ADDING INTEGERS

1) ADDING TWO INTEGERS HAVING THE SAME SIGN

A. ADDING TWO POSITIVE INTEGERS

Example : Study the following examples.

a) (+9) + (+10) = (+19)

b) (+16) + (+4) = (+20)

c) (+23) + (+12) = (+35)

Adding two positive integer gives us a positive number.

B. ADDING TWO NEGATIVE INTEGERS

Example : Study the following examples.

a) (−7) + (−3) = (−10)

b) (−14) + (−5) = (−19)

c) (−11) + (−4) = (−15)

Adding two negative integer gives us a negative number.

In adding two integers with the same sign, first find the sum ignoring their signs and
then give the answer with the same sign.

EXERCISES 1
Do the following operations.

a) (−15) + (−23) =

b) (+14) + (+26) =

c) (−11) + (−7) =

d) (+8) + (+38) =

e) (−16) + (−25) =

f) (−19) + (−2) =

g) (−7) + (−9) + (−13) =

h) (+16) + (+4) + (+15) =

2) ADDING TWO INTEGERS WITH DIFFERENT SIGNS

Example : Study the following examples.

a) (−9) + (+10) = (+1)

b) (−7) + (+5) = (−2)

c) (+12) + (−5) = (+7)

d) (+10) + (−18) = (−8)

When adding two integers with different signs we proceed these

steps.
1) Find the absolute value of the numbers.
2) Find the difference between these absolute values of the integers.
3) Take the sign of the integer with the bigger absolute value.

2
Example : Study the following examples.
a) (−5) + (+5) = 0

b) (+9) + (−9) = 0

If two integers have different signs and the same absolute value, the sum of the
numbers is zero.

Example : Study the following examples.

a) (−5) + 0 = (−5)

b) 0 + (−9) = (−9)

Zero(0) is identity element for addition on integers.
