1. A dietitian wanted to test three different diet programs to find out if the mean weight loss
for each of these diet programs is the same. She randomly selected 24 overweight persons,
divided them into three groups of equal size, and put each group on one of the three diet
programs. The partial ANOVA table for the data on weight loss is given below:
Degree of
Source Sum of Squares Mean Square F value
Freedom
Treatment A 30.083 E
Error B D F G
Total C 117.958
2. Suppose that the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) wants to examine the
safety of compact cars, midsize cars, and full-size cars. It collects a sample of three for each
of the car types, conduct a crash test, and measure the pressure applied to the driver’s head
during the crash test. Using the hypothetical data provided below on the pressure applied to
the driver’s head during the crash test for each type of car, answer the following questions:
1
(c) What is the calculated value for the test statistic 𝐹?
(d) Construct ANOVA table for the data.
(e) By using ANOVA procedure, test whether the mean pressure applied to the
driver’s head during the crash test is equal for each types of car. Use a 0.05 level
of significance.
3. The marketing department of a company has designed three different boxes for its product.
It wants to determine which box will produce the largest amount of sales. Each box will be
test marketed in five different stores for a period of a month. Below is the incomplete
ANOVA table for this test.
Degree of
Source Sum of Squares Mean Square F value
Freedom
Block B 711.07 E H
Error C D F
Total 14 27,400.41

4. A study is conducted to compare the hardness of certain material produced at four different
temperature setting A, B, C and D. Because there might be variability from the different
machines used to produce the materials, the researcher decided to use randomized block
design, with the machine considered as block. The results of the reading on hardness scale of
material produced are as follows:
Temperature
Machine A B C D
