Instructions: In a film analysis, you systematically evaluate a film’s effectiveness including

what it does well and what it does poorly. It can be used to discuss a science and technology
documentary film. You must review the film carefully and may need to look up terms or
concepts you are unfamiliar with or research related reading prior to writing your analysis.
Watch the film Gattaca found on this link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzG3I7nMEks.
Then, answer the following guide questions as concisely as possible.

Guide Questions:

1. If we were able to exclude the eccentric, the different, the misfits, and the weak, what would
happen to society?

-If I were able to exclude the eccentric, the different, the misfits and the weak, the society
would not be complete. Every human being was made to serve a different purpose here in our
world. We fill in those gaps that no one could ever do. If this thing has been done up until this
time, the world would be in chaos. People will protest and people will fight for their human
rights. The issue that has been made on that movie affected a lot of people. Their dreams, wants,
needs and goals in life, as for they are treated as “abnormals” of society

2. Compare Jerome and Vincent. What were their strengths and their weaknesses? In what ways
were they the mirror image of each other?

-Jerome is someone who was not considered as normal in the society, has been discriminated
in a lot of ways. Was not qualified for the work that he has been dreaming of and also felt the
discrimination in his family. Vincent is someone who is the perfect child, someone who was not
considered as not normal in the society and no records of possible diseases that he may acquire
throughout his life. They are the mirror image of each other in ways like they are both strong in
whatever difficulties they might face, ambitious, they care a lot about their future and share a lot
of things in common.
3. Why is there such resistance to the new order imposed by this society, i.e., Vincent's girlfriend
- the test technician?

-Resistance to society's new order is enforced due to the fact that people get increasingly mad
about having a destiny dictated only by their genes, particularly when they understand the
system's disadvantages and failure. They're defiant, thus any of the characters who are tagged
"valid" in the movie supported Vincent, who they have assumed, to fulfill his dreams.

4. What do you think is wrong with the society portrayed in "Gattaca"?

-What I think is wrong with the society portrayed in "Gattaca" is the discrimination on
certain people. If there has been issues detected the day they were born, they are not considered a
“perfect” child of the society.

5. Wouldn't parents want to ensure that their child were perfect and had the attributes of physical
attractiveness, intelligence, and athletic prowess to be able to do whatever he or she wanted in
life? If so, why is the society portrayed in this film so devoid of happiness, vitality, and fun?

-I think all parents would want that for their kids. But it is most likely not something that the
kid needs to have, having a perfect genes is just something that they need to be thankful for.
They also recognize the fault zones in which the "perfect" genetic structure an infant is not
considered. The society is empty of pleasure and happiness because they are following with what
is the norms and practices of

6. Some critiques have countered the vision of this film by saying that our strengths are
inextricably combined with our weaknesses. Do you agree with this?

-Yes I do believed that our strengths are inextricably combined with our weaknesses, these
qualities that we have makes us exceptionally different from one another. Sometimes our
weaknesses are used against for us to be destroyed or be on someone’s feet. But little did we
know that these weaknesses could also make us differ and be unique because in this way we
have the chance to improve ourselves.

7. What limits should be placed on genetic engineering? Should it be allowed at all? Should it be
limited to the elimination of disease and physical imperfections? Why or why not?

-Genetic engineering is very dangerous for a person’s ability to live in the real world. Yes I do
believe that it makes a person’s longevity in this world last and not acquire disease as he or she
lives. But have they considered the lifetime consequences? Are they aware that this could fail
and lead to extinction of humanity? Making things not the way they were is dangerous not only
for the child but if this matters are still continued then people who underwent this stage are in
great danger.
8. Should we permit people to make human clones of themselves? What about someone who
cannot have a child? Should we permit people to make human clones of other people?

-I think human clones are not acts of humanity, you are definitely making a new identity out
of an existing person. This could lead to lifetime problems and extinction of natural human race.
If we would allow this, anybody could clone anyone. Everyone could fake their identity and
make a new one.

9. If you would permit human cloning, would the clones have all the rights of "natural" people?

-If I would permit human cloning of course the clones have all the rights of “natural” people,
as for they are considered humans also. Having these rights be acquired by anyone else is
something that can make any heart flutter.

10. Did this society, with its rigid requirements of genetic perfection, foster the ethical value of
respect for the differences among people?

As for what I think, no. It does not respect the differences among people, because if you truly
respect the differences on each human being, you will learn to accept and be open to these kind
of things. Accepting someone’s identity should have no “what ifs and “buts”, accepting them for
what they are should have no other conditions, reasons and boundaries.
