The play tells the story of Macbeth, a Scottish general, who receives a prophecy from three witches that he will become King of Scotland. He conspires to murder the current King Duncan to fulfill the prophecy, after which he becomes plagued by paranoia and guilt.

When Macbeth and Banquo meet the three witches, the witches greet Macbeth as 'Thane of Glamis', 'Thane of Cawdor', and future King of Scotland, which shocks and confuses Macbeth.

The witches tell Macbeth that he will be Thane of Cawdor and King of Scotland. They also tell Banquo that his descendants will be kings, though Banquo himself will not be king.

MACBETH

Script

ACT 1
SCENE 1
Narrator: Once upon a time, there was a battle between Scotland and Norway. The 3
witches gathered and… (thunder & lightning)
WITCH 1: Oh witches! When should we three meet again? In thunder, lightning or
rain?
WITCH 2: We will meet when the war is over.
WITCH 3: That will happen before sunset.
WITCH 1: Where should we meet?
WITCH 2: At the field.
WITCH 3: We will meet Macbeth there.
WITCH 1: Well then, my cat is calling me. I’m coming, Graymalkin!
WITCH 2: I hear my toad, Paddock calls me.
WITCH 3: My spirit is calling me. I have to go now.
ALL: Fair is foul, and foul is fair. Let’s go.
(They exit.)

SCENE 2
(Trumpet and soldiers fighting)
Narrator: At the battlefield, KING DUNCAN with his sons
MALCOLM and DONALBAIN, together with LENNOX, meet up with a wounded and bloody
captain.
DUNCAN: Who is this bloody man?
MALCOLM: This is the brave sergeant who saved me. Come, brave friend, tell the
king what happened just now.
CAPTAIN: Brave Macbeth defeated the rebel Macdonwald! Lady Luck was indeed
with him.
DUNCAN: My brave relative! What a worthy man!
CAPTAIN: Yet as soon the rebels run away, the Norwegian king attack us.
DUNCAN: Were you not afraid?
CAPTAIN: To tell you the truth, they fought the new enemy with twice as much force
as before! But now, I feel weak. My wounds must be tended to.
DUNCAN: You bring honour to us. Take him to the surgeons.
The captain exits, helped by attendants.
Narrator: Then the Thane of ROSS and ANGUS enter with an exciting news.
DUNCAN: Who is this?
MALCOLM: The worthy Thane of Ross.
LENNOX: Looks like he has something to tell.
ROSS: God save the king!
DUNCAN: Where are you from, worthy thane?
ROSS: Great king, I come from Fife. I’m here to tell you that the Thane of Cawdor
has betrayed you! But Macbeth was amazing, and we won the battle.
DUNCAN: Great happiness! The thane of Cawdor will never again betray me. He will
be killed! Tell Macbeth that Cawdor’s titles will be given to him.
ROSS: I’ll do it.
(They all exit.)
SCENE 3
(Thunder)
Narrator: When BANQUO and MACBETH came back from battle, all of a sudden, a storm
is raging! They bumped into the three witches. (Drum sounds)
WITCH 3: The drum! Macbeth has come.
WITCH 1: (dancing together in a circle) The charm is ready now!
MACBETH and BANQUO enter.
MACBETH: (to Banquo) I feel that today is odd.
