COMPLEX NUMBERS
Powers with fractional exponents
1 Is denoted by i. This set of numbers will be
called the set of complex numbers and the set
will be denoted by the letter C.

1 i, i C

If i is taken several times as a factor, powers of i are obtained.

Powers of i may be simplified into –i,i,1 or -1

SET OF COMPLEX NUMBERS
Set of numbers having the form a bi,
where a, b R
•a is called the real part, and b, the imaginary part of the
number a+bi.
•The symbol i is used to indicate that b is the imaginary part

b 0 the complex number reduces to a real number

b 0 the complex number is called an imaginary

number
