environment they exist in. it is having an ethical relationship with the natural environment and
our moral obligations as human beings towards conserving and protecting the environment.
Environmental ethics include questions as: should human beings cause the extinction of
biological species? Should human beings keep the environment safer for future generations?
Should human beings continue with deforestation, which will eventually lead to desertification?
Should humans continue releasing harmful gases to the background leading to ozone layer
destruction? How can we humans improve the quality of life through environmental
conservation? These are the ecological ethics that apply in the Philippines (Jeffery, 2005).
As the Philippines continue expanding their economy, the country is still tied to environmental
pollution, becoming a significant problem. Some of the ecological issues include corrosion,
which provides water pollution where industries dispose of the chemical waste into rivers. The
Filipinos throw their garbage into water bodies, causing damage to marine life—air pollution
from industrial effluents and exhaust from vehicles, leading to acid rain affecting the natural
vegetation. Global warming has led to rising temperatures beyond the minimum heat indexes due
to emissions of harmful gases. It also leads to tornadoes and typhoons, which could lead to
earthquakes and floods.
Take Manila Bay Dolomite issue as an example. Manila Bay has now received its "second dose"
of fresh Dolomite sand recently despite criticisms from citizens during its first dose, replacing
the washed-out sand that was initially laid out. Officials behind the initiative responded to
criticisms about budget allocation on the said project from citizens who are calling out the
urgency of the second dose of vaccines instead of the second dose of Dolomite by saying that an
allocated budget cannot be reallocated to another. What are your thoughts about the
rehabilitation project? Do you think they should still pursue the rehabilitation or allocate the
budget to vaccines or financial aids instead?
The environmental problem of overpopulation has been affecting the Philippines, where the
rising demand for housing has led to deforestation. The need for food has also led to the use of
harmful products to stimulate the fast growth of food, destroying the organic composition of soil,
and endangering fellow humans' lives. There has been a depletion of natural resources due to
rampant mining activities without land reclamation. Deforestation due to the demand for
electricity lines destroys the natural sources of fresh drinking water and could lead to
desertification. (ENVIRON, 2021).
1. How can private sectors be held accountable for reducing the damages caused to the
environment?
The private sector can be held accountable for reducing the environmental damages since most
of the pollution comes from the industries privately owned. The industry should follow the
ecological ethics of reducing pollution. There are many private sectors today that has a negative
impact on our environment because of their eagerness to succeed in the business world. They
sometimes forgot to care for our environment and have the right balance on having a business
and taking care of the environment.
Private sector is mostly criticized for increasing environment pollution. It is argued
that private sector sacrifices the environment in pursuit for profits. In a defense
mechanism private sector in the economy is also argued to reduce pollution of the
environment. Among the ways of reducing pollution is moving towards a sustainable
industrial production. Private sector can reduce pollution by reducing the number of
trips you take in your car; this reduces air pollution. Reduction or elimination of
fireplace and wood stove usage also reduces pollution. Avoidance of burning of
leaves, trash, and other materials and avoiding usage of gas-powered lawn and
garden equipment can also preserve the environment.
a. Using energy more efficiently. Producing electricity and natural gas and
delivering it to your door generates greenhouse gas emissions.
b. Install renewables. Installing clean, renewable energy systems, such as
solar and wind, can reduce your impact on the environment significantly while
lowering your energy bill.
c. Reducing, reusing, recycling. All the materials and equipment in your
facility must be produced and shipped there, and then disposed of—all of
which impacts the environment. Look for ways to use less; it could be
something as simple as printing on both sides of paper or developing a better
preventive maintenance program to make equipment last longer. Establish a
companywide recycling, reusing, and reducing program.
d. Shipping goods more efficiently. When business delivers products, they
should consider ways to reduce shipping emissions.
2. Habits could the Filipinos practice (in a microlevel) taking further care of the environment:
For us to take further care of the environment, I think it should start within ourselves. We should
have discipline in terms of throwing our trash. We should also throw our plastics away and start
using eco-friendly materials for our daily activities. Filipinos must practice some measures
that conserve the environment. The measures include water conservation, tree planting and
waste segregation. Through water conservation water pollution is reduced. The Filipinos
should also follow environmental pollution ethics and make it their responsibility to protect and
maintain the environment. Tree planting preserves the environment in that it provides clean
and fresh air. Well waste management practices ensures that pollution is minimized if not
eliminated. The environment is preserved through these measures.
Today, the Filipino communities need start an act by putting law or policy on taking good care of
our Mother Nature. This is by means of eradicating the use of plastics on every shop, malls, or
any business to ease the damages. Eco bags are now required when having a grocery. Even if
there are still people who use plastic, a small step of change would always make a difference.
