Bontoc is the capital town of Mountain Province located in the Cordillera region. It has a population of around 24,000 people and the major dialect spoken is Finontok. The name Bontoc means 'mountain' in the local dialect.

The name 'Bontoc' is derived from the terms 'bun' meaning 'heap' in English and 'tuk' meaning 'top'. Combined, the words mean 'mountain'.

● Population as of May 1, 2010 census: 23,980
● The major dialect is Finontok. Most of the people particularly,
the elders could speak in English, and also speak Ilocano and
Filipino.
● “Bontoc” is derived from the term ‘bun,’ which is the equivalent
of heap in English and ‘tuk,’ which means top. When combined, the
two words mean ‘mountain,’ or ‘bontoc,’ when translated on the
tribe’s dialect.

History:
● The history of the province is a replete of intriguing past as
many varied stories and circumstances were recounted by elders.
Throughout the past 3 centuries of Spanish rule they never
achieved to totally conquer Mountain Province because the fierce,
warlike and hostile Igorots and formidable travel obstacles
intimidated the Spaniards.
● Spanish occupation of some parts of Cordilleras ended on
September 3, 1899 when the Spanish headquarters in Bontoc was
taken by Filipino forces.
● Some brave Igorots joined their lowland brothers in the fight
against the American in 1898.
● Mountain Province became a special province of the Philippines in
1907 after the establishment of the civil government during the
American occupation in 1901.
● Bontoc-Lepanto, Amburayan, Ifugao, KAlinga, Benguet and Apayao
comprised the sub-provinces.
● Samuel Cane, the provincial supervisor, was appointed the
governor and Bontoc became the Capital town.
● 1908, the old Mountain Province was created with 7 sub-provinces
which later was merged into 5 provinces: Benguet, Ifugao, Bontoc,
Apayao, Kalinga (BIBAK).
● In 1976, the division of these 5 provinces gave birth to 4 new
provinces namely: Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga-Apayao, and Mountain
Province.

Geography:
● Bontoc is the capital town of Mountain Province with a total land
area of approximately 39,610 hectares.
● Located at the heart of the province with mean coordinates of 17o
05’ latitude and 120o 56’longitude
● The municipality is bounded on the North by the Municipality of
Tubo, Abra: on the northeast by Municipality of Sadanga, on the
east by Municipality of Barlig: on the south by Municipality of
Banaue and Hungduan, Ifugao; on the southwest by Sabangan,
Mountain Province and on the west by Sagada, and Besao Mountain
Province and is 146 kilometers away from Baguio City.

Superstitious Belief:
● If every time you go somewhere and suddenly you met a red bird,
snake, or black dog you have to go back and discontinue your
journey.
● If a ritual is done, it is bad omen if a cat meows or a dog barks
or makes other noises.
● It is bad for a couple to go to the fields 7 days before marriage
ceremonies and 3 days after.
● If a member of a married couple dies, the surviving spouse cannot
remarry, until after a year or two. They are afraid of the anito
or the spirit of the deceased that it may kill the surviving
spouse.
● It is bad for a stranger to go inside the house after a mangmang.
