Recent technologies and inventions in
Technical Textiles
BASF is adding to polyphthalamide (PPA) portfolio of Ultramid Advanced by unveiling carbon-fibre reinforced grades with
fillings of 20, 30 and 40 per cent. The new materials make for extremely lightweight parts and can safely replace aluminum and
magnesium without loss in stiffness and strength. These can be used to manufacture automotive structural parts.
Pontis Engineering, which specialises in one-stop-shop engineering solutions for advanced composite niche applications, is
collaborating with AMAC to develop next level composite solutions for the e-mobility sector. The two intend to contribute to
meeting the global sustainability challenges with high-end, lightweight and energy-saving composite solutions.
Va-Q-tec, pioneer of highly efficient products for thermal insulation, and Hutchinson are collaborating to develop high-
performance, super-efficient insulation solutions to improve thermal management of airplanes and electric vehicles. The strategic
partnership provides va-Q-tec’s vacuum insulation panels to tap into the automotive and aerospace industries.
Scientists at the University of Sydney have devised a process for recycling of CFRP composites which retains 90 per cent of their
original strength. Carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites, used in products such as wind turbines, aeroplane parts,
cars and ships, are non-biodegradable materials and, until now, lacked a viable recycling method.
Piana Group, the 439-year-old textile company known for breakthrough chemical treatment innovations for fibre and nonwoven
textiles in automotive, appliance and bedding markets, has developed a new technology which protects any textile or porous
surface against viruses and bacteria. The technology involves an antiviral and antibacterial treatment for fibres.
OrthoLite, the industry leader of branded, high performance and comfort footwear solutions, has developed a new thermal insole
technology, setting a new standard in cold-weather footwear protection.

Bindatex Advanced Materials Cutting, which specialises in precision cutting of ‘difficult to cut’ materials, is enhancing capacity for
slitting nonwovens as it continues to deliver fast turnaround times. The expansion follows the successful completion of projects
for several UK PPE manufacturers and other companies in the medical technology sector.
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved Livinguard’s patented self-disinfecting textile. The new textile
is effective against Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria to the tune of 100,000 times in 10 minutes. Livinguard’s self-
disinfecting technology remains effective after 30 industrial washes, making it useful across many industries.
Jinan Shengquan Group Share Holding Co (SQ Group) in partnership with Hong Kong Nano and Advanced Materials Institute
(NAMI) has developed an antiviral, antibacterial fabric which, it claims, kills 100 per cent of the COVID-19 virus under
experimental conditions. The activity is retained even after 30 washes, with fabric killing over 99 per cent of viruses.
Oerlikon Nonwoven has installed a double-beam meltblown plant with ecuTEC+ electro charging unit at Wolf PVG. With this, the
East Westphalian company can now supply nonwovens for producing surgical and FFP2 masks. In addition to this filter material,
high-quality meltblown nonwovens can also be produced for medical and industrial filter applications.
