The planet Mars, often known as “The Red Planet”, can be seen from Earth in the night sky
without a telescope. Its size and brightness varies/ changes greatly according to its position. Countless
books have been written about Mars. It has always held a fascination for people who are interested in the
possibility of life on other planets. Until the first spacecraft visited Mars in 1965, it was believed that
there was water on the planet. But photographs sent back to Earth did not support his belief.
Although astronomer Phelps stated in 1895 that “conditions are all favourable/ suitable for life”,
the truth is that the planet Mars would be unsuitable for human habitation, not only due to lack/
shortage/ absence of water, but also because of the cold temperature and high winds. Therefore, the
possibility of humans setting foot on the Red planet in the near future is uncertain. It is possible,
however that there was a life on the Red planet in the past. Signs of riverbeds have been found- now
dried up, but perhaps they had contained water. And where there is water, there is always the possibility
of life. More research will be carried out during future missions to Mars.

If you were to stop people in the street and ask them to name a ship that had been sunk, it is likely
that nearly all of them would say the Titanic. For the sinking of the Titanic was, if not the most tragic,
certainly the most famous sea disaster in the history of ocean travel.
The Titanic was built as a luxury liner, intended to be the fastest in the world, and a great deal of
publicity had surrounded it. The last point probably explains why so many important people from all
walks of life were on the boat when it went down.
The Titanic was on its maiden voyage to America in 1912 when it struck an iceberg and sank. Of its
2.300 passengers, more than two thirds were drowned. Because the Titanic was thought to be virtually
unsinkable, no one was prepared for the tragedy. There was total panic as very few of the passengers had
bothered to learn the necessary drill in the event of trouble. There was severe shortage of lifeboats and
those that were launched were still half empty. The one point of calm was to be found in the ballroom
where the band carried on playing right to the very end.
What makes the sinking of the Titanic even more tragic in the fact that warning of icebergs had
been sent, yet the liner was still continuing at full speed. In addition, one ship was only ten miles away
but did not receive the distress signal.
One good thing did, however, result from the disaster. The whole question of safety at sea was
looked into, resulting in much better safety measures including stricter lifeboat regulations and
establishment of an iceberg patrol.
71. The sinking of the Titanic was …………..
A. the most tragic sea disaster. B. the most historic sea disaster.
C. the most famous sea disaster. D. the first great sea disaster.
72. Why were so many important people on board?
A. The Titanic had received a lot of publicity. B. The Titanic was a luxury liner.
C. It was the fastest liner in the world. D. They wanted to go to America.
73. The lifeboats were ……………
A. too short. B. launched too soon. C. half finished. D. poorly equipped.
74. The chances of disaster were increased because
A. no warnings had been sent. B. the dance band were playing too loud.
C. the Titanic was travelling too fast. D. there were no distress calls.

E. Here, then, the water level has evidently dropped by 20 metres in little over a century
F. It was crisis-crossed by valleys filled with palm trees and was thronged with wildlife
G. Such are conditions in the Sahara Desert in recent times
The Sahara’s meager resources are being plundered right to the present day. This is shown most
clearly in the dramatic fall in the region’s precious water reserves. The rock is of a type which hinders
easy underground storage so the water supply depends on rainfall. (0) B . However, the seriousness
of the situation goes far beyond mere seasonal changes.
There’s one district where observations go back at least 125 years. Here it is known that wells of
the balance beam type were once used in cultivated areas. This way of drawing water is intended for the
irrigation of gardens and small plots and works only if there’s water not more than about five metres
below the surface.
(76) C .They have all been replaced by wells from which the water has to be raised by
draught animals, because it is now 25 metres down. (77) E .
In a classic example of a vicious circle, shortage of water has led to the digging of more wells to
save the flocks and birds. As these have been deepened the water supply has been further depleted.
(78) D .
The Air region was once regarded as the Switzerland of Africa because of its temperate climate.
(79) F . Nowadays, though, there are only a third of the palms which existed there at the
turn of the century. The amount of wildlife has shown a proportionate fall. (80) A . This is

III. Write a paragraph about the advantages of taking a military training course for children
during the summer holiday.
Use specific reasons and any relevant examples to support your view in about 120-150 words. (10
points)
Model 1:
In the process of receiving a good education, children will have to perceive many skills which cannot be
taught by normal people but military, for example survival skills. Therefore, a summer camp in a military
school is an ideal adventure that more and more parents want their offspring to have due to its
tremendous benefits. First of all, campers at military bases will be independent from their parents, living
in a new environment with people they have never met. This situation helps them to how learn to adapt to
new circumstances, thus develop their social skills. Secondly, they have to exercise all day, which is
extremely beneficial to children who spend all daytime sitting at school to develop physical fitness. It is
also a valuable experience to learn how to survive in some particular cases, which can never be taught at
school. Last but not least, teamwork and collaboration is also completed in the process of children’s
maturation. They have to work together to find out the most effective method to solve the problems and
finish the tasks. In essence, despite there are still some unfortunate demerits, a military summer course is
a fascinating experience that most children should be involved in.
Model 2:
Nowadays, parents are likely to enroll their children for a military course during the summer holiday
because of numerous advantages that children can enjoy. First and foremost, they will be able to develop
lifelong skills. More specifically, a child will build important decision-making skill as they face
challenges and overcome obstacles while trying new and exciting activities. They also learn how to adapt
to a new environment though it may be unfavorable to him. Secondly, military course promotes
independence and self-discipline which are important in helping children develop a sense of identity.
They will become more self-reliant and mature as they explore their interests and discover their strengths
and weaknesses. Last but not least, rather than waste time on computer games and mobile phones,
children are encouraged to have a connection with nature. The military course on occasion force children
to work in the forest in order to experience new life with plants and animals instead of teaching them
indoor which they have done all the summer. In short, obviously, children had better participate in a
military training course during the summer holiday instead of spending time meaninglessly.
