    TOPIC – ADJECTIVES (KINDS)

    Adjectives are describing words. A word used to express the quality, qunatity, numbers or
    point out at any person / thing.
    Examples: - i) Mona is a beautiful girl. ii) Krish is a clever student. iii) Rose is a lovely flower.

    ADJECTIVES OF QUALITY: - They tell us what kind a person, place or


    thing is.

    ADJECTIVES OF QUANTITY: - They tell us how much a thing is


    intended. These are primarily used before uncountable nouns.
    The words much, little, some, any, enough, sufficient, whole and no
    are some examples.

    ADJECTIVES OF NUMBER: - They tell us how many or in


    what persons or things stand. These are primarily used before
    countable nouns.
    The words all, many, several, five, some, first, twelfth, most are
    some examples.

    There are two types of adjectives of number: - 1. Cardinals : one, two, three – these show ‘how many’
    2. Ordinals : first, second, third – these tell the ‘order of
    things’ in a series

    DISTRIBUTIVE ADJECTIVES: - They show that


    persons or things are taken one at a time.
    Each, every, either, neither etc. are some examples.

    POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVES: -They show possession or


    belonging. They express to whom does the thing belong or who is
    the owner of it.
    My, your, his, her, its, our, your, their are some examples.
    DEMONSTRATIVE ADJECTIVES: -They tell which person or
    thing is meant.
    This, these, that, those, such, yonder point out which persons or things
    are meant. They answer the question ‘which’

    INTERROGATIVE ADJECTIVES: - They are used with nouns


    to ask questions.

    Ex: Find out the adjectives and state their kinds:


    1. The car sustained heavy damage in the accident.
    2. Roshan has written several stories.
    3. Every man has his duties.
    4. Neither of them will attend the meeting.
    5. Which colour do you prefer?
    6. Two students did not do their Mathematics homework.
    7. John won the second prize.
    8. That car is mine.
    9. A small leak is enough to sink a great ship.
    10. There isn’t much sugar in my coffee.

    Answers
    1. Heavy – adjective of quality
    2. Several – adjective of number
    3. Every – distributive adjective
    4. Neither – distributive adjective
    5. Which – interrogative adjective
    6. their - possessive adjective
    7. Second – adjective of number
    8. That – demonstrative adjective
    9. Small – adjective of quality; great – adjective of quality
    10. much – adjective of quantity

    Ex: Find out the adjectives and state their kinds:


    1. Whose shoes were left in the hallway?
    2. Each player improvised several parts of the composition.
    3. The teacher congratulated her for getting the first prize.
    4. Is there enough milk in the saucer?
    5. The way was long, the wind was cold.