BANQUO: I’m tired. How far away is Forres? (he sees the Witches) Hey, who are
they? They look so weird. (to the Witches) Are you alive? Can you understand me?
MACBETH: Speak, if you can. What are you?
WITCH 1: All hail, Macbeth! Hail to you, thane of Glamis!
WITCH 2: All hail, Macbeth! Hail to you, thane of Cawdor!
WITCH 3: All hail, Macbeth, the future king!
BANQUO: My dear Macbeth, they’re saying such nice things! (to the Witches) Tell
me honestly, are you real? Can you see my future and tell me, too?
WITCH 1: Hail! You are lesser than Macbeth but also greater.
WITCH 2: Hail! You are not as happy as Macbeth, yet much happier.
WITCH 3: Hail! Your descendants will be kings, even though you will not be one. So,
all hail, Macbeth and Banquo!
WITCH 1: Banquo and Macbeth, all hail!
MACBETH: Wait! Stay! Tell me more. Where you learned these things, and why you
stop us here? Speak, I command you.
Narrator: The witches vanish into thin air. BANQUO and MACBETH are confused
and are curious to know more.
BANQUO: Where did they disappear to?
MACBETH: Into thin air. I wish they had stayed!
BANQUO: Were they really here? Or are we both on drugs?
MACBETH: Your children will be kings.
BANQUO: You will be the king.
MACBETH: And thane of Cawdor too. Isn’t that what they said?
BANQUO: That’s exactly what they said. Oh, look who came.
Narrator: ROSS and ANGUS enter and congratulate Macbeth’s victory.
ROSS: The king was happy to hear of your success, Macbeth.
ANGUS: The king sent us to give you his thanks and to bring you to him.
ROSS: And he told me to call you the thane of Cawdor. So, hail, thane of Cawdor!
That title belongs to you now.
ANGUS: The man who was the thane of Cawdor is still alive, but he deserves to die.
He has betrayed the kingdom, he’s finished!
MACBETH: (to himself) It’s just like they said—now I’m the thane of Glamis and the
thane of Cawdor. (to Ross and Angus) Thank you for the news. (speaking so that
only BANQUO can hear) Aren’t you now beginning to hope your children will be
kings?
BANQUO: But this whole thing is weird. The evils often tell us only some parts of the
truth in order to lead us to our destruction. (to ROSS and ANGUS) Gentlemen, I
wish to talk to you, please.
Narrator: ROSS, ANGUS and BANQUO move to one side.
MACBETH: (to himself) So far, the witches have told me two things that came true,
so it seems I will become the king. This temptation doesn’t seem like it can be a bad
thing, but it can’t be good either.
BANQUO: Look at Macbeth—he’s in a daze.
MACBETH: (to himself) If fate wants me to be king, maybe I will be. One way or
another, what’s going to happen is going to happen.
BANQUO: Macbeth, we’re ready when you are.
MACBETH: Sorry, I was distracted. Kind gentlemen, I won’t forget your help for this
day. Let’s go to the king. (speaking so that only BANQUO can hear) Think about
what happened today, and when we are both free, let’s talk.
BANQUO: Sure. Let’s go now.
(They all exit.)

