in the
atmosphere, which is increasing, can also be the reason. Increasing stress
in life also lowers our immunity – and this may also lead to more cancers.
Hormone replacement therapy and some drugs may also lead to cancer. A
famous study called China study implicated more cancer in Non
vegetarian food (meat) and showed that cancer is very low in
vegetarians.
TREATMENT OF CANCER & STAGE OF CANCER
Treatment of cancer includes: surgery, chemotherapy, radiation
therapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, laser, blood
transfusion, stem cell transplant etc.
Roughly speaking - Cancer, when present in local area is in stage
I. When it spreads to local lymph glands it is in stage II and when reaches
the nearby organs of the body is in stage III and when it reaches the blood
and distant organs( called metastasis) reaches Stage IV. Detected in stage
I and II – the treatment is very much possible with surgery with
chemotherapy or radiotherapy. But in late stages, when the cancer has
already spread, the treatment becomes more difficult. So, survival is very
good if cancer is detected in early stage.
WHY CANCER TREATMENT IS SO COSTLY?
Cancer treatment has become very expensive – mostly due to the
profit making tendency of the drug companies, radiotherapy machine
manufacturers and the hospitals. As the family can spend any amount for
treatment of cancer - the drug
companies have jacked up the prices
of the drugs – each injection can cost
about one lac rupees. Spending 20-
50 lacs for treatment of cancer has
become very common. Kickbacks
for the doctors are also very high.
Every organisation involved is
trying to take advantage of these
dying patients which is unfortunate. Cancer department has now become
money spinners for the Hospitals, only next to heart department.
