I am writing in connection with…
Semi-formal

Page |2

b. Open an informal letter with a general, friendly paragraph. Acknowledge your friendship
first, before explaining the reason for your letter. In fact, the first paragraph could include just
friendly small talk, unrelated to the reason for your writing. For example,
Dear Susan
I hope you and your family are all well! It was so wonderful to spend time with all of you last
month. Anyway, the reason I’m writing is that I have some good news: I am getting married in
September…
5. Write a clear purpose of letter before explaining the bullet points
For example, I hope you are fine! I’m just writing to let you know I quit my old job and found
something new.
6. Write at least 150 words. Practice writing letters till you know what 150 words feels like and
looks like. You will lose marks if you write less. You will not lose marks if you write more.
7. Include all three bulleted points. If you exclude even one of the points given to you in the
question prompt, you will get a lower grade. Answer all the points.

Structure of informal letter

Dear [First name only of person]

Paragraph 1- Hope you and your family would be alright! Say why you are writing
to them (I’m just writing to let you know that….)

Paragraph 2- Bullet point 1 and supporting details

Paragraph 3- Bullet point 2 and supporting details

Paragraph 4- Bullet point 3 and supporting details

Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

All the best

[Your first name only]

You shouldn’t need to change this structure and you can use it again and again for any informal
task 1 answer. Try making a plan before you start writing and use it to plan your answers. All
you have to do then is think of the supporting details for paragraphs 2, 3 and 4 and write your
answer.

Informal Language
It is a good idea to use contractions like ‘I’ve’, ‘I’d’ and ‘I’m’. This is one of the ways that you can
show the examiner that you know how to write an informal letter. Below is a range of informal
language that you can use in your informal letters. Which ones you use will depend on the
context.

Sample Question
A friend of yours is going on holiday soon and has asked
you to recommend a destination. Write a letter to your friend
and recommend a good place for a holiday that you have
visited before.

 say where you went,

 where you stayed,
 what you can do there and what the food was like.

Sample Answer

Dear Annie

Hope you’re well! I’ve got a great place for you to visit when you
get some time off work.

I went to Shanghai in China a fortnight ago and it was just perfect.

It only takes about 3 hours from where you live.

We stayed in a little hotel called the Dragon Inn. It wasn’t the

biggest hotel, or the most expensive, but I really loved the
personal service and the family who run it were so hospitable.

There are loads of things to do, but my favourite has to be the

Bund. You can stroll along there in the evening and admire the
view or grab a coffee and watch the world go by. I also have to
mention the delicious cuisine. You really should try the dim sum if
you go there; it was the best I’ve ever had.

Anyway, let me know if you have any questions about your trip.

Best wishes

Chris

Another sample
You have recently started work in a new company. Write a letter to an English-
speaking friend. In your letter
 explain why you changed jobs
 describe your new job
 tell him/her your other news
Dear Tom
I hope you are fine! I’m just writing to let you know I quit my old job and found
something new.
I was really fed up with being a brain surgeon because it wasn’t really much of a
challenge anymore. You know me; if I’m not learning new tricks, I get bored too easily
and have to find something new.
I’m now teaching English as a foreign language in Vietnam and it suits me down to the
ground. I teach two adult classes and a kindergarten class, which is not only challenging
but also rewarding too. Can you believe it?
I also have some other amazing news- I’m getting married. She was one of my first ever
students and I guess it was love at first sight for both of us. Make sure you keep the first
weekend in July free, so you can come and celebrate with us.
Keep in touch

That’s it. It will take you only a few minutes to write this out in the
exam and then all you have to do is think of the supporting details.
When thinking of supporting details don’t worry about being
entertaining or even thinking of the best ideas you can, just make
sure they are relevant.

On a recent holiday you lost a valuable item. Fortunately, you have
travel insurance to cover the cost of anything lost. Write a letter to the
manager of your insurance company. In your letter
 Describe the item you lost
 Explain how you lost it
 Tell the insurance company what you would like them to do
Dear Sir/Madam
I am writing to inform you that I recently lost my digital camera while on holiday in
Vietnam.
The camera is a black Canon 70d and cost $1550 when I bought it new last month. It
has a resolution of 20 megapixels, a Canon 67-millimetre lens and was in a brown
leather case with my name on it.
I lost it when I was having coffee with my husband in the backpacker area of Ho Chi
Minh City. I believe the coffee shop was called Highlands Coffee and it was on Pham
Ngu Lao Street. We had been at the coffee shop for around 45 minutes when I noticed it
was missing.
I am entitled to make a claim for the value of the above-mentioned item and request that
you send me details on what I need to do in order to proceed.

Page |9

Model Answer

Dear Ms. Snyder,

I am writing to request time off for an annual holiday trip with my

family.

Each year, my extended family members plan a family reunion in

Sacramento, California. Since we all live so far away, these
reunions have always been great opportunities for us to see each
other and reconnect. It is for this reason that I would need to
use some of my holiday time in August.