SCENE 4
(Trumpet sounds)
Narrator: MACBETH, BANQUO, ROSS and ANGUS enter to meet KING DUNCAN
who honoured them title.
DUNCAN: (to MACBETH) You are now Thane of Cawdor. (to BANQUO) Noble
Banquo, you deserve no less than Macbeth, and everyone should know it. I will give
you the benefit of my love and good will.
BANQUO: Then I owe all my success to you.
DUNCAN: I’m so filled with joy. My sons, relatives, lords, I want you to witness that I
will give my kingdom to my eldest son, Malcolm. Today I name him the prince of
Cumberland. (to MACBETH) And now, let’s go to your castle at Inverness.
MACBETH: Yes, my king. I will go ahead and bring my wife the good news that you
are coming. With that, I’ll be off.
DUNCAN: My worthy Cawdor!
MACBETH: (to himself) Malcolm is now the prince of Cumberland! To become king
myself, I’m either going to have to step over him or give up, because he’s in my way.
Oh, what terrible desires I have!
(Trumpet fanfare. MACBETH exits.)

SCENE 5
Narrator: In the castle at Inverness, LADY MACBETH is reading a letter from MACBETH,
her husband.
LADY MACBETH: “The witches met me on the day of my victory in battle and told
me some prophecies; I become the Thane of Cawdor, which I am now, and a future
king as well! I thought I should tell you this news, my dearest partner, so that you
could be happy with the promises. Keep it a secret, and farewell.”
(she looks up from the letter) You are the Thane of Glamis and Cawdor, and you’re
going to be king, just like you were promised. But I’m worried whether you have what
it takes to take the crown. Hurry home so I can persuade you to go after the crown.
Narrator: A servant enters and brings the lady a news.
SERVANT: My Lady!
LADY MACBETH: What is it?
SERVANT: The king is coming here tonight.
LADY MACBETH: What? But Macbeth hasn’t told me anything!
SERVANT: I’m sorry, but it’s the truth. Macbeth is coming. He sent a messenger
ahead of him.
LADY MACBETH: I see. Take good care of him. He brings great news.
MACBETH enters.
MACBETH: My dearest love, Duncan is coming here tonight!
LADY MACBETH: And when is he leaving?
MACBETH: Tomorrow.
LADY MACBETH: That day will never come. The king is coming, and we’re going to
kill him. Let me handle the preparations, because tonight will change the rest of our
lives.
MACBETH: We will speak about this further.
LADY MACBETH: Do not look so troubled, you will look suspicious. Leave the rest to
me.
(They exit.)

SCENE 6
Narrator: That night, they had dinner with KING DUNCAN. After a while, MACBETH
excused himself from the table. Enter MACBETH, looking anxious of what he’s about to do.
MACBETH: (pacing back and forth) I am not sure I can do this. I am supposed to be
protecting him, not kill him!
LADY MACBETH enters.
LADY MACBETH: My dear husband!
MACBETH: What is the King doing now?
LADY MACBETH: He has almost finished dinner. Why did you leave the dining
room?
MACBETH: Is he looking for me?
LADY MACBETH: Why are you asking me that?
MACBETH: We can’t go on with this plan. The king has just honored me, and I have
a title now. I want to enjoy these honors while it last.
LADY MACBETH: Are you afraid of chasing your hopes? Will you take the crown you
want so badly like a man, or will you live as a coward, always saying “I can’t” after
saying “I want to”?
MACBETH: Please, stop! I can’t do it!
LADY MACBETH: Trust me, now is the right time and perfect place. They’re almost
too good for you.
MACBETH: But what if we fail?
LADY MACBETH: We, fail? If you’re brave, we won’t fail. When Duncan is asleep, I
will get his two servants drunk that they will not remember anything. We can put all
the blame on the drunken servants.
MACBETH: Will people believe that?
LADY MACBETH: Why won’t they? We will grieve and cry when we hear that
Duncan has died.
MACBETH: Fine, I’ve decided to do this. Go now, and pretend to be a friendly
hostess. Keep your fake smile on.

ACT 2
SCENE 1
Narrator: LADY MACBETH waits for news from MACBETH in the castle.
LADY MACBETH: Macbeth must be killing the king right now. The doors to Duncan’s
chamber are open, and the servants are stupid enough to be drunk. I put the daggers
where Macbeth would find them. If only Duncan hadn’t reminded me of my father when I
saw him sleeping, I would have killed him myself.
Narrator: MACBETH returns with blood all over his hands and a dagger.
LADY MACBETH: My husband!
MAVBETH: I have killed Duncan. (looking at his bloody hands) This is a very sorry sight.
LADY MACBETH: That’s a stupid thing to say.
MACBETH: I thought I heard a voice cry, “Sleep no more! Macbeth is a murder!”
LADY MACBETH: What are you talking about? Stop being delusional. Go wash the blood.
And put the daggers back! Why did you bring them here?
MACBETH: I can’t go back. I’m afraid to think about what I’ve done. I can’t stand to look at
it.
Coward! Give me the daggers. I’ll paint the servants' faces with his blood. We must make
it looked like they’re guilty.
(LADY MACBETH exits.
A sound of knocking from offstage.)
MACBETH: Oh my! That startled me! (looking at his hands) Whose hands are these?
Even with the all the water in the ocean can’t wash this blood from my hand.
(LADY MACBETH enters.)
LADY MACBETH: Look, my hands are as red as yours, but I am not as weak as you.
(A sound of knocking from offstage.)
LADY MACBETH: I hear someone knocking. Let’s go back to our bedroom. It’s so simple!
Just wash your hands and forget.
MACBETH: Yes, I’d prefer to be completely unconscious right now.

