Upon completion of this lesson, the learners are expected to

adaptation of these require from the learner the ability to identify:
 the geographic, linguistic, and ethnic dimensions of Philippine literary
history from pre-colonial to the contemporary EN12Lit-Ia-21
 representative texts and authors from each region (e.g. engage in oral
history research with focus on key personalities from the students’
region/province/town) EN12Lit-Ib-22

INTRODUCTION

Philippine Literature has greatly evolved from the time of colonialism to the
period of revolutions. This is evident through the traces of local, regional, and national
contributions of literary art in all parts of the nation. And, As Philippines broke through
imperialism, its literature had played a vital role in its entire growth.
In this lesson, you will accomplish tasks/activities that will build your understanding
on the concept of the evolution of Philippine Literature. And, you will also read the
literary pieces of some of the great Filipino authors and writers. There are also tasks that
would develop your listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing, and literary skills.

Literature, in its broadest sense, is any written work. Etymologically, the term
derives from Latin litaritura/litteratura “writing formed with letters,” although
some definitions include spoken or sung texts. More restrictively, it is writing that
possesses literary merit. Literature can be classified according to whether it is
fiction or non-fiction and whether it is poetry or prose. It can be further
distinguished according to major forms such as the novel, short story or drama,
and works are often categorized according to historical periods or their adherence
to certain aesthetic features or expectations (genre).

Having known the beginnings of our literature as Filipinos, it would remain abstract if we
so no concrete pieces from our very own writers. And so, refer to the written piece below,
and answer the questions that follow. Can you do it?

A Volcanic Poet
Krsitian Sendon Cordero is widely described as the “enfant terrible” of Bikol writing. The term
enfant terrible usually refers to a person who is controversial, is often by being innovative and
questioning of the establishment, both which Cordero has done.

Cordero won the following awards:


 Palanca Awards in poetry, fiction, and the essay
 NCCA for Bikol poetry (2007)
 6th Madrigal Gonzales First Book Award
 Maningning Miclat Poetry Prize (2009)
 Premio Tomas Arejola Literary Prize
