Assignment 03

1. For the circuit shown below, find:

a. The average power delivered to the load

b. The average power absorbed by the line

c. The apparent power supplied by the voltage source

d. The power factor of the load

e. The power factor of the line plus the load

2. A circuit diagram is shown below. Calculate the supply voltage V .

3. A single phase motor connected to 400V, 50Hz supply which takes 31.7A at a
power factor of 0.7 lagging. Calculate the capacitance required in parallel which
the motor to raise the power factor to 0.9 lagging.

4. A single phase AC generator supplies the following loads:

 Lighting load of 20kW at unity power factor
 Induction motor load of 100kW at power factor of 0.707 lagging
Calculate the total KW and kVA delivered by the generator and power factor at
which it works.

5. For the RL circuit shown in Figure below, compute the output voltage and the
angle of lead.
R=280Ω

Vs=25V∠0o +
XL=200Ω Vout

7. A 6kW load is to be supplied at 230 V by a PVC sheathed and insulated twin and
cpc copper cable, 8 metres in length. The cable is clipped on the surface through
an area with an ambient temperature of 40°C and is grouped with three other
cables of similar size and loading. The protection is by means of a BS 3036 fuse.
It is assumed in this example that all the correction factors need to be applied)

Available fuses are 20A, 30A, 40A, 50A

Temperature factor (Ca ) = 0.94
Grouping factor (Cg ) = 0.65
Fusing factor (Cr ) = 0.725
I. Calculate the design current (Ib)
II. Select the type and current rating of the overcurrent device.
III. Calculate the tabulated current (It)
IV. Select the suitable cable.
V. Calculate the voltage drop using following formula and ensure that
voltage drop is not more than 5%.
Volts drop = mv/a/m x design current, Ib x length of run in metres, L
