    PROJECT PROPOSAL

    “GREENER PLASTIC BOTTLES”

    DESCRIPTION:

    Plastic bottles are becoming a growing segment of the municipal solid waste stream in the
    United States. The American Chemistry Council estimates that the average consumer uses 166
    plastic bottles each year and that 2.5 million plastic bottles are thrown away every hour.
    While plastic bottles offer convenience, they also create unnecessary waste in landfills. By
    recycling your plastic bottles, you can positively impact the environment in several ways.

    Landfill space is limited, and the conditions in landfills make it nearly impossible for
    anything, including plastic, to biodegrade. Recycling plastic bottles helps to conserve space
    that can be used for other waste. According to Earth911, 7.4 cubic yards of landfill space is
    saved for every ton of plastic that is recycled. Recycling can also help reduce the number of
    plastic bottles that end up as litter in roadways and sources.

    Recycling plastic bottles helps to conserve natural resources, specifically oil, which is a
    nonrenewable natural resource available only in limited supply. The Environmental Protection
    Agency estimates that recycling one ton of plastic conserves approximately 3.8 barrels of
    crude oil. In 2008, 2.12 millions of plastic were recovered for recycling, the equivalent of
    roughly 7.6 million barrels of oil

    OBJECTIVES:

     To be able to share ways on how to reduce plastic waste.


     To lessen pollution to our environment.
     To be able to educate the community on how to reuse plastic bottles and help the
    environment at the same time.

    TARGET CLIENT:

     All genders (Ages 7 (with parental guidance or guardian) to 80)

     Jed Mateo’s Residences

     5-10 minutes

    1. 5 minutes Preparation Mateo (Manager) Make sure to have all the


    needed materials for this
    activity.
    2. 1 minute Cutting Mateo (Manager) ALWAYS keep your fingers
    away from any cutting
    tools.
    3. 5 minutes Heating of Soldering Iron / Mateo (Manager) Make sure to put the soldering

    4. 2 minutes Putting Soil and Seeds Mateo (Manager) Do not forget to water after the
    soil after planting the seeds.

    METHODOLOGY:

    STEP 1: Prepare all the materials needed for this activity. The materials needed are as follows:

     1.5 liter or higher plastic bottles


     Knife / pair of scissors
     Soldering iron (optional)
     Garden Soil
     seeds

    STEP 2: Cut the bottles in half to make two separate containers.

    STEP 3: Using your soldering iron, punch holes through the bottom part of the container.

    STEP 4: (skip this step if you have a soldering iron) Using a candle and knife, heat up the tip of
    the knife and use it as a improvised soldering iron to punch holes through your containers.

    STEP 5: Put enough soil into the containers for the plants’ roots to grow properly.

    STEP 6: Plant your seeds and add more soil to cover them.

    STEP 7: As for the final step, do not forget to water it daily and place it where it has direct
    contact to the sun.

     The participants were successfully reused and recycled their plastic bottles at home.
     The participants were able to learn the basics of planting and recycling.
     The participants were able to learn how to reuse their plastic bottles at home.
