DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

DR. KOCHUTHRESIA JOSE

INTRODUCTION
 Body is living with the nutrients from food & water.
 Nutrients are carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins &
minerals.
 Digestive system is the only system meant for digestion
& absorption of food & water.
 It is also called as Gastro intestinal tract /GI
tract/Digestive tract.
 This a tract starts from Mouth, ends in Anus.
 Organs of this system are- mouth, esophagus, stomach,
duodenum, intestines (small & large) rectum& anal
canal. Also includes accessory organs like liver, gall
bladder & pancreas.
 After digestion protein break into Amino acids, fats
break into fatty acids & glycerol, and carbohydrates
break into simple sugars.
 Digestion means in simpler words breaking of food &
water in simpler forms which makes it easier for
absorption.
 Various enzymes ,hormones ,acid ,and other secretions
also facilitates digestion & absorption.
 Movement of food & water through GIT is by
peristalsis.
 The final product of digestion is stools (excreta) which
will be eliminated out from anus.
MOUTH
 Organ for chewing, grinding, moisturizing,
and reducing the particle size of the gross food.
Parts are
A. Teeth - ( 32, with hardest material dentin, for
reducing particle size)
B. Tongue – Muscular organ with papillae for taste
perception- sweet, sour, bitter & pungent ) ,also
makes the food easier for swallowing.
C. Salivary glands – moisturizes food ,makes it
easier for swallowing & absorption.
ESOPHAGUS
 Tube like structure which connects mouth with
stomach.
 It helps to transport chewed food to stomach.
 Lower part is closed by a sphincter (esophageal
sphincter) which prevents the back flow of food from
stomach.
No absorption happens in this area
STOMACH
 Most distended part of GIT.
 Muscular organ which stores and digests food passed
from esophagus.
 Contains most concentrated acid –hydrochloric acid
for digestion.
 Chewed food is now called as “CHYME’’
 Digestion starts from here with the help of HCL &
Digestive enzymes of gastric juice.
SMALL INTESTINE
 Longest coiled part.
 3 parts – duodenum, jejunum, & ileum.
 Duodenum – 1st part to which liver (bile) &
pancreas (pancreatic juice) secretes their
secretions.
PH will be alkaline.
 Jejunum - 2nd part which is highly coiled.
 Ileum - 3rd part ,continues with large intestine.
 Maximum absorption takes places in this area.
 Absorption is by intestinal villas ( finger like
projections).
LARGE INTESTINE
 More water absorption occurs here.
 Area for Formation of stools .
 Rich bacterial flora helps in absorption and formation
of stools.
 after complete digestion & absorption the waste will
be excreted out as stools through rectum and anal
canal.

Importance in yoga
 Main system in which yoga acts very effectively.
 For each organ site separate asanas are their.
 Examples ;
1. Paschimothana asana (seated forward bend)
2. Baala asana (child pose)
3. Pavana mukta asana (wind relieving pose)
4. Trokona asana(triangle pose)ardhamatsyendr asana
