ACTIVITY TITLE:

 MODERN ART: The Impressionist

LEARNING TARGET:

 To identify the different art elements and principles in the production of art following the various
movement styles in art.
 To analyze the different principles of art that reflect the different moods, ideas, or messages
from the artwork of various movements.
 To appreciate some of the famous artworks of the Impressionist painters by actively
participating in the discussion.

CONCEPT NOTES:

MODERN ART

Modern art is characterized by the contemporary styles of visual art and the result of various
social factors that saw the advancement of science and technology. It includes all the movements,
theories, and attitudes that reject traditional, historical, or academic forms, and conventions to create
art in a more advanced way with the use of modern technology.

THE IMPRESSIONISTS

Impressionism is a French 19 th-century art movement that portrays the effects of experience
upon the consciousness of the artist and his audience. It is characterized by short brisk strokes of
bright colors to recreate the impression of light on objects. Impressionist artists include Claude Monet,
Edouard Manet, Auguste Renoir, Paul Cezanne, and Vincent Van Gogh.

CHARACTERISTICS:

a. Color and light

 Short broken strokes


 Pure unmixed colors placed side by side
 Freely brushed colors

b. Everyday subjects

 Scene of life
 Household objects
 Landscapes and seascapes

c. Painted outdoors
 Captures the ever-changing effects of light on objects

d. Open composition

 Moved away from the formal, structural approach to placing and positioning their subject.

IMPRESSIONIST PAINTERS

CLAUDE MONET (1840-1926)


Monet was one of the founders of the Impressionist movement best
known for his landscape paintings. His style of painting used the variation of
colors, light, and seasonal changes.

Famous Paintings:

Impressionism: Sunrise (1872) Red Boats at Argenteuil (1875) La Promenade (1875)

EDOUARD MANET (1832-1883)


Manet was one of the first 19th century artists to depict modern-life
subjects. He was the key figure in the transition from realism to impressionism
with a number of his works considered as marking the birth of modern art.

Famous Paintings:

The Garden of Manet (1881) Mosnier Decked with Flags Landscape with a Village Church (1870)
PIERRE-AUGUSTE RENOIR (1841-1919)
Pierre-Auguste Renoir was one of the central figures of the impressionist movement. His works
are full of sparkling colors and vibrant light.
He used a more disciplined and formal technique to paint portraits of actual people and figure
paintings.

Famous Paintings:

Luncheon of the Boating Party (1881) Dance at the Moulin de Gallete (1876)

The Umbrellas (1881-1886)

POST- IMPRESSIONIST PAINTERS

PAUL CĖZANNE (1839-1906)


He was a French post-impressionist painter whose works created the
bridge between impressionism and cubism.

Famous Paintings:

La maison du pendu (1873) Still Life with Compotier (1878) A Painter at work (1875)
VINCENT VAN GOGH (1853-1890)
He was a post-impressionist painter whose works were remarkable for their strong, heavy
brush strokes, intense emotions, and colors that pulsate with energy.

Famous Paintings:

Starry Night (1889) Paysage sous un ciel mouvemente Sous-bois

Art Activity:
Create a simple Mosaic or Pointillism

Materials needed:

Colored paper/art paper, glue, Oslo paper

What to do:

Mosaics or Pointillism

1. Prepare plenty of little squares of circles of colored paper, like those leftovers by a hole punch.
You can also tear tiny pieces of art paper.

2. Glue them down on a clean sheet of Oslo paper to create your mosaic or dot pictures.
