Superintendent Lance Bagstad's statement of recommendations about reopening school: “The Park

Rapids Area Schools will be returning in person on Sept. 7. If you look at your watch, it’s a couple weeks
away. But it’s very soon. And as a district, we will continue to maintain a healthy and safe environment
for our students, families and staff, and our visitors. The CDC has provided resources and information to
help our families understand the recommendations and reducing the spread of COVID. For the 2021-22
school opening, the determination of implementing recommendations for opening has been given to
our local school board to make those determinations. So, I am recommending the following procedures
for Park Rapids Area Schools to open the 2021-22 school year. First off, with masking, I do recommend
that Park Rapids Area Schools do not require face masks in the school setting, and to support, most
importantly, students, families and staff in their choice to wear a mask. Masks, however, will be
required on buses, including activity buses, to and from school, as per the federal order which is
currently in place. Physical distancing in cohorts: I do recommend that the Park Rapids schools do not
exclude students from in-person learning when physical distancing is not possible. I recommend that
the district utilize the multi-layered safety protocol approach of proper handwashing, covering your
coughs, staying home when you’re symptomatic. And I recommend the school continue with its routine
of cleaning and disinfecting to further reduce the risk of COVID. Positive cases: As currently required,
Park Rapids Area Schools health staff will continue to report confirmed cases of COVID to MDE:
Vaccinations: I recommend the Park Rapids Area Schools to support families in their choice to
participate in the vaccination program. Vaccinations are available at our local clinics. Health screening: I
recommend that the Park Rapids Schools follow the MDH’s decision tree that has worked in the past. I
know it will work in the future. When students and staff present symptoms, or signs of COVID, the best
practice, of course, is to stay home when you’re not feeling well. I also recommend the Park Rapids
Schools to continue supporting our students and families and our staff, and encourage anyone to do
their part to help reduce the spread of COVID. And lastly, I recommend at this time that the district not
plan on implementing procedures which are not mandated by the federal or state government.”