(They exit.)

SCENE 2
Narrator: In the morning, MACDUFF and LENNOX came to the castle.
MACDUFF: I’m here to wake up the king.
MACBETH: I’ll bring you to him.
MACDUFF: I will go on my own.
LENNOX: (to MACBETH) Did you know, the night has been chaotic. People are saying
they heard cries and screams.
MACDUFF: (Running to both of them in shock) Oh! Horror! This is unbelievable! The king
is murdered! (to the audience) Oh! Horror! The king is dead! The king is dead!

Narrator: MALCOLM and DONALBAIN heard about the horrible news and arrived at the
scene.
MALCOLM: What had happened?
MACBETH: Your father was murdered! I killed the servants who was supposed to be
protecting the King. I could not control my anger because they killed my beloved king.
DONALBAIN: Oh no! Father is dead! We are in danger!
MACDUFF: We should have a meeting.
MACBETH: We need to discuss about this matter as soon as possible.
ALL: We will all go!

Narrator: MALCOLM and DONALBAIN were worried and they plan to escape from danger
as their father is no longer there to protect them.
MALCOLM: What are we going to do? We should not stay here. I’m going to England. It is
safer there.
DONALBAIN: Yes, and I will go to Ireland. We should not stay at the same place.
(They exit.)

ACT 3
Scene 1
Narrator: After the discussion, MACBETH and LADY MACBETH were crowned as the new
King and Queen. Everyone kneels as they sit in the thrones.
(Banquo steps forward to address the audience.)
BANQUO: Thane of Cawdor. And now crowned as King. It has all come true. But did
the witches made it happen or was it the doing of Macbeth himself?
MACBETH: (Calling) Banquo!
(BANQUO goes to MACBETH, kneels and kisses his ring.)
BANQUO: Your Highness. My lady. Welcome back to Dunsinane.
LADY MACBETH: Our loyal friend!
MACBETH: Any news, Banquo?
BANQUO: Malcolm and Donalbain have fled the country. But they’re telling everyone
that they didn’t kill their father.
LADY MACBETH: Well they would say that, wouldn’t they?
MACBETH: It’s not important. We'll deal with it tomorrow. In the meantime...
LADY MACBETH: ...our feast...
MACBETH: ...tonight - to celebrate! You’ll join us, I know.
BANQUO: I am at your command, sir.
MACBETH: Are you ... hunting today?
BANQUO: Yes, Your Highness.
MACBETH: Will you be ... long?
BANQUO: All afternoon, Your Highness.
MACBETH: Is Fleance going with you?
BANQUO: Of course, my Lord.
MACBETH: Good, good. Enjoy yourselves and don’t be late!
(BANQUO exits.)
MACBETH: (turns to his court) Now, please, I have work to do.
(Exit all except MACBETH and his servant.)
MACBETH: (turns to them) Those men we spoke of. Are they here?
SERVANT: Yes, my Lord. I let them through the back gates as you asked.
MACBETH: Let them in. (The servants leave and Macbeth pace). I am the King. But
the witches told Banquo that his children would be kings. Not mine. I can’t be safe
while Banquo is alive.
(Enter the ASSASSINS. MACBETH greets them up.)
MACBETH: Good. Now, Banquo. I want you to kill him. Today. While he’s out
hunting. All right?
(The Assassins ponder, then agree.)
ASSASSINS: All right.
MACBETH: His son, Fleance, must die too. And nobody must ever know about this!
ASSASSIN 1: Don’t worry, Your Majesty. We will keep quiet.
ASSASSIN 2: As quiet as the grave.
MACBETH: Good, let’s make the arrangements.
(They exit.)
SCENE 2
ASSASSIN 1 and ASSASSIN 2 enter, sneaking like a robber into the bushes.
Narrator: When the night starts to fall, behind the shadow of the trees, two assassins are
waiting as if they are lions waiting to catch their prey.
(Horse noises.)
ASSASSIN 2: Hush! I heard the sound of horses.
ASSASSIN 1: Here they are!
(BANQUO and FLEANCE enter.)
BANQUO: It is already this dark. Give me a light.
(FLEANCE gave his father a torch.