Since the reunion falls on Sunday, August 25th, I would be

available to work up until Friday, August 24th. Thus, I am formally
requesting time off from Monday, August 26th until Friday,
August 30th. I would be available to return to work on Monday,
September 2nd.

I fully realize that August is our busiest period, and taking holiday
during this time could potentially increase the workload of
my colleagues. As such, I would be more than happy to take
on any overtime in early August or during the month of
September.

Thank you for your understanding. I look forward to your

response.

Yours Sincerely,
Becky Range

Answer

Dear Henry,
I hope this letter finds you in the pink of your health. I’m writing this to let you
know about some important documents which I have forgotten at your place.
I think it was my wise decision to sub your invitation to stay at your home rather
than a hotel. All the love and care which I got from your family was amazing. I feel
so homely at your place that I didn’t even realise how the time passed.
I have forgotten to collect a coloured(yellow) envelope which is placed in the
upper drawer of that room where I stayed. It contains all the approvals of my
research work without which I cannot pursue my research at the University.
Henry, do me a favour, please post this envelop to my address as soon as
possible. I have attached my current address with is this letter.
Thanking you in advance.

Write a letter to the airline. In your letter;
 Describe what happened that caused you to miss your flight
 Explain how missing your flight impacted you
 Clearly state what you would like airline to do
Answer

Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing this letter to explain you the situation due to which I
missed my flight booked with your airline on 24th June.
My flight was scheduled to New York from New Delhi on 15:00 hours
and I reached three hours prior to this at the airport. After getting the
boarding pass, I was just waiting to board the flight. During that time
police came there in suspect of arresting murder convict and sealed the
boarding area.
By the time we were released, the flight had taken off. Owing to this, I
missed the conference in New York in which I was supposed to present
my research work. Anyhow, I requested the official to arrange another
meeting to discuss my research.
Kindly, either provide me a refund of my ticket or arrange me a new
flight to New York on 20th July, as missing this aircraft was due to some
unforeseen circumstances which were beyond my control.
An early reply will be appreciated.

Semi-formal letter

You have been living in a rental apartment for the past few years.
Recently, a new neighbour moved in who has loud parties several
times a week.
Write a letter to your landlord. In your letter:
 Explain the situation
 Describe why it bothers you
 Suggest a solution
Write at least 150 words. Begin your letter as follows: Dear Mr. Smith
Answer
Dear Mr Smith,
I am writing this letter to let you know about the disturbance which I am facing
from a neighbouring guy from last few weeks.
A month ago, a youngster named John moved in the adjacent flat of your
property. He frequently hosts a party on the terrace of his flat and invites his
other friends over there. Usually, they have barbecue and loud music till the late
night.
Currently, I am working as a full-time software engineer during weekdays and
attending a part-time online course in the evenings. Often their parties conflict
with my online class’s schedule, I am not able to attend my course properly
because of their loud music.
I have talked to them earlier and requested them to keep their sound system’s
volume low, but all was in vain. This time a formal complaint is required against
them, so please being the property owner write to municipal corporation
considering my ordeal.
Thanking you in advance.

Informal letter

You are having a party and want to invite your friend from a
different city.
Write a letter to your friend. In your letter;
 Describe why you are having the party
 Give directions on how to get to the venue
 Suggest how you can accommodate him/her
Answer
Dear Jack,
I’m writing to let you know that we are throwing a great party this year on
my birthday.
You know usually I celebrate my birthday my home with mom and dad, but
this year there’ll be a special celebration. Reason behind this is that my
mom will also retire on same date from her position of deputy
commissioner. So, it’ll be a great evening on my birthday this year.
We’ve booked lake side farm house named The Hamlet for this event.
It’s just few miles from the city centre and you can arrive here simply by
booking a cab from the hotel where you’ll be staying. Just install uber
application for booking a taxi in your mobile phone before arriving
here.
My dad has booked the hotel Sepal for all the guests who are from
abroad. I’ve spared the room with balcony facing the downtown for
you. Believe me it’ll be really amazing to stay there.
Revert me soon.

Formal letter

For the past year, you have been a member of a local club. Now you want to
discontinue your membership. Write a letter to the club secretary. In your letter

● state what type of membership you have and how you have
paid for this
● give details of how you have benefited from the club
● explain why you want to leave
Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to let you know that I intend to terminate my membership

next month.

I am a platinum member which, as I am sure you know, entitles me to

use your facilities in all locations across the country. I availed myself
of the offer on your website and paid online with my credit card at
the start of the year.

Since joining your club, I have become fitter, happier and more well-
rounded as a person. The morning yoga sessions help me to meditate
before a busy day at work and I am also able to let out my aggression
on the punching bags in the evening.

Unfortunately, I am unable to continue with my membership because

I am going back to live in Ireland. I looked at your international
locations and it looks like Ireland is not one of the countries you are
present in, but if you decide to launch a gym there, I would be more
than happy to rejoin.

