Conceptual and Fundamental study of Medovaha Srotas W.S.R. to
Sthaulya
Introduction-
Concepts of srotas-
Srotas is one of essential concept for understanding the human life base. Briefly
Srotas are the channels which are dominated by Akash Mahabhoot through
which Poshak Dhatu pass to form Sthayi Dhatu. Dhatu terms derived from
Sanskrit “ Du- Dhajya- Dharana Posanayo” which refers Dharana and Poshana I.e
support and nourish. Dhatuhave two sides viz. Sthayi or Poshya and and Asthayi
or Poshaka. Srotas is described as channels of circulation that transport the
Dhatus which are constantly subjected to metabolic.

Medovaha srotas-
Medovaha srotas is one of the important srotas related to Medodhatu formation
and Poshan. The Mool of Medovahasrotas are Vrikka,Kati,Vapavahan and
Mamsa. The channels which give nutrition to the Medodhatu or the vessels
carrying the nutritive material up to the site of medodhatu can be considered as
Medovaha srotas. The nutrient material of a particular Dhatu does not nourish it
through a Srotas other than its own. Thus the nutrient meant for medodhatu
while being transported by Rasa through Rakta and Mansa dhatu may not be
allowed to ooze through the mukhas of Raktavaha and Mansavaha srotas. This
mechanism mentioned in Ayurveda is similar to hypothesis seen to emerge from
modern scientific researches in the field of Physiology and dynamics of the
exchange of fluid across capillaries.

Meda-
Sthaulya is a Dushya dominant Vyadhi. Meda plays a major role in pathogenesis of
Sthaulya. Meda is the fourth dhatu of the body in almost place It is predominantly
seen as thick layer underneath the Twaka, inside udara, attached to
its(Peritoneum and Omentum )uras(chest) and siras(Head). All these are together
called as adipose tissue. Unless and until the anatomical and physiological aspect
of Medo Dhatu is known the pathological and therapeutically study of the disease
sthaulya (obesity)will be root less because the pathology is what the physiology
was. Therefore it is very important to know different aspects of Meda. According
to the Shabdakalpadrum, Meda is produced from “ Mansa Dhatu”.

Definition of Sthaulya-
मेदोमांसातिवृद्धत्त्वाच्चस्फिगुदरस्तन:l

अयथोपचयोउत्साहोनरोअतिस्थूल उच्च्यते।। (

Acharya Charaka mentioned that a person in whom excessive and abnormal

increase of Medodhatu along with Mamsadhatu is found which results into
pendulous apperance of buttocks, belly and breasts and whose increase bulk is not
matched by a corresponding in energy is called Atisthula Purusha.
 Charakacharya described the features of healthy body, having equal
distribution of Mansa and properly distributed build up.
“सममांसप्रमाणस्तुसमसंहनोनर:l

दृढ़ें न्द्रियों विकाराणां नबलेनाभिभूयते।।

क्षुत्पिपासातप सह: शीतव्यायामसंसह:l

 Now a days obesity has become the most common disorder of the man of
present era. We can evaluate the symptomatology of Sthaulya with the
obesity. All the distinctive features and complications of itself say that it is
sthaulya. It is increasing the prevalence and that poses a high risk for the
development of Diabetes mellitus, Hypertension, Heart disease. Obesity is
caused by sedentary lifestyle, oversaturation, intake of heavy, sweet, cold
and fatty diet, indulgence in day-sleeping and exhilaration, lack of mental
work and genetic defects.
 Vayu, due to passage have been obstructed with fat, moves about
abundantly in belly and thus stimulates digestion and absorb food. Hence
the person digets food quickly and desires excessive the intake of food.
These two Agani and vayu are particularly complicating and as such burn
the obese like the forest-fire burning the forest. In the event of excessive
increase of fat, vayu etc (Doshas) suddenly give rise to severe disorder and
thus destroy the life shortly. The person is called as over-obese who,due to
excessive increase of fat and muscles has pendulous buttocks, abdomen
and breasts and suffers from deficient metabolism and energy.
 The WHO definition is-
“a BMI greater than or equal to 25 is over weight”.
“ a BMI greater than or equal to 30 is obesity”.

Importance of Medovaha Srotas-

 The vitation of Medovaha Srotas will lead to the manifestation of 8 types of
socially unfit body frames. They are- Atisthula, Atikrusha, Atiloma, Aloma,
Atigaura, Atikrish,Atideergha, Atihrusva.
 Medovaha srotas plays an important role in transportation of the
transforming Meda Dhatu as well as the transduation of Nutrients essential
for metabolism of Meda Dhatu.
 As a tree is seriously affected by injury to its root, similarly the channels of
circulation in the human body are seriously affected when their sroto
moola is injured.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVE OF STUDY-

 To study the concept of Medovahasrotas through Samhitas Granthas.
 Conceptual study focusing basic fundaments about the disease Sthaulya in
both Ayurvedic and modern point of view .

Material and Methods(Source of Data)-

Material related to Medovahasrotas and Sthaulya have been collected from
classical Ayurvedic text books, Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita,Yoga Ratnakar
different journals Research Papers, Authentic websites,Authentic literatures etc.
Need of Study-
 Obesity is burning and challenging problem in modern era
because of its long term complications and life threatening
disorder.
 Obesity increases some features of PCOS(Polycystic ovary
syndrome) such as Hyperandrogenism,Hirusitm,Infertility and
pregnancy complications. Moreover obesity exacerbates many of
the reproductive and metabolic abnormalities associated with
PCOS.
 After the deep study of our ancient literature,we can definitely
say that our Aacharyas also knew the importance of this disease.
Sthaulya have been described as notorious disorder by Aacharya
Charaka in Asthaunidita Purusha.
 Classical study and experimentation is various ways a theory is
accepted only after the proper reasoning (Tarka) of observation.