The ASSASSINS then jumped out from the shadow.)

ASSASSIN 1: Well, well. Look who we got here.
BANQUO: Who are you?! What are you trying to do?!
(ASSASSINS start to attack them, ASSASSIN 1 stabs BANQUO)
BANQUO: Run, Fleance, run! Save your life at all cost!
FLEANCE: (cries) Father… father…
BANQUO: (holds the ASSASSINS) Just leave me here, run, Fleance! Please, my
son, run… (shedding tears)
ASSASSIN 1: Hey! Let me go! (pushes BANQUO and kills him)
(FLEANCE escapes. BANQUO dies.)
Narrator: FLEANCE manages to escape from being murdered. The two murderers
feel scared because they have failed their mission. They went to the castle to tell
MACBETH about what happened.

SCENE 3
Narrator: While the murder happened outside, a banquet has been prepared inside the
castle. Various noblemen and ladies sat and chatted while waiting for the arrival of the King
and Queen.)
SERVANT: All rise for the King and Queen!
(Enter MACBETH and LADY MACBETH. The guests all stand and clap rhythmically.)
ALL: Macbeth! Macbeth! Macbeth!
(MACBETH leads LADY MACBETH to a seat, then motions the clapping to stop.)
MACBETH: My lords and ladies, welcome! Tonight, we will forget the sad past and
think only of the future. So, eat, drink and enjoy!
Narrator: As the lords and ladies take their seats at the table, a servant comes to
MACBETH and whispers in his ear.
SERVANT: My lord... The two... gentlemen ... they have returned.
MACBETH: What!
SERVANT: They wish to speak with you. Over there, by the door.
MACBETH: (to the servant) Ah, yes. (to all) I have some urgent business I must deal
with. I will return in a bit.
(MACBETH walks over to the far side of the hall where the ASSASSINS wait in the
shadows.)
MACBETH: Idiots! There’s blood on your face.
The ASSASSINS take out hankies and wipe their faces.
ASSASSIN 1: It’s not mine.
SSASSIN 2: Or mine.
ASSASSIN 1: It’s Banquo’s.
MACBETH: Good. Is he dead?
ASSASSIN 2: Yes.
MACBETH: Excellent! What about the boy, Fleance?
ASSASSIN 1: Ah.
ASSASSIN 2: Well.
ASSASSIN 2: Unfortunate, uh…
ASSASSIN 1: ...the boy escaped.
MACBETH: What? You let him go? Fools! Idiots! Never mind, at least Banquo’s
dead. We can think of the boy tomorrow. Now get out of here!
ASSASSINS: Yes, your Majesty.
(The ASSASSINS leave. MACBETH returns to the table.)
LADY MACBETH: My royal lord! Come, join us. We need our host!
MACBETH: Of course, my lady (pauses) But the table’s full...
LENNOX: Here’s a place, sir.
(LENNOX gestures to the seat next to him, now occupied by BANQUO. BANQUO
turns, his face smeared with blood. MACBETH staggers back.)
MACBETH: Which one of you has done this?!
LORDS: My lord, what’s the matter?
BANQUO steps forward.
MACBETH: Get away from me! I didn’t do it! It wasn’t me!
ROSS: Gentlemen, rise - the King is not well.
(LADY MACBETH rises and goes to MACBETH’s side.)
LADY MACBETH: Please, everyone, stay. This is just ... an illness. The King has
suffered from it since he was a boy. Don’t worry, it will go away. (whispering to
Macbeth) What’s wrong with you? Are you a man or what?
MACBETH: Can’t you see it? The devil himself would be scared.
LADY MACBETH: (sarcastic) Oh, yes! Like the voices you heard. Look, it’s just a
stool! You’re seeing things.
(The GHOST disappears.)
MACBETH: What? It’s gone!
LADY MACBETH: It was never there!
MACBETH: No? Right. (to all) Please, everybody, forgive me. I am not myself this
evening. We shall have a toast!
(ALL rise, obscuring the table.)
ALL: A toast! A toast!
MACBETH: To absent friends.
ALL: To Banquo!
(They drain their glasses and return to their seats (revealing Banquo again). He turns
to MACBETH and raises his glass.)
MACBETH: Argh! It’s here again! Get back to your grave, you evil spirit!
(MACBETH draws his sword and swats the air. The other lords rise again, some try
and comfort him as he backs away. BANQUO uses the cover again to disappear.
MACBETH leans against the wall, shaking and staring)
LADY MACBETH: My lords, ladies. I’m sorry, the King is not well. Please, leave us
now. Good night.