Hope you would understand my situation!

Yours faithfully,
Chris

You recently went on a business trip to another country and you faced
an issue at the airport. Write a letter to the airport management and
include
 what the details of your flight were.
 what the problem at the airport was.
 some suggestions for improvement.

Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the service at your
airport.
I was flying from Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City to Da Nang
on the 23rd of October 2015 with my wife and child. We arrived a full
three hours before the flight to be sure of catching the flight in time.
I must say that your staff’s control of customers in the airport,
particularly queuing, is appalling. People were freely jumping the queue
and both the check-in staff and the security staff did nothing to prevent
them or to restore order when arguments broke out between
passengers about this issue.
I would like to suggest that you put proper barriers up that show
people the correct way to form a line and also train your staff to tell
people when they are breaking the rules. I know it is not in your culture
to scold people, but international standards must be maintained in an
international airport.
I look forward to hearing your response.
Yours faithfully,
Chris Pell

You are a university student living in on-campus

accommodation. You are having some problems
with the Internet connection in your room.
Write to the supervisor of your residence, in your letter:
● Introduce yourself
● Inform him/her of the situation
● Request that the problem be fixed
Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing this letter to make a complaint about the connection to the

Internet in my room.

My name is Christopher Pell and I am a law student currently residing in

Elm’s Wood Halls of Residence on the Malone Road. I am a post-graduate
student currently in the latter stages of doing my Master’s dissertation. I
live in the new complex in A block on the fifth floor, room 15.

A few times a day, without warning, the internet connection suddenly stops
and when I run the troubleshooting program on my computer it states that
there is an issue with the IP address. This is very inconvenient for me
because it means that I have to stop work and go to a local coffee shop to
get online.

I would like it if one of your technicians could come around as soon as

possible and test the line and establish the problem. Someone looked at
it last week and said that everything was fine, but it is obviously not. I pay
twenty pounds a month for the line and I do not think that this is
satisfactory service.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,
Christopher Pell

You recently moved to a different city and are looking for a

place to stay.
Write to a real estate agent and:
● explain why you want to move.
● mention what location would you prefer.
● describe the accommodation type that you need.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to express my interest in buying a new home in Ho Chi Minh

City.

I am currently living in Tan Phu District and my wife and I feel it is time
to stop renting and finally purchase our own home. A new construction
project is starting right beside our current apartment and the
anticipated noise pollution and dust is another good reason to relocate.

I would prefer to live either in District 2 or District 7. In District 2 I would

like to live near Thao Dien Street so that I can walk to the shops and visit
the other amenities on that road. If you have any apartments in the newer
developments in District 7, we would also love to view these.

The most important considerations are space and security. The

apartment must be at least 150 square meters and it must also have at
least 3 bedrooms and an office. I would also like you to recommend
somewhere that has excellent security, with a modern surveillance
system and responsible guards.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,
Chris

Write a letter to your friend who is interested in learning how to drive.

In your letter
● say why a driving license is advantageous
● recommend a driving school
● give any extra guidance /tips

Hi Emma,

I thought I’d write to you and try to convince you to finally get your
driving license and tell you about a great instructor I know.

If you got your license, you could easily pick your kids up from school
every day and they wouldn’t have to wait for the bus. It would also give
you lots more independence and you could go anywhere you liked when
the children are busy at school.

I’ve found the perfect driving instructor for you. She’s a young lady called
Chloe and she’s good friends with my wife. As you know, my wife was
struggling to pass her test for years and it only took a few lessons with
Chloe to give her lots of confidence and she passed with flying colours.

The best tip I can give you is to find a place where there are no cars and
just practice there. I know that you get really nervous in traffic and are
afraid of having an accident, so all you need is a little time to get used to
driving without any of those distractions.

Anyway, good luck with the lessons.

Best wishes,
Chris

You have just won two tickets to a concert and want

to invite your friend to go with you.

Write a letter to your friend. In the letter

● give details about the concert
● describe how you won the tickets
● explain why you’ve chosen your friend to go with you.

Dear Jessie,

I’m writing to let you know that I’ve just won two concert tickets
for this weekend and I was wondering if you wanted to come with
me.

The tickets are for the Stone Tulips this Saturday in Wembley and
the doors open at 7 o’clock, but we probably don’t need to get there
that early because the gig isn’t scheduled to start until 9 o’clock.

To win the tickets, I had to phone the John Flag radio show and answer
a simple question about the band, but I also needed to be the one-
hundredth caller. I tried calling four times before getting through and
then I got straight through to John Flag and I was on air and everything.

Anyway, I’ve been meaning to contact you for a while now and we
used to always listen to the Stone Tulips together, so I thought that
this would be the perfect opportunity for us to catch up. I think my
sister was hoping that I’d bring her, but she never liked them
anyway so it makes much more sense for you to come with me.

Let me know if you’re able to go as soon as you can.

Best wishes,

Walter