(The guests exit, confused and concerned.)
ALL: Goodnight.
(MACBETH sits, weary. LADY MACBETH joins him.)
LADY MACBETH: You need sleep, my Lord.
MACBETH: Macduff wasn’t here tonight. Did you notice?
LADY MACBETH: Macduff? What are you talking about?
MACBETH: He’s plotting something, I’m sure. Tomorrow, I’ll go see the witches
again, to find out more. This isn’t over.
LADY MACBETH: Yes, yes. Now come. Let’s get some sleep.
(They exit.)
ACT 4
SCENE 1
Narrator: The next morning, the three WITCHES are preparing for a magic spell. They put
some peculiar items into the pot, like eye of newt, toe of frog, wool of bat and tongue of
dog.
ALL WITCTHES: (chanting) Double, double toil and trouble, fire burn and cauldron
bubble.
(HECATE enters)
HECATE: Excellent job, witches! Do not forget to sing around the pot.
(ALL WITCHES sing and HECATE leaves)
WITCH 2: Oh, I sense someone’s coming! Open the door!
(MACBETH enters)
MACBETH: What are you doing?
ALL WITCHES: Something that doesn’t have a name.
MACBETH: Well, I don’t know how you know the things you do, but I command you
to tell me what I want to know!
WITCH 1: Speak.
WITCH 2: Demand.
WITCH 3: We’ll answer.
ALL WITCHES: Come, high or low spirits. Show yourself and what you can do.
(Thunder. APPARITION 1 appears, a head with an armoured helmet.)
MACBETH: Tell me, you unknown power—
WICTH 1: He can hear your thoughts. Just listen and do not speak.
APPARITION 1: Macbeth! Macbeth! Beware of Macduff! That’s enough! Now let me
go!
(APPARITION 1 vanishes)
MACBETH: I thought so. Thank you for the advice. But I need to know more—
WITCH 2: They will not listen to your commands. Now, here is the second, stronger
than the first.
(Thunder. APPARITION 2 appears, looking like a bloody child)
APPARITION 2: Macbeth! Macbeth! Macbeth! Be violent, bold, and firm. Laugh at
other men, because nobody born from a woman will ever harm Macbeth.
(APPARITION 2 vanishes)
MACBETH: Hm, that means I don’t have to kill Macduff, but I must be careful of him!
I’ll kill you Macduff! Then I’ll be able to sleep peacefully.
(Thunder. APPARITION 3 appears, in the form of a child with a crown on his head
and a tree in his hand.)
WITCH 3: Listen, and do not speak!
APPARITION 3: Be brave like the lion and proud. Don’t even worry about who hates
you and who conspires against you. Macbeth will never be defeated until Birnam
Wood marches to fight you at Dunsinane Hill.
(APPARITION 3 vanishes)
MACBETH: Hah! But that will never happen! Oh, but I still have to know one more
thing. Will Banquo’s son ever take over the kingdom?
ALL WITCHES: Don’t try to find out more.
MACBETH: I demand to satisfy my curiosity! Tell me, what’s in the pot there?
WITCH 1: Show.
WITCH 2: Show.
WITCH 3: Show.
ALL WITCHES: Show him and make him regret! Come like shadows and depart like
that!
(Eight kings march across the stage, the last one with a mirror in his hand, followed
by the GHOST OF BANQUO.)
MACBETH: You! You look too much like the ghost of Banquo. Go away! There are
so many kings., all of them are descendants of Banquo. That’s enough. Go away!
(The spirits of the kings and the GHOST OF BANQUO vanish.)
MACBETH: Is this true?
WITCH 1: Yes, this is true, but why do you stand there so dumbfounded?
WITCH 2: Come, sisters, let’s cheer him up.
WITCH 3: Let’s play some music and dance like crazy so the king will be entertained.
(Music plays. The WITCHES dance and then vanish.)
MACBETH: Where are they? Gone? Oh, this is a cursed day. (calls to someone
offstage) You outside, come in!
(LENNOX enters)
LENNOX: Yes, my Lord?
MACBETH: Did you see the weird sisters?
LENNOX: No, my Lord.
MACBETH: Didn’t they pass by you?
LENNOX: No, indeed, my Lord.
MACBETH: Well then, I heard a horse. Who came here?
LENNOX: Some messengers bring the word that Macduff has fled to England.
MACBETH: I have decided on what to do. I’ll take over Macduff’s castle, kill his wife,
his children, and anyone else who dares to challenge me! Where are the
messengers? Come, bring me to them.
(They exit.)

SCENE 2
Narrator: At MACDUFF’S castle, ROSS brings LADY MACDUFF the news of her husband
who had ran away.
(LADY MACDUFF, SIRRAH, and ROSS enter)
LADY MACDUFF: Why would my husband run away?
ROSS: Calm down, madam.
LADY MACDUFF: He’s going to look like a traitor!
ROSS: He must have his own reason to do so.
LADY MACDUFF: What kind of reason? How could he leave us, his family, instead
of protecting us? He is just saving himself! It is obvious that he doesn’t love us!
ROSS: My dearest relatives, please be patient. I believe that your husband is wise
enough to know what’s best in this kind of situation is. Don’t worry, things will get
better soon. I’ve to go now.
(ROSS exits)
LADY MACDUFF: (to her son) Oh sweetie, your father is dead! How are you going to
live now?
SIRRAH: I will live like how the birds live, mom.
LADY MACDUFF: What do you mean, Sirrah? Are you going to eat worm and flies?
SIRRAH: It’s not like that, mom. It means that I will just live with whatever that I got.
LADY MACDUFF: You are going to be such a pitiful bird! How can you live?
SIRRAH: It doesn’t matter. What matters is, I know that father is still alive.
LADY MACDUFF: No, he is dead. What will you do without a father?
SIRRAH: What about you? What will you do without a husband?
LADY MACDUFF: Oh, I can just marry a new husband.
SIRRAH: Is father really a traitor, mom?
LADY MACDUFF: Yes, he is.
SIRRAH: What is a traitor, actually?
LADY MACDUFF: Someone who swears and lies.
SIRRAH: So, everyone who cannot fulfil their promise must be killed? By whom?
LADY MACDUFF: By the honest man.
SIRRAH: Then the liars must be a fool because their numbers are more than enough
to kill those honest men before they get killed.
LADY MACDUFF: God bless you silly monkey! (laughing)
(Enter a MESSENGER)
MESSENGER: My lady! I’m afraid that something dangerous is coming for you!
Please hurry! Take your son and leave this place. May heaven keep you save.
(The MESSENGER exits)
LADY MACDUFF: Where should we even run to?
(The MURDERERS enter)
MURDERER 1: Where is your husband?
LADY MACDUFF: I hope you never find him.
MURDERER 1: He is a traitor.
SIRRAH: You’re a liar, ugly man!
MURDERER 1: How dare you, little traitor! (stabs him)
SIRRAH: Mom, he’ll kill me, and he’ll kill you too! Run! Run for your life!
(The SON dies. LADY MACDUFF exits, crying “Murder!” The MURDERERS exit,
following her.)

Act 5
SCENE 1
Narrator: At Dunsinane Castle, LADY MACBETH’s SERVANT is leading the DOCTOR to
LADY MACBETH. LADY MACBETH has fallen sick and started walking in her sleep with a
candle.
DOCTOR: What is she doing now?
SERVANT: Washing her hands. But there’s no water.
SERVANT: Listen!
LADY MACBETH: Why is this not coming off?! So much blood!
DOCTOR: Do you hear that?
LADY MACBETH: Will these hands never be clean?
SERVANT: Heaven knows what she really knows.
LADY MACBETH: The smell of blood is still there.
DOCTOR: This isn’t an illness I can cure.
DOCTOR: There’s nothing I can do for her. She needs a priest not a doctor.
LADY MACBETH: To bed! To bed! What’s done cannot be undone. To bed! To bed!
(They exit.)

SCENE 2
Narrator: Meanwhile, the noblemen had decided to rebel against MACBETH as he is not a
worthy king anymore. The English army which is led by MALCOLM, SIWARD and
MACDUFF is near. They want to seek for revenge. (Drum sounds)
MALCOLM: What is the name of the forest behind us?
SIWARD: Birnam Wood
MALCOLM: Let every soldier hold a branch in front of them, to cover up the number of
soldiers we have.
SOLDIERS: We will do it.
MALCOLM: Macbeth is confident, and he wants us to surround the castle.
MACDUFF: Let's go fight like hardworking soldiers!

SCENE 3
Narrator: In MACBETH’s castle, MACBETH and SEYTON are preparing for battle as well.
MACBETH: I am sure we have a good chance to win this battle.
Narrator: Suddenly, there was a sound of women crying.
MACBETH: What was that noise?
SEYTON: The women cried, my Lord.
SEYTON went to see what happened.
MACBETH: What was with the sound?
SEYTON: The Queen is dead, my Lord.
MACBETH: What horrible timing! She should have died later.
(A MESSENGER enters.)
MESSENGER: My Lord, while I was watching from up the hill, suddenly I thought the
Birnam Wood forest began to move.
MACBETH: (cries) The prophecy came true! There is no use running away or staying
here. I just wish the world would just end. For now, prepare for battle! Ring the
alarms!
SCENE 4
Narrator: At the other side of the forest, MACDUFF and his soldiers are approaching and
getting nearer. They are ready to fight MACBETH.
MALCOLM: We’re close enough now. Throw down these branches and show them
who you are! Uncle Siward, you and your son will lead the first battle. Macduff and I
will do the rest.
SIWARD: If we meet Macbeth’s army tonight, we will not surrender!
MACDUFF: Blow all the trumpets. Let’s start the war!

SCENE 5
(Trumpets and the noise of battle. MACBETH enters.)
MACBETH: I cannot run away. I must fight. Who, here, was not born from a woman?
(YOUNG SIWARD enters.)
YOUNG SIWARD: What is your name?
MACBETH: You’ll be afraid if you hear it.
YOUNG SIWARD: No, I won’t, even if you are the worst devil in hell.
MACBETH: My name’s Macbeth.
YOUNG SIWARD: I hate that name! You, disgusting warrior. I’ll prove with my sword
that I’m not scared of you.
(They fight and YOUNG SIWARD is killed.)
MACBETH: You were born from a woman. Swords don’t scare me.

SCENE 6
Narrator: After hours of war, MACDUFF and MACBETH finally meet each other.
(MACBETH enters.)
MACBETH: I will not surrender. I will fight with my sword until the end!
(MACDUFF enters.)
MACDUFF: Turn around! You, Macbeth, turn around!
MACBETH: Go away! I feel sad for killing your families.
MACDUFF: I have nothing to say to you. My sword will kill you!
(They fight.)
MACBETH: You are wasting time trying to kill me. Go fight someone else. I can not
be killed by someone who is born from a woman.
MACDUFF: I was not born naturally. I was cut out from my mother’s womb.
Narrator: MACBETH was shocked to hear MACDUFF was not born from a woman.
MACDUFF then found an opportunity and succeeded to kill the king. The war ended
and MALCOLM was crowned the new king of Scotland. They all live happily ever
after.
